I always took Azula's shock at becoming fire Lord was because the fire nation still followed primogeniture. 80 years later there was a woman fire Lord, but that was after reformations. In the hall of fire lords, we don't see a woman one. I don't know, they didn't show a scene where it shows Ozai telling Azula that she will inherit the throne, although it would make sense. Ozai clearly liked and trained Azula to be better than Zuko, so why would he put in that effort into her for the throne to pass to his less deserving child.

Toph sandbending a perfect life-sized replication of ba sign se is the most impressive feat of bending in the entire show. The precision that would require is uncanny. Jesus.
@Xeroxias2 жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly I don't like this. She made that in an instant. How can one swift arm movement manipulate that many particles at once? Is Toph even capable of holding a mental image with that level of detail in her mind all at once? I think the scene is a weird choice.
@cameronwebster5732 жыл бұрын
@@Xeroxias, respect to you. But I'm afraid I have to disagree with that take. Like about all of that. It’s all written into her character; you just have to look harder. The authors of this show didn’t miss a thing. Other than that moon stuff and all the other things the guy above us points out in this KZbin series. LOL Bending is about spirituality and mental fortitude, not the science of particle distribution of material. And they write an almost inhuman perception ability into her character. That’s how she overcame her blindness. Here’s just one example… think about the conversation she had with Aang in her parent's yard in the episode “the blind bandit.” She explains that she’s never had trouble seeing because of seismic sense. And in that scene, the authors exemplify that she can perceive better than aang by making her point out ants that make aang look around, unable to figure out what she’s talking about. She also says she never forgets the feeling of someone's footprints. That’s why she calls aang twinkle toes. I’m not saying that wasn’t a truly fantastic feat of bending. I unironically think it’s the most impressive feat of bending in the entire show, no cap. And I also believe Toph is the character who would pull it off. I guess if your point of aversion to the scene is just that Toph is overpowered, that’s fair. Like, I can understand a distaste for overpowered characters in stories generally. I love Toph’s character, but I can understand why people may prefer key plot members in any tale not to be overpowered. But if your point is that toph shouldn’t be able to manage overpowered feats of bending like that, I think that is just simply not true. Toph’s character is written to be overpowered; that was a conscious decision made by the writers.
@Xeroxias2 жыл бұрын
@@cameronwebster573 I'm all for a good dialogue, so sure, let's get into this! You make great points about Toph's inhuman perception and the non-technicality of bending, and I can't argue with either of those, but I don't think those ideas alone support what she did in that moment. Yes, bending shouldn't be analyzed in the context of the feasibility of generating forces on matter, I completely agree. However, the way the earth moves is undeniably subject to nothing but Toph's will. She's choosing where the sand goes, not allowing the essence of Ba Sing Se to possess her and guide the brush she's painting with. That means she's deliberately producing thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of almost independent, highly precise tugs. We've never seen any bender pull something like this off before or since. They usually just grab a huge mass of stuff and move it in one direction, or split it into no more than a dozen independent streams at once if they're incredibly talented. That kind of bulk motion is wildly different than what Toph just demonstrated. You may argue that there should be no limit on the control Toph has over her element, insisting that bending is a conduit directly from mind to matter that perfectly imparts the bender's will to the element; even so, there's no avoiding the impossible level of detail in her model. Because it was created in an instant, she had to have been holding every last one of those details in her head at the same time. Humans just don't work like that! All artists start with sweeping, broad strokes, and return later for ever finer detail, because they just can't hold everything in their short-term memory at the same time. Even though Toph had the unique ability to perceive all of Ba Sing Se at once due to her incredible senses, that doesn't mean she can actively be aware of every last detail at once. You can stare at a painting long enough that you've committed the entire thing to memory, but when it comes to accessing that memory, you still have to meander around the canvas, recalling each detail piece by piece. My problem isn't that Toph is overpowered. I don't really care what this implies about her as a character. My issue is what this implies about bending, and benders, as a whole. It just doesn't seem to be the same thing that Katara did when she gathered the rain into ice spears, or that the firebending performer who created and manipulated a fire dragon did in the episode introducing Jeong-Jeong. It feels like it doesn't belong in this world. Finally, I recognize that in the end, this is a story. It wouldn't have been appropriate for the writers to depict a montage of Toph diligently sculpting the city over; that would have interfered with the flow of the story! Plot conveniences can be overlooked … but this didn't advance the plot at all, so I'm less willing to look the other way.
@knotationmusic2 жыл бұрын

Gunna pause so I can comment on the "meat on Aang's plate" thing. I love that they added that in. It makes his emotional blow up so much deeper. His friends DON'T understand. They still absentmindedly give him meat on his plates. They talk about killing like they've done it themselves, because their cultures taught them to destroy enemies, not makes friends/peace like the monks. In that moment, when Katara says "We do understand" She absolutely does not, because she was raised in a culture that glorified the death of the opposed; in her mind Aang is a hero BECAUSE he is going to kill Ozai. But to Aang, to take a life, is not his place. A great Uncle Ben moment for Aang, showing responsibility with immense power.
@shadowofdimentio46182 жыл бұрын
I agree with all of that besides the meat thing. Fuck culture, if you're best friend of almost a year who you have been feeding and traveling with makes it a point that they don't eat meat, you don't give them meat this far in. Best case scenario, he doesn't eat it and goes hungry. Worst case scenario, he blows up at you and gets very angry. No good friend would do this and no one there looks good for it. It is potentially catastrophic for their characters and friendships. Not understanding someone's morals is one thing. It wouldn't come up super often and it's a big talking point Aang has clearly avoided, so it makes sense that the others would keep pushing. Aang has never pushed back against it as much as he has suggested avoiding it. But eating has to be daily at the minumum. Unless Zuko decided to cook the food, wasn't told about Aang's vegetarian diet and has at most cooked for the group one other time, this is very bad. I'm all for symbolism but this is more bad than good. Like making Anakin killing children works as symbolism in that he's crossed the final line but makes no sense for his character and assassinates it. Any value it adds it also takes away.
@arrowheadstudio2 жыл бұрын
Yep that’s something that’s not really talked about. I mean the first time we see Katara she’s trying to kill a fish. We even see how killing is celebrated in the form of using animal pelts as decorum in bato of the water tribe. Katara, sokka and zuko were all raised in societies that cling to the idea that “might is right.” They can’t fully understand Aang’s point of view because not only have that not lived it but it has also been erased from history, As fire nation propaganda has painted the air nomads as having a military. And The water tribe has little to no information of the air nomads.
@skilynnclari2 жыл бұрын
@@shadowofdimentio4618 i imagine it was probably just a mistake, and one that has happened before. they probably don't worry too much about it, because aang can just not eat that part of the meal, which then reinforces that they don't understand. to aang, being a vegetarian is a deeply held conviction and is important to him. they probably just see it as a little quirk of his, especially considering that it's the air nomads who practiced vegetarianism before this. they may have never even heard of it before they met aang.

That said, Toph does seem way too chill about him running away, when the last time he did that he was gone for 100 years

I think Azula's surprise was more because the position was out of nowhere. It was what she always wanted but she thought she would replace Oozai after his death... not when he promotes himself to a bigger throne. This might help explain Azula's breakdown a bit as well. She didn't inherit the throne, she was given a hand-me-down. Imagine getting the position you always wanted literally just because it was made obsolete.
@midorimatsuda72412 жыл бұрын
Finally someone said it! Also consider all that has happened to her in a remarkably short time: she was cornered an attacked by her brother, uncle and team Avatar, after years of effectively being the only child she was usurped when Zuko was allowed to return, her father found out that she lied about killing the avatar (I can't imagine that went over well,) her brother abandoned her to join the homeless enemy leaving her alone again with her abusive father, her friends turned their backs and physically attacked her leaving her powerless (her greatest fear), Zuko proved that he can in fact redirect lightning leaving her to doubt her superiority, and there were two prison breakouts. I really wish we got more time with Azula to see her struggles because I really believe her breakdown was warranted. Even just a cut-screen of Ozai screaming her name after Zuko left at the end of the Day of Black Sun or her realizing he was gone and looking worried or a bit sad would have gone a really long way. A flashback of her seeing her mother's empty chambers and then Zuko's would have been particularly poignant. She left to protect him and then he left too so maybe in her mind she didn't really need to leave, after all her brother was gone either way.

Actually, Toph's sandbending practice might help her see better on sand. She laughs at the Suki sculpture. Maybe it is just at Aang's question in light of the answer (which amounts to a joke), but it really seems to me that she can see it for what it is, rather than simply rely on Aang's misidentification. Also, she generally seems to be aware of the others while on the sand in this episode.
@johnwalker10582 жыл бұрын
I suppose. Perhaps she figured out some sort of technique for how to "see" better on sand. She did invent metalbending after all, and that was previously thought to be impossible, so I guess the invention of new use for sandbending is within reach as well.

For why Ozai decides to leave Azula behind: She lied to him. No seriously. Ozai is a man who prides his abilities of complete control. He always viewed Azula as a tool for his own advancement. The fact she was able to deceive him frightened him. Because now she has the ability to potentially betray him. Technically she already did by hiding the fact the avatar was alive, and lied about Zuko killing Aang. That was a huge betrayal. He doesn’t want her there to betray him in his moment of glory. Also putting her on the throne actually makes her easier to control. Anything she does will be reported to him one way or another. He can always come back, kill her, take back over the throne, and have new heirs.

It would have to be after Zuko joined but that raises the question why was Zuko not told about it then?
@jordancampbell85972 жыл бұрын
It might have been *before* Zuko joined. There's nearly half a day between them telling Zuko to take a hike and them being ambushed by Combustion Man--plenty of time for Aang, Sokka and Katara to talk amongst themselves. Toph and Suki being read in on the new development is noteworthy, if only because Toph has been consistently left out of the loop.
