If Roku isn't just a hallucination, then it still makes sense that he saw Roku without going to the temple. He has really grown in his spiritual capacity, and developed under Pathik as an avatar. Plus he has just explored his spiritual side too, having more adventures in the spirit world, as well as more time conversing with spirits. He never had any level of training to commune with spirits before the Roku visit at the Fire Temple.
@StarShade03 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s how I figured it worked. The Winter Solstice seemed like it “unlocked” Aang’s spiritual connections to his past lives essentially.
@shadowphoenix16963 жыл бұрын
The problem is that it does requires a bit of an assumption on how it actually works; it an easy fix's like a simple line like "now that the spiritual connection has been made I will be there when you need me" the show does have a couple of moments where it is to vague and we have to make some assumption in are heads to make it work.
@rashkavar3 жыл бұрын
@@shadowphoenix1696 Honestly, a lot of the spiritual side of things is left vague and mysterious, and I think that's 100% deliberate. It's a side of the world that most people just...avoid. "This is weird, it doesn't make sense, I should not get mixed up in it" seems to be the standard approach people of the Avatar world have to spiritualism. There are, of course, exceptions, and Aang as the Avatar is inherently one of them - a big part of his reason for existence as the Avatar is being the bridge between physical and spirit worlds. I think explaining the spiritual side of ATLA as clearly as things like the mechanics of bending and various technological contraptions would rob it of the mystery that makes it feel so different and special.

I love the reveal of Lord Osai, because up to this point he's effectively made out to be the devil, so you're expecting some grizzled, mean, evil looking guy, but just like the devil being a fallen angel - and would therefore look exactly like an angel, Lord Osai is actually a handsome, and kind-faced looking guy. He doesn't look evil at all, and that's a great lesson for kids, because some of the most evil people whom walk among us don't look like some horned dude twirling his mustache and goatee. Many people will follow a handsome/pretty person, even if they're a horrible human being. So making him look handsome and gentle was a brilliant design choice, and even his voice doesn't sound evil like so many kids' cartoons normally give the villain.

3:03 Okay, let's be completely fair here: The Earth King knew _SQUAT_ about the world without other people holding his hand for him the entire way. By depending on other people to that extent, he leaves himself very vulnerable for more people like Long Feng or Azula to exploit his ignorance. If I were him, I would *absolutely* go out and figure out the world for myself- returning to that position once I had an actual understanding of how everything works on the ground level.

The Hakoda/Ozai scene is among my favourite in the entire series. It perfectly contrasts their respective personalities and how it shaped their children. With Hakoda, you have a father who professes his unquestionable love for his daughter and expresses how much it hurt to leave her despite believing it necessary to give her a better future. With Ozai, his praise only comes from how Zuko benefits him and the Fire Nation as a whole. It's almost as though Zuko isn't anything more than a tool because that's precisely how Ozai sees everyone: a tool. It's a fantastic scene, both it development for Katara and to further show the audience why Zuko still struggles with making the right decision.

@josephschubert65612 жыл бұрын
I think what helped build that image in our minds is that Firelord Azulon _did_ look like that. He was old and decrepit, his fingers had those long pointy nails, and his hair was the right mix of old-and-wise and scary. You saw that man and you knew he was evil, but you also knew he'd _been_ evil for a long time and knew how the game worked. Only letting us see Firelord Ozai as a silhouette really heightened the expectation that he'd be like Azulon because the silhouetted face has more noticeable points. They gave him horns without actually giving him horns.
@worsethanyouthink3 жыл бұрын
Something that I feel is pretty underrated is how they never drew the Firelord like a cliche villain, sure he has very pronounced masculine features and is stances in a way he demands respect but he never is overtly while looking except when he is doing things that are truly evil, not something you see much with kids show villains

Raava was destroyed and reincarnated through Vaatu before being fused again. *the "Avatar Spirit" is the fusion of Raava and the human spirit, not either of them alone Reincarnation is like a reset button. 10:38 I'd like to think that Aang being able to contact Roku and Yue in this episode shows that he has progressed spiritually, just like everyone else seemed to be stronger bending and fighting wise. When Roku appeared on crescent island he was visible to everyone, including Zhao and his fleet who looked at him with fear. It's his temple, or at least his statue in a locked room where you could assume is the only place that someone other than the avatar could contact Roku's spirit. Same with Kyoshi in Avatar Day. At the end of book 3 Aang is capable of contacting avatars 4 generations back, and that's even before he spoke with the lion turtle. It's safe to say this isn't an inconsistency but rather a display of Aangs power curve he got spiritually from unlocking his chakras.

The Earth King taking off with REGULAR BEAR is actually pretty on-brand. Also, Zuko and Mei... fine. It's ok. Less trite and obvious than a Zuko/Katara pair. Zuko and Katara kind of end up as buds, and that works in terms of story, and it's good when writers can acknowledge that regular friendships between men and women shouldn't be exceptional.

In one of those special info pop-ups that were airing on nickelodeon, It's confirmed that Toph can still sense the presence of earth when it's not on the ground because of her being an earthbender. This is expanded on in the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels where we have examples of benders being able to feel the presence of their element when nearby. Toph knew the location of the incoming fireball because it was a rock, so she could simply use her bending as a sixth (seventh?) sense. Hitting the catapult is probably because she was aiming for the boulder that was loaded on it.

That is why in S1E3, he has to enter the sanctuary in order to meet someone (Roku) who might help him. He could not do it on his own at the time. But even by midway through S1, he has some meetings with past Avatars without any aid, both in and out of the Spirit World. Given all of his progress in S2, particularly with Guru P. and then his death, I buy into the fact that he is more-attuned to his spiritual side by this point and is starting to be able to access his past lives at will. It is not perfect yet (he masters it only at the end of his fight against Ozai, and even that is not a permanent and perfect mastery according to the comics - which aligns with expectations and IRL experience), but he is getting there.

I think Katara's bending is so powerful in this episode because it's a full moon. We see how considerably environmental aspects enhance bending throughout this show so it should be no different here.
@redgeoblaze3752 Жыл бұрын
yeah, and full moons are so very rare in this world, so it makes sense that this would be one of the few times we get to see her go all out like this.

In the extras blurbs for atla, it says that toph is capable of ‘seeing’ earth that’s in mid-air. I always thought it was because she could partially reach out with her mind to sense bendable objects.

That makes sense, if she uses her bending to see

She can see air born earth If it came from the same surface shes in contact with She hates flying on Appa and walking on ice for the same reasons Shes basically blind So a metal ship on water and another ship? The Dukes shoulder taps arnt enough to make 100% hits XD

@@donovanulrich348 - what do you want to bet that the other ship is flinging burning coal-aka, earth? Plus, she has sound to help her-those devices creak a lot while they’re being loaded, and the fire would also be crackling and roaring.

Toph sees thru the vibrations in the ground. She doesn’t see airborne earth. I theorize about this show all the time too, but y’all are straight up ridiculous sometimes lol

1:34 Not necessarily just a manly forearm shake, but a water tribe greeting as we’ve seen Sokka do with the WT fleet at the end of last season. If you notice, Aang stays respectful to other nations’ customs.

3:18 I suppose those masks where made to withstand smell since Hakoda stated that they used stink bombs to make the fire nation flee their ships

Or maybe they are airtight and have just enough to get them onto the ship from underwater?
@adeptusfantasticus3 жыл бұрын
@@Sinewmire no they'd have to be rebreathers to filter breath, since just like if a water bender bended a bubble around their nose and mouth, or whole head, and tried to swim down, both the water bender and the non water bending water tribesman with just an airtight shell would be out of air in two breaths, since every time they breathed out they'd lower the percentage of oxygen in the environment drastically, and if you inhale atmosphere with less than 8% oxygen, you achieve brain death, it's asphyxiation worse than drowning

I feel like the reason Roku and Yue can talk to Anng here is cause he mastered the avatar state so he could more easily connect with the spirits.
@RobotZim3 жыл бұрын
10:39 while initially weird, you have to remember that in the episode where anng talks to roku at the temple, he tells him near the end that his wisdom will always be available to him. I think the point of the solstices is to show the viewer how past avatars can fully utilize their knowledge of the situation. Like how before he goes to invade the firelord, roku tells aang during that solstice about his past with sozin inorder to give him more of an understanding into the fire nation and their reasonings for wanting to take over the world. However in every other situation where roku appears for advice(outside the season one episode) its after anng wants an answer to a question that he knows rather then being told about something he didn’t know before.

5:29 There's definitely no way that TOPH aimed that rock, but if you look behind her she's actually got The Duke telling her where to shoot. At 5:45 where she intercepts the Fire Nation trebuchet, you can actually see him holding onto her arm, likely to physically aim her like a catapult. There's a reason she yells "Load the Toph!" at the start of the scene.

This is how a new season is supposed to be setup. The writers did an amazing job on this episode. I always loved Season 3 of Avatar it was so right.

8:16 it’s a common thing that anger blinds people and because of this his fear and anger culminate into desperation. A desperate attempt to run away like how the guru said “aang must lose his attachment to what he loves to get powerful” but he failed and now he’s trying to regain this balance, fails, and is now desperately running away (an air bender tactic) If this was an anime book 3 would be about his gaang hunting aang as he goes through a training arc but they instead go with “a pep talk” and realizing he can’t do everything like he used to as you said (I mean another example is sonic underground where sonic and his siblings hunt his mother but they never do)

I personally think Toph can just feel/detect earth wherever it is around her, and now that she can metalbend, she figured out how to feel/detect metal around her too

Random fact, in the Lost Adventures comic book on Avatar, the masks the Water Tribe men put on (and actually the whole of Team Avatar) were so they don't have to smell the stink bombs Hakoda mentioned at the near end of season 2. They used them to help them capture the ship.
