I normally just use a simple zener + load resistor, but this is a nice elegant solution. Thanks for sharing mate!

i love that you used the Aqua Teen Hunger Force as a reference.

Maybe he'll get permission from them to use the name "Frylock" or "Meatwad" on a distortion pedal :D.

yep, I fired near ten 7660s from my hand or customer, mostly in the voltage inverter.. but never go wrong with LT1054 or lm555, 9v zener input is good idea, thanks mate.

will this circuit also provide protection in case of a reverse polarity "accident"?

It should with that first Schottky there

Does this resettable fuse then take the place of the power supply series resistor ? As i see there is none included in the circuit shown?
@DarronThornbury3 жыл бұрын
How about just using a 1W 12V zener diode to ground instead of the SCR? One hefty 1000mA part to take the heat and trip the 100mA fuse? I'm guessing that will be less effective for some reason? Nice vid :)

hi, good solutions for the 7660 but for me now i use only TL1054 which allows you 100mA instead of the poor 20mA you've got with 7660, and it go up to 15v.
@erikvincent58463 жыл бұрын
The concept should work there too!

Pedal guys regularity run pedals on 12-18v to get more out them. I’ve seen it firsthand. Having to repair them…

I've heard that a lot of players are moving more to fixed supplies and getting away from battery usage. If this is true, why not just use a regulated 9V supply and be done with the situation? Am I missing something here? (Shrug.)
@erikvincent58463 жыл бұрын
The issue is if someone puts a regulated 18V supply in a 9V pedal in efforts to get more headroom. I get that question enough that I figured I make a video on it.
@davehebert34033 жыл бұрын
@@erikvincent5846 I hear you, Erik. There are enough non-techie folks out there to make this an issue, of course. I guess they figure that if 9V is good, double the voltage must be better. I guess we could tell them that we could fix the pedal, but the problem of that is repair cost would probably be just as expensive as purchasing a brand new pedal. Hopefully, they'll learn from the experience and not try something like that again.
@erikvincent58463 жыл бұрын
@@davehebert3403 agreed. I have a friend who has a boutique pedal company and he had an overdrive that falls prone to this issue from time to time, due to user error, not the pedal. This way, he doesn't have to worry about it anymore.

@@davehebert3403 For some pedals doubling from 9 to 18V is better! Many Catalibread pedals operate in the 9-18V range as do the Cali76 compression pedals and the Fulltone OCD. But not the Klon!!! 😅 (always read the manual!)

In the old days, over-voltage damage would happen because someone used a non-regulated 9V supply with a single pedal that draws so little current, that the supply was actually up around 14-15V. Back in the 80s and 90s, regulated supplies were not that common and they were expensive. So a lot of musicians would just go and buy a cheap Kmart wall wart to save batteries... These days over-voltage damage is surprisingly common, and I think it's because so many pedal board power bricks have dedicated 18v, 12v and also adjustable outlets. And it's easy to accidentally use the wrong plug, especially if you are trouble shooting a board at a gig, in low light, with the drummer already counting in the first tune... :)
