Overview of the scenario of having the principle of God's law, the weakness of the flesh, the law of sin which we cannot overcome, our co-crucifixion of Christ, and the laboratory of experience that God uses to teach us to agree with His approach to dealing with sin
disclaimer:
his teaching has been helpful for people, but I must disclaim that my teaching concerning 1 John 1:9 has changed, especially after releasing the book on 1 John (1 John Decoded).
I now recognize that the concept of confession of sin to maintain fellowship is not grounded in Scripture. It is not a requirement for believers to continually confess their sins in order to have fellowship with God. this concept is damaging and is a backdoor for Galatian error - seeking to be perfected in the flesh rather than living by the supply of the Spirit by the hearing of faith. fellowship with God is entered by walking in the light, which is defined as believing in the testimony of God concerning Christ-His propitiation for our sins, His advocacy, and His work in us which allows us to recognize believers as brethren as wel, which is our love for them.
True fellowship with God is rooted in faith in the blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses us from all sin. This faith in the finished work of Christ enables fellowship with God, knowing that there is no condemnation and that we are eternally secure in Him.
In the context of the Epistle of 1 John, the traditional interpretation of 1 John 1:9 has to be discarded once we understand what the book is about. The epistle is written to both believers and antichrists, with the intent to assure believers of their salvation and expose the antichrists in their midst, letting them know clearly that "these are not your brothers." Believers are characterized by acknowledging Christ, walking in the light (which is the truth) and practicing righteousness (which is to believe the Gospel and recognize the children of God). Antichrists, reflecting the characteristics of Cain, deny their sin, reject Christ, and walk in darkness. The truth does not abide in them..
In conclusion, 1 John 1:9 is not about practicing continual confession of sins for fellowship with God but describes the distinction between believers who embrace Christ's message and unbelieving antichrists. Understanding this distinction is vital for believers to have assurance of their salvation and to discern false teachings. It points to the grace and work of Christ as the foundation of our fellowship with God, rather than our efforts to maintain righteousness through confession of sins.
