Awesome. Been working hard on overblows. Finally got them working MOST of the time (puckered only; still cannot tongue-block any overblow, though I'm told it's possible). But then I said, "So what? How does this help my blues playing?" Seeing that the 6 overblow is the 3 1/2-step bend, opens up a whole world of work for me. Thanks for making more work for me HA!
@jasonricci3 жыл бұрын
My pleasure and Thank you! I can still not tongue block overblows...however I have yet to hear someone who can display real control over them/bend them well. Not saying it cant be done just that that person hasn't really shown up yet. The only advantage I can see to that would be not having to switch embouchure.
@jonathanbouriaque98283 жыл бұрын
@@jasonricci Yeah, that's my only reason. Switching embouchure messes me up. I risk tripping over my tongue and swallowing my harmonica. It's worse than running with scissors.

I love that you address the 6OB as the vii of IV. I do it all the time with the 3D bend, so _of course_ I should be doing it with the 6OB, too! (It's especially fun to hold it over the changes between the IV and the I, letting the chord movement do the work while the note stands still.) Similarly, I love your idea of simply repeating themes at each octave. It fits perfectly within the Call & Response concept, AND alternating between the 6OB and the 7D allows exploration of your excellent lesson on the Angel/Devil conversation. Thanks for helping me to discover all these skills I already had...but didn't yet _realize_ I had. Time to hit the woodshed!!!

Still here J rich, the harp gets frustrating .. That back of your throat quote comes more and more to mind.. Overblows are coming along , just tricky knowin that im on the right hole when I move up to the higher octave.. Scales really suck to learn but a must at a minimum . To play in the scale sounds much more professional than the opposite. I had to change my embouchure , so I could keep even tone as I climb up from low to mid octave. Your the best and Im sure you can see my fruatration ; but I'll manage. Your throat says "93" , if I tatted mines , it would say 12/29/19 😂😂😂😂😂 stay solid bros and as always , Thx ! Damn man, I can overblow 6 really well and 5 and 4 I can do okay, but I just can’t bend the overblow for the life of me. Any time I change my mouth position at all, it stops the overblow. I didn’t even know you could bend overblows until I watched those old videos you did with Adam Gussow and he talked about how that 6 hole overbend is your trademark and then I heard you actually bend the overblow and I was excited to learn it. I’ve been trying all day and haven’t been able to make it bend even a little bit. I’ll keep trying though.

All these tricks are great, I learn and practice as many as I can over the years, but I hardly use much of it in practice. It's good to know - but there really isn't much need to blow all of your guns at once. There's totally a thing about over playing. You can learn all this until you're blue in the face but there's usually not much need for it. Make what you do and indeed know count. No one wants to hear too much harmonica, such an annoying instrument - low tuned harps are much less annoying - I suppose playing in a band and playing on your own are very different things.
@jasonricci3 жыл бұрын
The lesson teaches you how to play and use the same note as the 3 draw 1\2 step bend in the second octave (flat 3rd/minor 3rd). Its maybe the most important blue note as it enables you to play over either major or minor chords/songs. What you do with it is your art. However I would add that being able to play what your band plays by knowing how and where to hit this note is definitely not a "trick", has a definite need (did you make it to the "spoonful" reference?) and makes the harmonica less annoying....
@johnvander89373 жыл бұрын
The harmonica, annoying? Think maybe you have the wrong channel, pal.
@charliemunn59223 жыл бұрын
@@jasonricci yeah, I got that - and yeah, and annoying as any instrument for someone to have to listen to being practiced, but maybe more so as it's so shrill and it's difficult pitch, which is why I'm recommending lower and more mellow tunings. Your lessons are very intense and I'm recommending, or reminding, the importance of not playing and making what you do count. A little can go a very long way. I suppose a lesson which is difficult to teach.
@charliemunn59223 жыл бұрын
Like you explain at the beginning of this particular video; to explain all the over below stuff would take hours. Within that there's got to be an album's worth of stuff. I'm suggesting use what you've got to compliment the other musicians in your band, to make more than the sum of its parts - rather than hurtling ahead and expecting people to keep up... sorry, maybe I'm digressing through my own experience, being in a band and not a solo performer. Each to their own.
@charliemunn59223 жыл бұрын
... maybe I'm talking about production values over musicianship
