0:17 they didn't,they changed the shape,first they made them smaller in height,some had dirt inside so in case of collapse of the wall,the cannons won't be able to reach the city. Cannons were placed on bastions. Majority of them had moats around them. Also tons of them had small raisings in front of moats,so the cannon fire wouldn't hit the main bastions and walls

I think the voice acting is the only thing that throws me off. I get that they wanted him to sound more like Roku, but his voice and cadence is vastly different from his younger self. Katara has this problem as well. That’s kind of why the third living member of the Gaang is the most successful because they actually feel like the same character.

"You have theatres in the lower ring?" Actually, that makes a lot of sense. It was comparably dirt cheap to see movies back in the day, and many people, especially the lower class, went to the theatres. Movies were not something exclusive to the rich, as you may initially think, since they are WAAAAAY cheaper to show than something like a play.

Hello! Not an engineer, I am a speleologist though. (For those unaware a speleologist, is the scientific term for an expert on caves!) I, specifically, deal with Ice caverns! I work for a company I cannot name, our job is basically to keep Antarctic explorers safe. We have research divisions and I'm part of one. Such is the reason I work with Ice Caves and Caverns. As far as I know we do not have anything as structurally sound as a whole ass jail in an ice cavern. We have worked down in crevasses like this though, and sometimes our construction guys have to makeshift support beams! See Ice crevasses like this can close up due to the pressure that builds up below when they're formed. Some very very large ones, (maybe not as large as this, but certainly larger than your first thought), have closed! we use the makeshift support beams to make sure that if it is working its way slowly towards closing, that it can't become too small of a gap by the time we need to leave. My best guess for these is that it is a more permanent measure to prevent this crevasse from closing. Seeing as they're made of steel and all.

@Whoopingcoughalig It honestly just depends on the gap. The material is sturdy enough that it can hold for up to months at a time. But we've come back to a couple of crevasses before that were seemingly closed over night. Those ones tend to be smaller in proportion. However some crevasses can span as large as 40 ft wide and 90 ft deep. I think the largest one ever recorded closing was 66ft wide and 144ft deep. That wasn't one of ours, just this one I know about lol. I've never seen one that large, though I really wish too.

No, they're not pointless. The walls don't need to physically stop people, they're just the physical representation of laws separating the classes. We've never been shown that people can't go in the higher rings, they just can't live here because they don't even have enough money to do so. The only place that is likely "off ground" for the commoners is the royal palace and that's about it. That's not the only way to divide the classes too. Pretty sure you don't tend to hang around in a place where you can't do shit because you look so estranged (therefore everyone is gonna be hostile toward you or look at you suspiciously, assuming you only have malicious intentions) and everything is way too pricey for you.

City walls didn't go away after cannons! They had to change but they kept being used, and could be quite effective even into the 19th century. The last city walls of Paris were built in the 1840s, and when the Prussians besieged Paris, they chose to starve them out instead of attacking.
@theDinosorcerer
@theDinosorcerer Күн бұрын
while true it is significant that the shape of fortifications had to change to meet the threat of gunpowder weapons. the same fortress that would have been impregnable in the early 1400s had walls that were tall, but far too thin to protect you from enemy siege cannons if they managed to get them near enough by the late 1400s. new designs of fortresses had to be experimented with, ultimately resulting in (at least in Europe) the complementary Vauban fortresses and siege parallel warfare that would characterise European warfare for about 200 years and arguably still sees applications in his offensive concept of the siege parallel. for this period, it's only been less than a century since the time airships were developed. as such, older fortifications like Ba sing se probably shouldn't reflect the change in warfare as much.

I also think the walls of Ba Sing Se serve as an important symbol to the leadership of Ba Sing Se. We know that the further you go from the center, the more impoverished the city becomes. It serves as a physical metaphor for the stringent caste system that the Earth Kingdom was built on, and would still be desperately clinging to, as we see with the unrest. We see how self-absorbed in her greatness the Earth Queen is, and there's no way she'd want to let commoners into the upper ring, and the walls serve as a barrier.

Small historical bit: states didn't stop building walls after the invention of cannons: what happened was that because of cannon powers, walls started to be build lower but thicker, with dirt redoubts and wooden palisade in fronts, often with other fortifications in front of the main walls, which forced the attackers to first destroy those so to get in range, which was time and resource consuming. Walled fortresses kept their strategic importance well into the 19th century, and while city walls may have lost their military function, it is quite a waste to actually tore them down. In Rome, we still have big pieces of the Aurelian Walls.

I'm sure it helps that not every threat would have a large number of cannons and cannon ammo -- pesant revolts would be short on them, for example. And forcing people to use a limited number of gates helps with policing and crowd control. Plus every cannon shot they waste on your walls are shots they're not using on your army.

I think the beams would have to be leftovers from fire nation ships from the war. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just lugged them on to ice blocks and used them for support that way
@xUN1T

But why would ice would move different directions and different amounts? Shifting ice might explain why the beams aren’t level but not why they’re asymmetrical. Also, they look like steel, I wouldn’t want steel in compression, that’s something you’d want concrete for. If these are structurally important, they’re more likely in tension. I think the most likely thing is that it looks cooler to have them going different directions so the artists did that.

The Beams are there to keep the Ice cave open but also not letting it completely separate either. if they were not places weirdly like the serval thousand tons of ice would collapse in on itself and the reason why they are Placed strangely is simple to spread out the weight better than if they were straight on, and they can resist shearing forces better being staggered weirdly like that

I feel like it was hinted at well enough in ATLA that the cold suppressed fire bending, but firebenders with sufficient skill and training know of ways to counteract it. We see in the north pole that Zuko emerges from icy water and uses his fire breath to warm his hands after Iroh told him to remember his breath of fire. I also don't recall seeing anyone other than Zuko or Iroh breathe fire, so I feel like it's a rare technique that isn't as impacted by the cold

I think what really elevates Mako giving his scarf away for me is that it is a permanent design change. So the moment itself is small, but it has lasting consequence and even if Mako has been insufferable at times, they did set up how important his scarf is to him in season 1. The episode isn't a standout, but Kai being a thief is fun and Korra and Asami hanging out is fun.

Just saying that as a competitive martial artist artist who has used that move before, Asami’s scissor leg throw to knock the guy off the motorcycle is more plausible than that looks. to do it to someone coming at you on a moving vehicle would still be insanely difficult, but you can negate the impact by finishing the twist with your hips and the energy and momentum are transferred into the force that tosses the guy off.

To answer the comment about walls. Cannons made high walls like castles less common, but things like star fortresses and bastions with ditches and low defensive positioning walls were used up until the mid 19th century. The real killer for fortress style fortifications was modern arching artillery with high explosives. Walls stop cannonballs and gunfire. They trap you in against artillery that lobs explosives into your city or town of fortress. Air power exacerbated this, but defensive warfare had largely moved underground by the time we had bombers

Aeronautical Engineer here, but we take a lot of mechanical classes. If we assume this is not in a place with near-constant temperatures, especially above the melting point of the water a few things can happen. Firstly, the ice can itself shift and crack. While having people down here, that could be catastrophic, so the struts would make sense in that case. In terms of the way the loading would be applied (on angles, rather than straight across) could be a product of two things: 1) the ice shifting has moved where the anchors are relative to the glaciers, or 2) the glaciers also needed some vertical component of support with the primary concern being us getting squished between the ice a slight incline would make sense in this case. The alternating style actually provides bending and torsional resistances across a 2-d plane better than if they were all angled in the same direction.

historian here! the main reason why city walls fall out of use is because: cities started to grow rapidly during industrialization, they grew too fast to build new walls around them, and they needed a lot of space for huge factories, ports, and warehouses. in the modern day walls are mainly used by governments to control the movement of people, to keep them in, out, or segregated. that is why to me it makes sense that ba sing se would still have its wall, they are for control not defense.

I don’t think the city’s walls are that useless against flying vehicles. Anyone unauthorised to fly over them would just get met with a volley of rocks right into their propellers/hull. An issue only arises at smaller, more nimble planes but lucky shots are still a thing. Considering that and the myriad of guards posted on top of it I think the odds are pretty low of flying in

While other people have pointed out that the walls of Ba Sing Se are maintained because of their cultural significance to the Earth Kingdom (much akin to the Great Wall of China Today) I also want to point out that they are socially important to the pseudo-caste system the earth kingdom has going on. The walls separate the rings of the city, allowing the wealthy and powerful to live out their lives without having to reckon with the reality of the slums of the city. They aren't just to protect the city from assault, but also to protect the oppressive social order.

The walls achieve very little defensively now, that's absolutely true, but what are they gonna do - pull them down? The city is huge into tradition, and like other commenters have pointed out, they still divide up the 3 rings. Yes, if the fire nation or united republic, or some rebel faction in the earth kingdom, were to invade the city they'd fly right over the walls and bomb stuff... but land armies would still be unable to march right in, short of having earthbenders ready to tear down the walls unopposed. Basically it's a mixture of: - the walls continue to exist because why wouldn't they, there's no real reason to tear them down - they still have a defensive use, just a more marginal one - most enemies of the kingdom, like random bandits, won't have advanced airpower - the city has anti-air defenses, as we see in ATLA, in the form of surface-to-air rocks which they can launch VERY high it seems - the walls continue to have a use in maintaining the class system and ring structure - they're a traditional feature which is like a wonder of the world, in a city led by a secret police who "maintain traditions" under a queen who is all about that stuff

We didn't stop building walls because of cannons. Plenty of forts were still made before but also loooooong after the apparition of cannons. We stopped "building walls" only around the cities, because at some point the population would just start to grow immensely and expand out of the walls so tearing down old walls to rebuild new ones further away was just a stupid and pricey endeavour. Walls were made a lot less efficient in the "traditional" way of building it (think like a castle rempart) and instead they needed to be built in a very different way, which would not fit at all within the design of a city (check out Vauban's fort style). Warfare evolved significantly but walls were still a big part of it for a long time. instead we started building forts and defensive structures to protect strategic points to ensure the enemy *didn't* get too close to the cities (or inside of them). We really stopped building walls after WW1, where the development of long range artillery as well as military planes and ballons proved that walls weren't really doing much anymore.

Walls may be mostly obsolete by this point in the avatar timeline, but why would you go through all the effort of disassembling such an enormous and culturally significant structure. With earth bending, it wouldn't be hard to add extra gates to expand the city outside the walls if space was an issue, and taking down the entire wall would be a huge project since even if the actual dismantling wouldn't be difficult, you still have to find somewhere to put the hundreds of thousands of tons of stone which make it up. Our own world has much more fragile structures that have survived either by happenstance or active preservation for much, much longer than the 80 years which have passed here since we last saw the wall, so I don't see a reason why any significant portion of such a monumental component of the city would have been altered or removed, even if it was no longer a key part of the city's defense.
