Yes. I fear that I'm not good enough, that my photography isn't good enough. Sometimes I wonder if I should ever try. As you said not trying is failure. I keep in mind that if I do make a mistake or fail I can learn from it and move on. So, I've given myself permission to fail. That's actually helped me to grow in my photography. I still have lots to learn.

A few times and not just with photography. I went though a spell last year with photography, this year barely a day goes by without me having my camera out or working on photographs I have taken. At the moment I am learning about studio lighting and portraiture, but tonight looks a bit promising for a sunset so that is what I will do. Great to have you back, look forward to seeing what you create. Have fun and enjoy.

I know what you mean. I've lived for eight years in Canary Islands, surrounded by ocean and volcanos, a great inspiring place. For covid and family problems I returned to Italy (in a really bad town) and was a total disaster. My soul and creativity began to descend into the basement. Just walking in the woods and taking "small landscapes" with mushrooms saved me from depression. So, I decided to start from the basics, removing the dust from my first digital SLR, (a Canon 600D with a 24mm f2.8) and nothing more. Thanks for this video, you have always inspired me.

Hi, Attilio. Thank you for the inspiration and your beautiful videos. I'm going through what you mention right now myself. After years of absolute passion for photography, I got to a level where I was getting up at ridiculous hours of the morning, taking pictures and enjoying it immensely. After a while I started doing that and teaching photography workshops. And to make matters worse, I started making videos about photography (albeit in my language). And after about a hundred videos on a weekly basis, it came. I was unable to pick up a camera. I wasn't able to leave the house. And when I did go out to take pictures, I came right back home. I couldn't. And it took an awful long time to get better, and even today it's not like it was in the beginning when I was on fire. But I'm kind of hoping that it will come back again, that I'll be able to keep doing what I enjoy most in the world. And one thing I've learned: I took on too much at once. I've burned like paper, but I hope not completely. Fingers crossed it works out better for you than it did for me. Your channel is amazing. Especially in the photography world where 9 out of 10 youtubers are trying to sell something and doing reviews. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Radek

Professor, thank you for telling all your thousands of followers what happened these few years, thank you for making your feeling known to your trusted followers. What would we be without you guiding us and learning. You know Professor in a few weeks I will be turning 91, still have my memory, walk, passion for photography, and you were the one that always made me feel good and a greater desire to keep shooting. I don't have an expensive camera, I have a used Leica X2. It's old like me, but it is my right hand when I go for my daily walks, There is a reason why I went to Leica and it goes back to when I was 19, but that's another story, I am only I person that backs and looks forward to your weekly guidance, but you have thousands of people that wait for your guidance every week. Never give up, and thank you

Attilio thanks for sharing this. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. Failing is part of the whole process. The better we get, the more complicated will it become and the more we know the more we have to learn. But we need freedom to create. Once you try to apply rules and timing to whatever you decide to do it will hurt you in the other direction. One can be either artist or business man, but its very difficult to do both at the same time. We can't make everyone happy, but it is worth finding people who understand us and feel better or blessed by knowing you. Keep your dreams alive for people like me 😉

I love all the sayings, Winstons "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts" is one of my favorites. I am in my 60's now, and as many of us are aware, the ability to say words like Winstons and others can be great timing and meaningful words. However, for any of us who have suffered from a block, or anxiety, though we know the words, the sayings of inspirational people, the fact that we MUST carry on.... the unknown block for whatever reason, renders our ability to overcome useless. Talking about it helps, and experiencing overcoming it, May also help. But that F----in Mysterious block/anxiety whatever it is that causes it is indescribable to anyone who has never experienced it. It ruined the first love that I had studied and worked hard at for 15 years. it happened again in my 40s and I knew enough to pull back, start fresh and push through. I am sure many of us could write books on our own experiences. talking about it is helpful to you, to all of us. With a better understanding of what this is, and how it can be overcome, it can only be a helpful roadmap to others who have never experienced it before and help them push through. Keep Posting your videos Attilio! Love them! Inspirational.

Thank you for the brutal honesty it takes to be vulnerable and real to all of us who follow you. That fear of failure has stopped me from doing so much in my life! Please be encouraged by positive impact you have had on so many of us! After watching your long exposure urban photography (specifically in Milan), I have been trying to find a place where I can try the same type of thing. I’ll be in London later this month, and I have 2-3 spots picked out to try. Your example is amazing!

I think the main reason that we have a fear of failure stems from the fact that we are our own worst critic. I think that you take absolutely amazing photographs and your videos are incredibly inspiring. But, that doesn't mean that you will like them. I completely get the frustration of having creative block and the hardest thing for anyone to do is to push through it. I know that we all support you and the difficult times that you have gone through with this block. I just hope that you can understand the joy that your viewers find in the work that you do and know that we all sympathize with you in these difficult times. I wish it was just as easy as going out and creating a photograph, but I know it isn't that easy. It is much more mental than anything else. You have my full support for what it is worth.

Hey Attilio, thanks for sharing. I've been struggling with this for a long while, especially the uncertainty of whether my photography is good enough. It's hard to take the leap of faith, especially when we have financial responsibilities that cannot be ignored and need to be managed. It's all very well, having the ideas and the abilities, but unless your work is generating an income, it's extremely hard to see the wood for the trees and, the confidence in your own abilities. Putting your work out there is like, exposing some of yourself, inviting criticism, which can ultimately lead to a blow to your confidence. Life, family, finances and the responsibilities these all bring can be difficult to juggle against ones desire to create. This wrestling match can take it's toll both creatively and personally. The justification process is a difficult one, one that I have yet to be convinced by.

Attilio when I fall into this world of doubt and block as you find yourself in now I tend to not doubt my abilities but rather give myself a short break .. a holiday but for the mind .. I search for inspiration through others like yourself.. I look at their work and see how it makes me feel . Or I look back at the images I took years ago and see how I personally have progressed and evolved. We at times lose the moe-Joe .. the magic that gives us the creative world that lives within each of us all . Sometimes that creativity is a little lazy or confused or simply just tiered. So take a short break. Go in search of inspiration and that at times pops up without notice . You will know when it does . Never give up on yourself.. don’t sit on your hands .. we as photographers rely on each other for that inspiration. Like it or not we learn from each other and lean on each other . Thank you for your honesty, your humbleness shines through your work . Stay well and strong my friend.

Thank you for discussing this very important and often unspoken struggle many people go through. It struck me your question about if it was lack of inner tranquility blocking your ability to create. That's exactly what disrupts not only my creativity but my overall process of optimism and growth. It is like a short circuit turns everything off. It's hard fighting through that but I've found that by not giving up, the wires somehow come together again and it gets better. It's great to see you back on the channel and looking forward to seeing your work as it progresses.

I’ve had dreams, but because of fear of failure, never tried, never gave myself a chance. I often think about some sport whether an individual or team comes in second and they are not happy. Thanks for having the courage to share and be vulnerable. Many, if not all of us, were concerned about your absence. Being an artist is not what we decide to become, it is who we are. Thanks for sharing your feelings, Attilio, I know its difficult to over come a creative block. I’ve been involved in photography for 60+ years and have had creative blocks several times. I have felt totally lost, not inspired and useless, I even felt that all the body of work I had created was not all that good and considered selling all my equipment and give-up. I was able to pull myself out of this funk by going to locations that I had never been before or returning to a location I LOVED but didn’t have the time to properly photograph all the sites I wanted to visit but because of bad weather or time, I missed those sites. And this helped me to get inspired and focused again and my mind clear of all other problems. I sure hope this helps a little, you have many people that you have inspired and all of them are here to support you 😊

Hi Attilio, I've been through creative blocks a few times, what helped me on these occasions was thinking that I didn't have any obligation to do something different, special, or new, but just to do what I knew I liked to do, which was and still is to make photographs. Something motivated us to start shooting, this something will always be inside us somewhere, so it's always a matter of remembering that initial reason, which came before the money, before the videos, the initial spark is certainly there, it just needs to be remembered. All the best for you in your returning.

Thank you for sharing Attilio. I really like what you say and find it inspiring. There are many things I like about your videos, the first is you, your tone is calm, you are relatable, you make the process of taking the shot the center of the video. Second, I particularly enjoyed your urban series in Italy, where you have one shot and you take us with you through your process. It may have seem redundant to you, but to us (to me anyway), we got to spend time with you, visit a bit of Italy and witness magic on your camera. Plus we'd learn a thing or two in the process. I think you may be too hard on yourself, you don't have to reinvent photography on every videos. You have a good thing going on, keep us entertained, keep us dreaming, let us travel with you. I have found that when I start to feel that my photography starts to get dull in one genre I will try something new. When there is not a sunset to photograph I will change to wildlife, flowers and macro photography. I feel sometimes we have to be fluid like water and go with the path of least resistance. I have always liked your long exposure photography. It is truly an art in its own right. Keep up the great work. You can do it. One thing I remember is that I am taking photos to please me and not someone else. It is not failure if you are creating something that you like. There have been times that a photograph has not turned out how I wanted it to. I did not let it get me down. I took it as a lesson, dusted myself off and created a better photo on the next opportunity.

Attilio, thank you for sharing this deeply personal video. It had nothing to do with photography but it had everything to do with life. Several years ago I attended a workshop for creative people and the one take-away from it was this: The talents we have are God's gift to us; what we do with those talents is our gift back to God. By sharing your talent with us, you are fulfilling this expression. Remembering this keeps me going as I try to find meaning in my photography.

It usually found in designers. Those who continuously want to improve from present situation. Find it, see it, experience it and find their way to break it. To me, going for a trip or moving out of my city or trying something different, certainly helps to come out. But anyways, we should be glad that we actually see it, while many don't have that chance.

Your words go straight to my heart. Everything you said I've been going through with my photography for the last two years. I believe that I am not afraid to fail. But I don't have a real reason for my listlessness either. Maybe it's laziness after all. But you can't just hide it. I would be happy if we see a lot more of you here. You obviously felt the urge to post this video Attilio and I hope that you found the process, together with all the supportive comments that follow, a cathartic one. For what it's worth, you're an exceptional landscape photographer whose videos are an inspiration to very many people, myself included. Sure, it's nice to see a stunning image at the end but that's not always possible - it's the journey, the storytelling and the learning along the way that counts and you're excellent at that! Hope to see you very soon 👍

Attilio, thank you for making this insightful video. This struck such a chord with me in a slightly different way with similar results. Recent experience brings me to encourage you to look at this difficult time as a good thing. It helped me greatly. Last year I broke, dislocated and damaged several fingers on my left hand putting a sudden end to more than 45 years as a professional violinist- a job I loved. This injury is a career ender for many and recovery is very slow. As my fingers healed, I went through the same process you described - putting my instrument out of sight, viewing it as an ended chapter in my life, etc. (It was okay~ I would have more time for photography~ which I also did not do) After many months as I began to consider playing again I experienced great performance anxiety and fear of failure on top of the physical challenges. Interestingly, life brought me the tools I needed as I needed them, including an improved understanding that failure - a real possibility - was not my enemy and the fear of it was worse than the experience. The hardest part is finding the courage to start and the determination to put one foot after the next come what may - the rest will take care of itself. It is still early days, but I have learned that there is more satisfaction in focusing on the small efforts and challenges that present day by day than looking too far into the future, and that those daily successes will be what takes me where I want to be in ways I never even envisioned before. New ways. Better ways. And more fulfilling ways. You have found the courage to start and to share your experience. Bravo! It is my hope that the journey brings you new joys and satisfaction and experience. All the best to you wherever this leads you. You have been missed!

Appreciate the honesty. I've been stuck in a rut creatively for the past year or so. I started working the midnight shift and have a difficult time finding enough time to let myself dive into photography and/or writing. Thank You!... For facing your fears and producing content that seems to be pretty much universally loved. Your honesty and integrity are inspirational. Like most, I have nothing to lose if I fail, my day to day job takes care of that.... Nonetheless every time I approach a scene I know is stunning, the fear always creeps in that I will not capture a good enough image, that I will fail. To return your honesty..here is mine....My fear is pretty much always defeated by remembering the lessons you have taught us and focusing on the image. ;-) Whilst not particularly creative I can promise you, your faithful friends here would be happy with a snapshot of your camera bag on a beach......preferably a beautiful beach with a stunning sunset and a lady in Red holding your bag, whilst capturing an Orca Whale leaping from the Ocean.. ;-) Be Well Attilio...You are Loved.

All the best go thru creative blocks. Even though I am relatively new to the game I have been thru it. I think your right, pushing thru it helps but I found that changing subjects takes the pressure off. I love landscape photography but during a rut I switch it up to maybe (milky way with light painting) or (cityscapes) to keep it interesting. When the rush of learning something new wears off, I find myself refreshed and ready for landscapes again. Thank you Attilio for the time you take to do these videos, the quality is class and inspirational.

Thank you for your honesty and for sharing what you feel. Along with many others here I have been inspired by your work and your willingness to share what you have learned to help us all get better. You're not alone in worrying about your ability to do good work - even the smartest people have doubts sometimes and the only way forward is to accept that you are imperfect like the rest of us. I sometimes still struggle to believe I can keep delivering value to clients, even though I've been doing it for 30 years. Striving to do better is always a good thing, but don't be too hard on yourself. Life is tough enough without giving yourself a hard time! I wish you many, many more good (and great) days and hope you will continue to share your love of photography (and focaccia) with us all. Very best wishes.

Hi Attilio, I’m pretty sure you are not alone with this issue. I see lots of youtube professional photographers going through the same questioning process, but at the same time there seems to be a shift towards more abstract photography (ICM especially). I think it happens because we find it a bit difficult to actually photograph something that hasn’t already been done a thousand times. Abstract or ICM allows you to take shots that can never be exactly duplicated. Long exposure was one area that allowed us to do something a little different but it seems as though everyone is now doing it and therefore the duplication. Not easy this photography business mate !!! Keep at it though as we all look forward to your work,. Cheers from Aus.

I find that "failure" is difficult to accept. So instead of thinking that I've failed, I find myself making excuses. Excuses can be legitimate if there is proof to support the excuse(s). Sometimes we loose interest in photography because we get bored of taking the same type of photos all the time. This is a good opportunity to try a different style of photography. I find myself facing a brick wall at times. Not well experienced, my "know-how" is limited to the work I'm able to create. Education without having to take a course (...or two) only comes from the experience and knowledge one achieves in the field. Everything worth achieving is worth the efforts and energy one invests in themselves.

Bottom Line is the scope in your life. What are you living for? You know? Fine. Everything could then follow this PURPOSE, SCOPE oder WHY of your life. Any plan and project within your life can follow. Photography - I did loss the scope in 2004 until 2015 - you know, analog photography did fail, cameras came up with video .... but then I rethink - making Photos, visualize my dreams there, thinking about new projects in accordance to my life's scope, purpose, etc - that awaken the old Fire. So my suggestion is: Think about the purpose what you want to show your peers, inner circle or even the world. Of course opportunities to shoot trains you to be always ready for the unexpected - but beside try to find out, what you really like. And even then think about your life's purpose - not even 1% of the people do this. Now, Attillo Ruffo - your work did touch me, your art of view to this fantastic universe, the landscapes and the unique beaty of earth - your explanations did give me the necessary push and even brought back my fire and joy to my own photography - it's my profession to train CEOs or leader on above stated purpose, scope and their why in life - and photography is a great tool to combine - with terms like focus, what to do - and like you: Even produce a smile in many faces of this crazy world, leaving footsteps in this universe. And even if you need your TIME OUT - Attilo, I'll wait, take it, re think, look to your work still done - because for me any of your videos are wonderful, and they push me my way - THanks from my Heart. Yesterday I read the comment of that guy giving you the red chair - an unforgettable image - you make the difference in som of our lifes. Thats great! Thanks my Friend. Regards from Germany, pls excuse my poor English

But to continue to practice one’s skills and practice curiosity of what to do further on, is a good way I think. You have so very much left to do and you now there are so many of us to hoping the best for your upcoming journey in this genre. Be patient and have faith. Attilio, First, I want to say that it is so great to see you back on KZbin. I did miss your videos. I was very moved by your video yesterday. And I am heartened with your courage to work through it and find the inspiration from within. I think your advice about the only way to get better is to practice is spot on. That is true in anything we want to pursue. Your words today are an inspiration to me as I had a setback last year with my own photographic journey and I have not fully recovered from it. Two things triggered it in me: we moved back to the city after spending the first 13 months of the pandemic upstate - I enjoyed exploring new things to photograph in the Catskills while we were there; the second thing that triggered it at about the same time was a professional photographer described one of my photographs as ”really boring”. I can take criticism, but there are more constructive and informative ways to criticize somebody’s work rather than dismiss it as worthless and “really boring”. Other people have liked the photograph, but my critic, in this case, did not like negative space and did not like the fact it was not cropped to a 16:9 aspect ratio, and thinks all compositions, almost without exception, have to conform rigorously to rules of thirds. He also ignored the fact that some elements of my photograph did use rule of thirds. I cannot begin to describe the effect this had on me, other than to say I almost gave up photography and felt like destroying my entire photo library. I was totally despondent afterwards. But I am so glad I did not give up photography. While I did not capture the best images up in the Catskills while we were living there, I did come away with a few keepers. During that time, I was also reminded of something important by a famous English landscape photographer - Charlie Waite - when in an interview he quoted the great Ansel Adams who had once said something along the lines that if one manages to make 12 good photographs in a year, one is doing well. This seems so few in a digital world, where it is possible to rattle off a thousand or more shots in a day. I learned from that to slow down with my photography, to take my time. Nowadays when I go out, I may only come back with three or four images. Sometimes they are not very good. Sometimes the compositions are good, but I know that I need to revisit the scene in different conditions and different light.Occasionally, I come back with nothing, and that's ok. The great thing about being in the Catskills was not the photographs, but engaging with nature and immersing myself in it. A deer was born in the woods at the back of the house in June 2020 and over the course of the following autumn and winter, we watched this little one growing up under the watch of his mother. This, along with the support we gave each other as a family, got me through the first year of the lockdowns and not being able to see friends or family, or travel. Landscape photography became my therapy. It is still my therapy in life and it’s the engagement with nature that I value the most. I am also beginning to make a few good photographs, which is an added bonus. I also want to thank you for a video you made last year from Cinque Terre. My youngest son’s Italian teacher at school here in New York is from Cinque Terre and I was able to show him your video, so he could picture what his teacher’s home town is like.

My Fear , or should i say Reality , is that 18 years into retirement I can no longer afford the equipment needed to become half as good as you. But something changed my outlook recently. My Son's family had to move in with me. The 7 year old autistic boy loves to be out with his Bampy in the early morning photographing birds and animals out in the yard. Its an old I phone but I encouraged him with these words. " We must always do the Best we can with what we have at hand " With those words echoing in my mind I will go forward to visit a New England coastline this summer without the fear of Failure. Sometimes it just takes a special child to take you out-of a funky mood and for that I am Blessed.

Demotivation happens to everyone and without us realizing it... what sets us apart is the way we deal with it! I'm sure you will find your way, otherwise we will lose (personal opinion), one of the best photographers on youtube! Stay strong Attilio...you can do it! Cheers from Portugal!

I have watch this video two times to understand the deep concept what you want to tell, since i am following your channel from many years we KZbin member realise your feelings in some extent. What ever be your past , we don't know all, one think i want to tell,. "Failure is not only a part of life but it is like a teacher in life in our journey in the way to success in life". Continue your work as many follows you. Live a happy life. Best wishes
