7:30 Luke went back to Obi-Wan’s hut has found his journal detailing how to construct a lightsaber, and some of the exterior pieces were already available in the hut explaining why both Obi-Wan and Luke’s saber are similar (more on that later). He got the various components such as the power cell, superconductor, energy gate, and modulation circuits from Mos Eisely. In Legends, Luke had to make his green crystal synthetically whereas in canon, he got it from the planet Christophsis. As for why the sabers are similar: Luke was originally supposed to have Anakin’s lightsaber back. The first scene shot for ROTJ was a deleted scene of the heroes returning to the Falcon during as sandstorm after defeating Jabba. There are behind the scenes images of Mark Hamill holding Anakin’s lightsaber but he’s confused about it and explained it to George. So the production crew went into the Jedi archives, snapped the blade off of Obi-Wan’s dueling/special effects lightsaber, gave it to Mark and said “here’s your saber”. They then created the lore of a Jedi modeling their saber after their master. As for the green blade, it was because Lucas and the producers were concerned no one would understand Luke made the saber or even that it was “new”. So Lawrence Kasdan suggested that it be green and that Vader should say “I see you have constructed a new lightsaber”. So contrary to popular belief, it was NOT because of the Tatooine skyline.

"I'm a person and my name is Anakin!" *"That name doesn't hold any meaning to me."* I love watching the Luke/Vader talk scene when you take in the other films and shows. Adds so much layers like Ben Kenobi telling Luke about Vader and the Jedi in ANH. I agree with you that Obi Wan never believed Anakin could be saved. I think him apologising was to be taken as him still seeing Vader as Anakin only for him to not see his friend. Which is what I take from the scene when Vader admits Obi Wan once thought as Luke. Though I would've liked a scene in the Kenobi show where Obi Wan offers a second chance for Anakin only for Vader to turn it away.

I never thought about the C3PO sound effects before, but this just came to mind: how does a droid even hear? They don't have ears like a living being. One can assume a droid records the sounds around it and analyzes them. This is hearing to them. So it is possible that C3PO has recordings of everything he ever heard (at least since his latest reset), since these recordings would also function as his memory. It isn't unreasonable then that he can also just play any of these recordings.

Palpatine never cared for the Rule of Two. It only mattered to him if it threatened him. During TPM, his master, Darth Plagus, was alive, and Count Dooku was working with Palpatine. All while Palpatine had Maul as his apprentice. In Legends, Palpatine had a woman named Mara Jade, who was known as the Emperor's Hand while he still had Vader. Lastly, in ROS, his plan was to possess Rey's body. He wanted to rule forever and replaced his apprentices whenever they were no longer of use or a better one came along. He did this with when he had Anakin kill Dooku. So he no doubt would've had Luke do the same to Vader.

3:04 This is interesting to me because even when I saw this before the Prequels and I could still tell it was a force vision Leia was talking about because of the force theme playing and the language Leia uses ("images" and "feelings"), this was only confirmed to me by the fact she unknowingly used the force to sense that Luke was her brother later in the scene. It's not outright stated but it's incredibly strongly implied, I would be incredibly shocked if Leia's mother dying in childbirth was a retcon.

In the script for ROTJ, Obi-Wan's conversation with Luke on Dagobah would have revealed that he and Leia's (then-unnamed) mother was involved in the plans to hide Luke and Leia from Vader and the Emperor. In the script he says "When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant. Your mother and I knew he would find out eventually, but we wanted to keep you both as safe as possible, for as long as possible. So I took you to live with my brother Owen on Tatooine... and your mother took Leia to live as the daughter of Senator Organa, on Alderaan." Yes really, Obi-Wan and Owen were originally supposed to be brothers Also I believe it's revealed in some expanded lore that Luke returned to Obi-Wan's hut at some point and found lightsaber instructions there, which is why in a deleted scene we see him building it on Tatooine right before R2 and 3PO go to Jabba's Palace

Other thoughts: yeah, Luke building a lightsaber between ESB and ROTJ has always been an EU thing, both under Legends and Disney. I'm not sure about the Disney comics version (I know he's been carrying around a yellow saber he found at a temple but I don't know how he makes his green one yet), but in Legends he went back to Obi-Wan's house on Tatooine and found an instructional book, and he cooked a synthetic crystal with a small fusion oven thingie. In the Shadows of the Empire novel he tests it out, telling Artoo that if he blows himself up by having built it incorrectly, he'll be the stupidest man alive, or something along those lines. (He'd also considered having Artoo test it at a distance but decided against it because he felt it was unethical to risk blowing up his droid friend.) And yes, Vader's line "Obi-Wan once thought as you do" makes zero sense thanks to, once again, Lucas screwing around with his creation's history and changing things with the prequels. Would it have killed him to stick to his own story? 🙄 I don't buy the whole, "oh it's only a myth, the details don't matter" angle - bullSHEEVit. The concept of Luke and Vader running away together at that point of the story is one of the most ripe fanfiction ideas, lol, one I've played around with myself. No, I don't think they'd go straight back to the Rebels; as cut and dried a Rebel as Luke is, he's not stupid and he'd know they wouldn't accept the 2nd biggest war criminal in the galaxy, not to mention he'd know his father would have no interest in helping them either - Vader's loyalty is to HIM, his own son, and no one else after the Emperor. I'd wager Luke was planning on going rogue for the sake of getting his father out of this dire situation and trying to continue to persuade him out of the Dark Side so that they could defeat the Emperor together, and after that - he likely wasn't thinking that far ahead. Just getting rid of Palpatine was a big enough hurdle, and he'd have to figure out the rest later if they survived that crucible. Yep, the OT made me love the idea that both Yoda and Palpatine were above the notion of using lightsabers as both were advanced in their philosophies as well as their respective powers. I too think that would've been much cooler. Since the whole Rule of Two and other Sith details didn't exist back in the 80s, obviously none of this was at play within the 5D chess Palpatine and Vader were engaged in regarding Luke's potential recruitment and what that meant for their relationship, but even back then without any of that extra lore, the tension between the Emperor and Vader was still compelling because Vader was clearly just stalling for time since ESB ("He's just a boy, Obi-Wan can no longer help him...if he could be turned, he could become a powerful ally...") in a desperate bid to keep his son alive, and Palpatine was just sadistically entertained by the notion of father and son pitted against each other, and desirous of a superior apprentice to replace the broken Vader. Related to Vader being a more submissive, despairing character in ROTJ, it's very plausible he already knew his ass was on the chopping block and was willing to die if it meant Luke surviving at all costs, and when he talks to Luke during the surrender scene, it's also quite obvious he's convinced that Luke can't survive this confrontation without turning to the Dark Side. By the way, for a REALLY tiny detail it seems you didn't notice, when the Imperials have the Rebel strike team rounded up and the Rebels have their hands up on their heads, you can see the dude who was retconned as being Rex is actually the one who put on the scout trooper armor! I guess that's a nice fitting little touch they didn't originally intend but it makes sense that out of all of them Rex would be the one who'd decide to do that, lol.

I always assumed R2 was making the sound effects for Threepio in the Ewok story time scene. Also, did the Sith rule of 2 even exist when Return of the Jedi was shot? I know the term Sith was used in some media back in the day, but I had never even heard the term until the prequels.
@12bjorn34Ай бұрын
11:42 yes, Palpatine thinks he’s above lightsabers. He despises lightsabers actually, but he knew in the era of the prequels that he may need to use them at some point so he constructed them. However, he constructed his lightsabers primarily to mock the Jedi as much as possible, with phrik and electrum. Those materials are to display Palpatine’s wealth and offend the Jedi order since electrum is supposed to be used only by the highest ranking Jedi officials (Mace Windu even had it) of the order. Phrik is a rare mineral that is lightsaber resistant so the Jedi would need to figure out a different way (besides cutting it) of disposing this offensive hilt to them. Palps preferred to outsmart his opponents and would only use lightsabers in dire situations or to mock and tease his opponents. Love the content, Gold Man. Absolutely love this series and all your funny nitpicks! 🤩 Just was sharing my thoughts on one of my favorite characters

A Galaxy of Adventures KZbin vid & I am a clone trooper book says it is rex. But later on dave filoni said they didn't want to retcon Nik Sant an established character so they said it was up to people watching. 10:50 Maybe thay didn't want to get blast marks on the uniform. 11:26 The emperor would want Luke to fight Vader and win replacing vader. 12:16 original Battlefront games you can't go in that part of the area instantly kills you even with invincibility cheat on. 12:46 Original idea cut from film was when Vader would hold Luke's lightsaber it would go to a red blade and when Luke was holding it - it would go to his color they did not keep this in the film but it may have been in some old comic & novelisation.

I think the idea with the training is that Vader didn't actually know that Obi-Wan was dead. From his point of view, he cut through his old master and Obi-Wan disappeared. He probably just thought it was a weird force trick or something. I think he's just assuming Obi-Wan is still alive and training Luke somewhere. Although he does say in ANH that the day had seen the "end of Kenobi," so I'm probably wrong. Maybe Vader just didn't sense Obi-Wan anymore so just assumed he was dead, and went back on it later. Another thing is that in the novelization, the Emperor is talking to Luke and says something about how Obi-Wan is dead and he had to get his training from someone else, implying Yoda. He mocks Yoda's voice, saying something like "Lives, does he?" And then he discovers he hasn't. But there's still the implication that Palps, and by extension Vader, had the idea that Yoda trained Luke.

The problem I have with Leia's line, "Somehow, I've always known," is that 99.9% of the time, it's laughed at and/or cringed at by viewers because of the retroactive incest in ESB. I've never seen someone watch that scene and not comment on how absurd it sounds in hindsight, and how it makes Leia look like a pervert, and it bothers me to no end because it would've been such a simple thing to avoid. I get what Lucas was trying to express, but since he knew well enough by the time the script was being finalized that he was shoehorning plot elements that previously weren't meant to exist, I really wish he'd stopped to consider how this line was going to come across and just tweaked it to something the audience would've found more reasonable. Something like, "...It makes sense," or, "I understand. We always felt drawn to each other..." and people might have copped that she was referring to both their awkward making-out one movie prior and how they instantly fell into such a close rapport upon meeting and had a strong bond throughout the trilogy. With no conscious knowledge of their sibling relation, it's understandable they mistook some of their chemistry as romance (which has tragically happened to some people IRL), and the line wouldn't be as unintentionally comical and scene-breaking.

I'd assume Owen told Luke that his father's name was Anakin. For all we know, Anakin Skywalker could be a common name like John Smith, so he'd have no way to know that his father was really the famed Jedi. Or, maybe the Jedi's names were wiped from society along with the Jedi themselves. As for why Vader didn't kill Luke in V, yes it's because he was trying to turn him, but the *reason* he was trying to turn him was because he had love for his son and wanted an alternative to killing him.
