My great, great, great uncle was amongst the men who heard this song and answered the call. Rest in peace, brave soldiers of ages past. You served with honor, and made your country proud.

hard to believe it's been exactly 100 years since the start of this terrible war and only 4 years ago the last survivor of the trenches passed away, as a 15 year old it gives me a weird feeling it makes me feel both young and old at the same time , man i still can't believe it but when you actually realize everyone in this video is gone now it really impacts you..my great grandfather was alive during the war ( too young to enlist but he did fight in the second world war) and he told me of the lines of people rushing to go "Over There" and then coming back a couple months later with their smiles turned to frowns ( i'm an American By the way) anyways he was 8 then ( born in 1910) and from what he told me it was the same with him when he went over there in WW2 going over there happy and ready to fight and then coming back with the terrible memories of what you bared witness to..man am i glad all my family members that have served gave me the full bloody details of what they seen in their respective wars, it's sad that everyone my age wants to join the army becuase of call of duty...I hate to say it but they will learn the truth of it, sorry for rambling just wanted to share my thoughts.

Thanks for sharing ...You really hit the nail on the head. War is a horrible - rarely necessary - and totally unglamorous thing. My intent years ago when I put this up (the production quality makes me cringe now) was not to glorify war but the people who sacrificed themselves for what they believed to be a worthy cause. My interest in the Great War goes back to a time when I was younger than you. I served but was fortunate not to have experienced anything worse than the routines and trivial deprivations of army life. Not to sound like a salesman but I co-edited a book in 2012 titled "Hell's Observer" ...the transcription of a 600 page hand-written diary from a WW1 soldier who experienced the western front and wrote about it in a way that any thinking person would relate to. For me, it was never about the generals and campaigns as much as the common soldier's thoughts and observations. Those words are real and gut-wrenching when you have the capacity to relate to another person's situation ...a trait that every decent human has in them.

aefguy thanks for the reply I"ll have to look up that book sometime :) anyway i agree with you 100% anyone who was served earns my full respect and their experiences need to be immortalized for future generations to here about, anyway back to WW1 , I just can't imagine the feeling of hearing the whistle blow then having to rush over the top it gives me chills just thinking about it...

Yeah - It's a great tune with catchy lyrics. It made many a young man head over to the recruiter for what they thought would be a great adventure ...and for some it was. I would like to spend a week or so back in 1918 if I could but not in the front line trenches of France. Cheers!

I heard this song in the background of a WW1 documentary, and just had to hear the whole thing. WW1 simply boggles my mind, and I'm always astounded that millions of people literally charged into their own deaths...usually knowing they would die. Only a German would give this awesome piece of history a thumbs down.

I heard this is History yesterday. After that all you could here in the halls, lockers, bathrooms, etc... is "over there, over there..." My history teacher told us he showed this to his son when his son was in seventh grade and now he's in college, but whenever he says "over there" the he starts singing it.

Very good video. I became interested in WW1 when I was 10 years old. As I got older my interest shifted to WWll with shows like Combat! However I I heard this song on an episode of the tv show Mad Men about an older man who fought in the Great War. It's renewed my interest in WWl. And yes war is horrible. Thanks for posting.

I agree. WWI is a very important topic to really know to truely understand global impacts and consequences (WWII, which is a direct result from WWI, and the Cold War, which is a more indirect result). I find the problem with today's History courses are that 20th (and even 21st to an extent) are skimmed over because they're so recent.

He was not alone - this song was a powerful recruiting tool in 1917. As the casualty reports started coming in, it fell out of favor and became somewhat of an embarrassment from naive times but it came back out again in WW2 ...a testament to a great tune and powerful lyrics even if hubris. Here's to your Grandfather and the others that answered that call.

I hope to one day to get to see one of the trenches that are still there today. I’m actually curious if any ghost stories have arised over time since this big conflict. Like someone hearing a fuck ton of guns going off in the middle of the night or hearing shrieks of men as they get torn to pieces. If anyone has any please share. I would love to hear a good tale about how the past affects the present at the trenches.

Also, even though they had a strategic right to attack American merchant ships, it still gave America a reason to enter the war, so I really doesn't matter if they had a strategic right or not. They attacked, America defended.

If there is such a thing as an "Ally" as France was to the US, I hope that they would come to our aid if a foreign invader occupied a third of our country. The Germans would have never left if they had not been forced militarily and the US came when they were most needed.

I think that the attacks by drones in Pakistan are usually on the militants themselves, theyre more directly involved than ships from a neutral country carrying military material. It may be a fair argument that Germany had a strategic right to attack those merchant ships, ie unrestricted submarine warfare , but I dont think that it resembles the situation in countries like Pakistan. Lets face it now, sections of Pakistans population are just as hostile to US as Talliban, in fact, CONT

War is a terrible ugly thing if that is what you mean. But the reasons that drew the US into WW1 were compelling and real. What if today a nation/group sunk our merchant/commercial ships and that same group invaded and occupied 1/4 of a country without provocation ...a country who shared our history and values? ...I hope we would come to their aid and that we would have the conviction to boldly defend ourselves like we did in 1917-18. And if the post-war victory terms had been handled differently, Nazi-ism would not have had a reason to happen.
