What a video, and so important. I am also a self taught artist, who didn’t so much as pick up a brush until 3 1/2 years ago. I cannot tell you how overwhelming my own doubts and insecurities have been in determining my actions, willingness to show others my work, pricing paintings, and just making me feel pretty negative about painting. If I wasn’t so completely in love with painting, so dedicated and perhaps obsessive at times, and able to draw from a bottomless well of personal enjoyment from it I would have quit in frustration. Every painting is a thousand little decisions, and when u have no drawing skills, no color skills, no understanding of composition, etc each of those choices is trial and error and an opportunity to learn- but always the hard way lol. Thank you for this video! There are certainly an enormous number of people struggling with self-doubt and lack of knowledge and even a little education, support and motivational talk like this video could determine if they quit or keep trying. And Art is no small part of the spark of divinity within us, if such a thing be a thing at all, and we should foster that spark and elevate ourselves and those around us. Thank you again

Bob Ross once said - I hope your always dissatisfied with your paintings. Then you'll always be trying to paint better each time. The moment to paint a perfect painting you might as well give up - I've paraphrased these comments but his words hold so much truth. Thank you Florent for your words and encouragement. 😎😎

I remember when I figured out how to tie my shoes. I was so proud! It lasted about 5 minutes and then I realized everyone else already knows how to do that. It turns out being able to do what not many other people can do doesn't last very long either. It opens up a universe of things that are better and you didn't understand they were there all along 😃 It's reassuring that there's more than to settle for what you know as if it's everything. The more I can get out of my way with assumptions about how things are the more I can grow ❤

Oh man, I've been struggling with imposter syndrome for the past year (i paint fishing lures on the side), and it truly froze me. I could do any other traditional art, but i could not do what i was once so excited and eager to do. This really struck a chord with me, and i believe it will finally help me get over this hump. Thank you so much for sharing! I can't wait to come back to your patreon starting in August 😊

I found a good start is to say "Not every decision I made was terrible". Then look at my painting and force myself to find something that's ok about it. After a while it helped train me to see what was actually on the paper, rather than it being obscured by imposing my low self worth all over it

Thank you so much for conveying such an important message! I felt greatly overwhelmed today planning for my next big painting- but after watching this video I actually picked up my sketchbook right away and started. It’s so important to remind oneself it’s okay to make mistakes and for creating something new it’s essential to try around and take risks. Thank you for inspiring me!

I went to a major Art Institute in the States when I was in my 20's, spent a ton of money doing so and am almost 50 and still feel inadequate as an artist. But how do I deal with it? I challenge myself. I'm not settled on "I finally made it as an artist" . And don't know if that will ever be how I feel honestly. Now I am going through the Bargue plates and doing a makeshift at home Atelier program, determined to learn to draw properly. Something I never got in art school. So here I am, no spring chicken, dreaming of one day being able to go to Florence to study in a real Atelier. Who knows!? But what I'm saying is no matter how old you are, never give up, always strive to improve and always challenge yourself! ❤

Thank you Florent! I appreciate this video very much. This video is exactly what I needed to hear. Your strategies are very helpful. I have made list of these points that I have posted in my studio to view and act on daily. The key point I am using as starting point is to allow my art to have a meditative, inspirational, and motivating quality. You, Florent, are an inspiration to me as a self-taught artist. Merci beaucoup! 🎨

Thank you ❤ I was a Art school Student for two Years and was told by my teacher that I am not original. Fact is, I was not inspired and the pressure to create a lot of paintings in a given time and given sujet was overwhelming. Since that time I did not paint anything at all. I am stuck 😢

Do yourself a huge favor; forget what he said. Art schools are notoriously pretentious places and uninspiring. I spent a lot of money learning nothing at a major art institution. Now I'm challenging myself and going through the Bargue plates because I felt like I never learned properly. Challenge yourself or simply do something you enjoy by finding inspiration in a book or online. Look at the Master's or look at contemporary art. It's therapy and a gift you've been given that you love art and desire to create. Do this for yourself and for others. Good luck and never give up!
