As we continue to renovate this old barn into our dream home in the Italian Alps, we must dig down through the mountain in order to create a crawlspace and concrete foundation to protect against earthquake damage.

Petty officials who have no knowledge of what your situation is, but insist on making you jump through mindless hoops to fit their preconceived notions of how things must be can be maddening. That's a real shame about the doorway. Grab some cement dye, black blue yellow and white (its hard to tell on camera), experiment with mixing cement to the same colour (when dry) to figure out the ratio of dye. Then pour it in the gap, clamp the stone back together and let it dry (dry fit the stone before you start). Then underpin it but leave a lip on the front and back face to support it properly, then polish the cement. It's more work but it would keep it all original 👍

@@RaisingVoyagers Correct - same here in UK. You gotta dig down before going up to allow room for concrete sub-floor, insulation, under-floor heating pipes (in my case) , then screed and floor finish. I had to go down 350 mm at front and 650 mm at rear (due to slope and step in old floor) - mostly through solid rock, which was schist (easy like your stone), with bands of bluestone (a nightmare!) I was able to use a small mini-digger, but also ended up with damage - stone arch became loose and had to be removed and re-built again later. Also, as the rock does not break evenly some of the inner part of the (600 mm) walls collapsed and had to be re-built. It's great when you get to the stage of going upwards again! We've been living in the house for 3 years now! Enjoy!
@annaf8561

Yes, it is true. But in certain conditions, the normative allows alternatives. Now the point is moot since you have already done pretty much all the digging. With the “vespaio areato “ you have more possibilies for the electrical and water systems and also “riscaldamento e raffreddamento a pavimento “. The other solutions, from what I’ve understood, do not give you all these options.

Have you considered using a pair of bottle jacks to lift the threshold back into place with a steel plate under it, as a platform for the jacks. If you use a grinder to sharped the edges, you might be able to drive it into the dirt on the outside, then support the area with a couple stones, while you under-pin the threshold in sections. You can fill the cracks with a nice mix of plaster and cement mixed with sealant to create a clean surface..

Yes I watch another person in Italy rebuilding there old stone buildings & they seem to have less hassels?????? Perhaps it is the region or township & the people running there region that is part of the diffrence???????

@@jeanadamsick9854 If you mean Luca's channel, I don't think he plans on living there permanently. Not sure though as I just watch sporadically. Although it does seem strange.

Do you mean Martjin in val Pellice? He didn't have stone floor, just terrain to dig.

I also watch Martijn and I think his cabins were used differently, the farmers used the downstairs to shelter the livestock and lived upstairs. In this case their building is registered as a barn and they have to make the conversions to be allowed to live in there. In my humble opinion what the bureaucrats are doing to this couple is very unfair, they are restoring a historical building that otherwise it may crumble and become another of many ruins as we've seen on Martijn's videos and also they are heavily contributing to the local economy. I hope they give them a break and let them finish their home in peace

If you want to attach a machine to a concrete floor you can drill holes & chemically attach the hold down threaded rods. Example Dyna is available down here in New Zealand. This could have the possibility to repair the I think it's called a lintel, you could use ground stone mixed in with the chemical (glue) to help discise the damage, this product is stronger than most rocks

Get some Dexpan Expanding grout for rock breaking, just roto hammer 12 " grid with a 1 1/4" bit the depth you want pour the grout in and in 24 hours the rock will be broken into pieces, No vibration.

How about drilling a series of holes and having him hit those so it breaks away at the holes, but with less time and vibration (line how they cut massive pieces of stone)

When you talked about the amount of water that flowed through the house, maybe you should consider French drains under the floor before you pour concrete. You could run them out the front to edge of terrace to direct water away from the house. It's a shame about the threshold but it's not the whole doorway. I would bet that you could find a stone that you could trim with a zip saw to replace it. It becomes part of your story for the house. Take the old stone and incorporate it elsewhere. Or epoxy the pieces together. Sorry you have to jump through so many hoops for the renovation. Don't know where you find the patients

We were following the very strict laws prescribed to us by the local building code and approved by our engineer. 5 inches of insulation is required, plus 4” pipes, plus 12” of a crawl space plus a lot more. Without this intervention we would not be allowed to live here. But yes, we agree that the requirement to do so is not the best solution and there are better ways to do it, but the law is absolute. We spent 5-6 months researching alternative options and this was the only option that would allow us to live here

Wow what a challenging workspace and what an incredible and difficult amount of work to accomplish! That mini track dumper is a godsend and a great piece of equipment to have. The old threshold looks to have some original grout lines as a multi stone piece, so maybe all is not lost?
