I haven't watched it but I've heard it was really good, even though it gave a quite negative depiction of the generals... I think they did care about the soldiers' lives, unlike what I've heard the movie sort of says, and just felt like they had no choice but to sacrifice huge amounts of them to save their motherland.

pro tip: if you tell a unit thats in melee to stop what theyre doing, then put on fire at will, the guys that aren't fighting someone will use their guns. it gives you a huge advantage in close combat

appolo i went to the Somme and Verdun thats the front at verdun a record got scored in only 10 hours more than 2 million shells got fired at the french killing mire than 90% of the french this happend in 1916 4 hundred thousend death souls still burried there till this day if you want more stories appolo ask me this year i go to chamapne to see the battle fields all the craters of the shells are still there realy weird feeling

There's a similar movie to 'Paths of Glory' which is what I think you were referring to that was made in Australia with a similar storyline. It was called 'Breaker Morant' and was about a unit of Australian Cavalry that served in the Boer War and was tried by British courts for alleged war crimes/scapegoating. It's actually a fantastic film, one of my favorite war movies period. You should check it out if you liked Paths of Glory. It showed a completely different side of war as well, in how good soldiers can be compelled or motivated to engage in morally questionable behavior during counter-insurgency operations.

Phosgene gas was the worst because you didn't know that you breathed it in until you died like 2 weeks later. Also the reason why people prefer to fight in ww2 is because soldiers in ww1 thought it would end at Christmas 1914 and didn't exactly know the devastating new technology being developed, such as machine guns and later, in 1916, the tank. In other words, the trenches and introduction to new technology is the reason people would rather fight in ww2. In ww2, you would already know about the technology.

Big guns killed the most in WWI. And yes, it was a horrific war with no clear purpose. I don't play WW1 war games for that reason, when you learn about it in school, and if you ever get the chance to visit the battlefields, and when you stand at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, you can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of loss. I can't get past that to play games about it, it just feels insensitive.

France and Germany have always been equally matched. The only reason the French didn’t fight much in ww2 was Cause of ww1. Seeing that much death ain’t natural. I respect all veterans. I would of loved to speak to a northern soldier and a southern soldier from the Civil War just to hear each of their perspectives.

Unusual to see Finnish jaegers and Schutztuppe fighting aganst the French in Europe. But cool to see these two rather forgotten types of soldiers used in a game. In Finland it isn't forgotten that Finnish jaegers were trained in Germany and I suspect people in eastern Africa haven't forgotten the service of Schutztruppe and King's African Rifles but really under appreciated units all of them. They played a small role regarding the big picture but were tough as nails.

I think these mods would be better served trying to look like the World War I 1914 battlefield! At that time the armies manoeuvred in a napoleonic style on a greener terrain like this until trench deadlock ensued! Battle of the Marne mod?

Chlorine gas was the gas that deteriorated your lungs, mustered gas gave you blistering and could kill you if exposed to it for a long period of time but was meant to wound soldiers instead of killing them. mustered gas was also smell less and colorless which did make it exceptionally dangerous.

Mustard gas was bad, yes...but it wasn't the worst, that title goes to phosgene gas. Around 85% of the casualities from chemical warfare was caused by it.

was it mustard gas or chlorine gas? cos I remember that chlorine gas was the one that killed people by harming their respiratory system and mustard gas was causing blisters on skin contact, usually causing blindness by causing blisters to form on the eyes of allied soldiers

I've played a couple TGW custom maps with 0 crashes and this is what works for me: - Open the mod launcher. - Click on Mod Settings - On unit scale select "Classic" Now your units are 300 men strong and it doesn't crash. There's a bad side tho: you don't see the enemy units until they are in range of your soldiers (maybe it's because of my crappy pc) which is unfortunate.

Another great movie is All Quiet on the Western Front. It focuses on a German trench unit through the war from 1914-1918. There are two: a 1930 film and a 1979 film. I can't remember which of the two I watched but it's incredible.

Pixie if you have to take an enemy position like that: try to use conscripts as meat shields and follow up with stormtroopers and normal rifle infrantry! this is the most effective way, as far as i have experienced it! consripts aren't that bad in this mod as well! and moreover: in this mod, forget about those tanks... they do nothing! better get cav or more rifles! however the machine gun is pretty good, if you use it properly! Love those battles!

Here's a fun-ish fact for you Apollo, that French 'horizon' blue of the 1915 and later French soldiers was intended to camouflage the troops in early day attacks, though still being bright blue in the middle of a muddy brown battlefield isn't any more good than blue and bright red of the early part of the war

On the subject of good WW1 movies, "The Lost Battalion" is a great one about an American battalion that ends up advancing way past their flanks (communication was not great back then). I definitely recommend it gents.

I love this mod and I’ve found the solution to not crashing the custom maps. Use no artillery. I swear its the solution, the map will not crash with just infantry or cavalry. It makes the games less fun, but it’s still cool to play on those custom maps without them crashing, especially Fort Vaux and Paschendale
