Starting a painting is the hardest part and it's an ongoing challenge for me.
Few mindset principles in this video won't make the process magically easy but they have insured me to never walk away from this challenge. You don't need to artificially make art harder for yourself because it's already hard enough to be creating something for the world to see.
Special thanks to the guys in Angry Mob who helped me get this video done by keeping me company during the live stream. 🐾💕🐻

For me it’s hard to talk about this because if you really look into it: The only reason why I’d even care about how my new art compares to my last one is just purely ego. Which isn’t all that surprising because it’s the root of all art fears. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be liked or seen but those needs should never be a priority over creating more art. That fear will probably always be there because I am only human and I do want to be liked and seen. However those needs don’t get to make decisions for my creativity. I do my best to silence my own fear based arguments and creativity have it’s say. Sometimes it feels like it was waiting patiently just so I would get the F over myself and we could both finally get to work. Definitely felt l went through that whole spectrum during that initial set of thumbnails. The left one is all the pre-planned garbage. Then I stopped trying-> middle blobs and finally creativity steps in on the right and went like “here let me do one”

I feel this soooo hard. I do a few commissions a month, and I'm still in school, so I get imposter syndrome a lot, but also will wait til last minute because I'm afraid of something new. For example, I typically give myself 1 week to finish an order. Recently I had something that involved a lot of ice, like a whole platform of ice and spiky ice parts, and I've never draw or colored ice before, so I was really intimidated and waited until the last day to even START. Talk about stress. But when I did it, I ended up really enjoying the process, and I think it came out really well, showing me that I am capable of what I set my mind to, I just need to start! But that feeling of fear or intimidation of new things is so strong, it doesn't matter how logical my brain is most of the time, that fear stays strong. I believe more confidence will come with time and experience, but it's absolutely a struggle to get there.

For me the fear will always be there. But I never let it stop me anymore. It’s almost a sign that I’m going to the right direction because finishing a painting despite that initial battle always makes me feel like a badass. Without the fear I don’t think art would be that exciting honestly. Without every project the fear makes you go through the hero’s journey and it’s what makes the process so exciting in the end.

it feels so good to hear someone else describe exactly what ive been feeling when starting paintings. like i get frustrated at some point in almost all of my paintings because i look at my old paintings and im like, how did i DO that? but i just have to remind myself that every single painting is going to go through an "ugly" stage, and the pieces i wanted to give up on because they were so challenging often end up being the most rewarding. youre right, art takes bravery and problem solving, it isnt such a straightforward process. it has ups and downs. i know im just restating what you said, but i just relate to your thought process so much.

A lot of people over complicate digital painting for themselves by thinking they need to master all the options to do a painting. if you know how to resize a brush and can switch colours then you already have ALL of the knowledge on tools to start painting. Art is hard but tools are just tools. Tools shouldn't take more time to fiddle with than the time spent on composition. You can just treat apple pencil like any brush and just get lots of paintings done.

this is an older video but man...This is the fith time I watch this. I know exactly what you mean. Finally someone find words for it. I struggle a lot with intuitive painting but because of your videos slowly I finde a way into it. It happens just yesterday that I experienced finding an idea in the flow while trying and playing with colour and light. I know the spark will come, but my inner monk tries always to persuade me by saying I have to all figured out beforehand.... that it has to look so good as the finished paintings from the start. It's frustrating. Mostly my inner monk and I fight and then I do it my way. :) I used to wait for the spark to come, but learn, that ideas come in the process. So thanks for your video and inspiring thoughts.

It might seem like by writing a video like this that I have it “all figured out” but the truth is that the process you described often has to be repeated with every challenging creative project. Art is incredibly humbling experience even at the best of times but doing it from a place of kindness can really help quell those fears that stem from my ego. If your art can serve a purpose in the world then it’s worth the challenge, work and courage that it needs.

I feel like you're always discussing things that I struggle with as a fellow artist, and your thinking towards these struggles and difficulties make me feel so much better and have hope for my own creative future. It's so hard for me to enjoy the process and journey when most of the time I feel like I don't know what I'm doing and that I'm always just winging it, but I guess that that's all part of my own creative process. That's how I figure things out, and to be honest, it's the same for my life as well. I feel like I never really know what I'm doing and just wing everything I do. 🤣

There’s a whole video that I should make focused on this but honestly as harsh as this might sound: NO ONE CARES! Like literally. I used think it’s scary to make all my experiences and opinions visible to others in art form but what I soon realised is that absolutely nobody cares. This is all a GOOD thing. It means you’re free to do as personal art as you like without worrying what other people think. Because they are all just way too busy and scared having those same worries about themselves. I should have a flowery embroidered sign in my workroom that says “no one cares” whenever I get that same feeling of being afraid to put my thoughts and feelings out there for others to see.

I have ADHD with a big executive function issue plus crippling perfectionism which makes the act of drawing near to impossible although I love it. I developed sort of a fear of art because of that. First of all I'm sorry if what I'm saying here doesn't fit your condition. I'm not going to pretend to know what making art is like for you. However I do know a few things about perfectionism. You seem to already be on the right side of it as you acknowledge that it's a problem. Perfectionism is just a fancy word for fear and too often creative people put it on some kind of a pedestal like it's a virtue. Few effective methods to tackle it is to create drawing or painting sessions where either the time limit or tools you're using makes it impossible to achieve perfection. Set yourself up for failure. Set a time limit of making 10 drawings in an hour. Or decide to make a drawing of geometric shapes like houses without the aid of any rulers or line tools. Hopefully by the end of these you'll look back at what you have done and realize that endless polish would take away the charm of what you have created. Personally I swear by time limits even today and it's the only way I've managed to get all of these videos done.

@angrymikko

I don’t know if I’m qualified to do that. Last video broke my neck and during this one I set my standing desk too low which resulted in 2 days of wrist pain. Honestly the whole day when I was recording the 3 hour version for the Angry Mob I had my hand in an ice bag like some kind of a masturbation injury victim. 🤷‍♂️ Standing desk is great to avoid back pains but it’s incredibly important to have it at the exact level of your elbow or the consequences are really bad really quickly.

@@angrymikko "masturbation injury victim" I'm dead xDDDDD. Hahaha, alright! Thanks for your honest reply! The two gems I got from this are that you have a standing desk and use ice when you're having issues! I've been following a stretching routine in "Draw Stronger" by Kriota Willberg. It definitely helps a lot, but getting up and doing it every 30 minutes really screws up my workflow. So I'm still kind of on the hunt for other options ;_;

Like one day I’m drawing this really gorgeous illustration, but the next day when I’m trying to draw something else with the same concept, it’s as if my brain can’t process how I did it in the first place!! There are a lot of things that I have started to experience now!! Like, when I was younger, all I used to do was draw using references and just think if I’ll ever be able to get original ideas cause the drawing part was never a problem, and now after drawing using tons of references and seeing how other people get those ideas I have started to get my own ideas but just can’t figure out how to draw them!!! It’s as if one problem gets solved and the other arises!!! Have all artists experienced this in their teen years???

Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts and feelings! Honestly, I needed to hear this. All year, I’ve been struggling with facing my fear and trying to make art like I used to. I remember in elementary school, I’d make art so freely without a care in the world. When I hit high school, the freedom was still there but I became highly aware of everyone’s talent and began to question my own. Then I graduated, became an adult with depression and forgot that “love” of art and fear set in. Although I’m back to being a beginner and relearning everything (colour theory, anatomy, etc), I’m so scared of posting online or even sharing anything with my own family. But why am I scared? Like you said, I’m staring at an empty canvas even though I opened it to use my creativity. I really need to overcome that obstacle since I want to lean into my creativity again. So long as it makes me happy, that’s enough. Plus, if I don’t put in the effort or start my journey, what would I have to look back on in a year? Right? Thank you for your words. I’ll watch this video again and your previous ones. It’s strangely comforting to know so many people struggle with this. Like you’re not alone. As for a question outside of this video, will you discuss using references and how it’s okay to do so? I’m pretty sure you mentioned this once in a past video, but it’d be nice to know more of your thoughts and suggestions of doing so! For me, I have aphantasia which means I can’t imagine at all or picture anything in my head. So I rely heavily on references. If I can’t find something online, I usually take photos myself to look at. But, I’ve noticed a lot of debate online that referencing isn’t always good? Or you shouldn’t do it at all? I don’t know. I suppose that ties into my fear as well. Anyway, thank you again!! I appreciate your input and painting videos.

i know i‘m not mikko but on the referencing part: use them!! every professional artists uses references. even people with a vivid imagination such as myself can‘t put the scene/thing onto the canvas as they imagine it in their head. that‘s a very hard thing to do. because of this, pretty much every artist needs references (there are some rare individuals that never use them but that‘s also probably because they‘ve literally been painting and drawing everything since they can hold a pen and it‘s in their muscle memory). pls don‘t listen to toxic opinions that say using references is bad because it‘s NOT and professionals in the industry use it all the time. heck, when time is scarce professionals even paste photographies or structures from photographies into their own artwork, if they got to finish quickly. people that say using references is bad probably don‘t even draw that much, bc how else would you learn how to draw the anatomy and perspectives of things correctly without references? a naked model in art schools would also be a reference. and the greatest artists traced whole landscapes onto their canvas to save time

Think of it that way if you want to draw a car but dont know how it looks you cant draw it. If you drew couple hundred cars already, chances are you can pretty much draw a right looking car without the need for reference. People copy references all the time to study things most of the time they use their own style in studies but thats the style they developed over thousands of drawings. You can start painting simple things from refernce to observe how things look. When you get better you can combine multiple refernces to form something unique for example you use one refernce for clothes, one for the pose, one for the face and maybe one for the car in the background. Most importantly you cant make entirely new things in your head. Anything unique that someone draws is always a combination of different things they already know and you only get to know them by drawing and observing them a lot. Keep in mind that someone like mikko has been painting for several years to the point where he can produce things out of his head. Dont think you have to have that kind of ability anywhere near the beginning.

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
The livestreams aren't really my normal mode of painting in many ways due to the limitations of time. Main principle in a piece like this is to get rid of the layers when they're not helping anymore. If I can flatten it down without serious repercussions, I will. All extra space can be used for the edits later where I will have to work with whatever layer limit I end up with there. Getting a feel for what kind of resolutions you can get away with your workflow takes time so I'm not sure using my resolutions or layer limits would be helpful to be honest. It just might make painting seem more difficult than it needs to be. I recommend using lower resolutions first and slowly working your way up through dozens of paintings while keeping track of how often the layer management takes more time than you're comfortable with.

When people ask me where to start I always say that start small. Single objects first-small. Playing a cello is difficult, I think most people would agree that playing an electric cello requires the same amount of training before the notes sound like they should. The art school I went to taught me to paint with oils. The composition rules are the same. Sometimes the students in my concept art classes have used traditional tools to make the homework. It makes no difference to the assignment or the feedback they get from their work. Just be extremely patient. It’s going to be a long journey but definitely a fun one if you keep at it☝️

I was interested in your opening comments. I’m quite old now, and often feel like I’m not the same person I was 20 or 30 years ago. In one way, I’m literally not - almost all the cells in my body have been replaced many times over! Mentally, I think your mind essentially makes you forgot most of what you have gone through - maybe to make life more bearable? A lot of the important development goes on behind your conscious mind, eventually leading to that ’how did I get here?’ feeling…

That’s interesting and probably has some truth in it. The way to cope with the challenges of painting through that difficult part would be denial. Sounds kinda funny but I can totally see how it might be true. If I look at Zero Hour my initial reaction is: “well this came together nicely!” But it’s still recent enough for me to remember thinking at some point: “this is an utter and complete waste of time and I’m so screwed because the video needed to be done a week ago \o/!!” I’m happy to forget how bad it felt at that point 😅praise amnesia.

If you look at both from a developer standpoint then it’s likely that at some point you’d just want to focus on M1 rather than hold back features due to legacy hardware. Especially in apps where those limits matter more such as video editing and art applications.

Okay so, I have a very specific problem when it comes to art. I've been drawing all my life really, I'm 18 and totally love it and you could say that I'm good at it. But the thing is, I have aphantasia and struggle with visualizing even a dot in my mind, so anything, literally almost anything that I draw has to be a reference of some sort. It makes me want to give up on art sometimes because I lack the creativity and ability to create my own original art and idea. I'm great at looking at things and drawing them but other than that... Anyways do you think this is something that I can overcome by practicing and experience? I've tried trust me but maybe it takes a lot more time to learn how to conceptualize your own art... help...does anyone else have this issue? edit: I also plan to study arts and try to make a living from it after so thats why its so important to me.
@vickyengler21
@vickyengler21 2 жыл бұрын
hmm... how about you have multiple references at once and try to build smth new out of them? i think that‘s how most artists do it anyway. and maybe it also helps you to just largely block in some colors and random shapes in the beginning, of course according to the scenery you want to draw (if it‘s a forest scene then block in shades of green, brown and blue etc.) and try to build up your artwork from there. that‘s what mikko does in his landscape paintings! just „searching“ for basic shapes and building from there. then you can build it up from visual information and don‘t have to imagine it in your head. i hope this helps!😄

Hi, try searching this vid title on youtube "drawing without imagination" from Proko's channel. It's about an interview with Uncomfortable, creator of Drawabox (which is basically a free resource for the community teaching art fundamentals and has a huge following) and his struggle with aphantasia and how he manages to become a concept artist despite that. Hope it helps and all the best to you.

@@vickyengler21 Actually, that's what I do sometimes! I mix in different parts of multiple references and maybe add something original. But even with those I sometimes struggle to make what I actually want, it's kind of incomplete and sometimes seems unnatural if the references are hard to combine. But yes, it definitely helps and I should probably do it more often...And I guess it takes time to learn that better too

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the issue you’re dealing with. The problem can be about communicating a brand through logo, type or logotype. It can be coming up with a design that works as a house and as a boat from a top-down perspective. In composition it’s often about how to build visual impact to enhance the message of the piece. It’s true that in art you can break any rules you want but when a piece is not working then those rules are the most valuable checklist one can have to fix a painting back on course. It’s still possible to break the rules but usually it’s best to do so to enhance the message of the artwork not just as a random act of anarchy🔥
