I'm very conflicted about the Hobby Lobby annual clearance and if I want to partake or not. I'm trying hard not to purchase out of fear and my scarcity mentality, that I'm working to overcome. My dilemma is wether or not to by yarn clearance yarn because it's cheap or just by the yarn I truly love.

I finally realized that buying something just because it was a great deal is not saving money. Usually the “sale” items go unused and I end up buying what I really like in the end. It’s a hard habit to break

Yep, that happens to me a lot. When i come to live in the USA i wanted to buy all in the sale. Now i realized that is not always good because i ended with things i really dont need. If it is something i need and love, then yes!! If not, it will probably end lost in my stash

The act of shopping, choosing and purchasing yarn for the potential of making some fun project is part of the delight of crocheting for me. I don't have much money and I don't have 'vices' that are costly to me, except maybe yarn... I'd have a room full of yarn on shelves so I could enjoy looking at it and daydreaming all the amazing things I want to crochet. Having said all that, I could easily see myself buying and not using it up and that seems like a sad and avoidable mistake or waste... I grew up food insecure among other dark challenges. Having a stash gives me a feeling of safety and wealth. I also don't want to end up hoarding and having things that own me and are a burden to have in my life. It's an interesting balance or challenge following my needs/wants as well as creating abundance... Thank you for this video!🎉❤🎉

I used to become obsessed with anything I did. I have learned how to moderate myself. This took time. I don't live near a Hobby Lobby. I have never been to their big sale. I also don't live close by to many stores that sell yarn, but there is always online ordering. I have to budget my money carefully now, but I usually have enough to buy some yarn. I don't feel like I have to jump because there is a big sale. Also, when I plan a project, I figure out how many yards I will need and what that will cost me. Some projects are not worth making. The price would make the garment too precious to wear, or the blanket too expensive to use.

I love how great of a planner you are, I tend to jump in without planning and that hasn’t always worked out! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂 But I totally get what you’re saying and agree. I can’t justify the price of some products either!

Shannon, will you please stop putting my business out there😂 I needed this so much! I've gotten so much better over the past year but the "limited", "not to be repeated", "discontinued" will bring me to my knees 😂 what helps me it to check my inventory- yarns, fiber, and patterns. Typically, when I do this, it curbs my appetite, and I'm filled with gratitude. Thanks for sharing and always being encouraging

I just recently donated a bunch of yarn that I bought when I first started knitting. I would buy so much because I got such a “great deal” and I ended up not wanting to use it. Now I understand that stores have sales on a regular basis. I no longer feel like I have to hurry up and buy something. I only buy yarn now for specific projects. It’s helped me so much! I do a lot of research and I’ve been happier with my purchases and no more yarn clutter.

I would just hold on to the $75 and limit yourself to that much. Then find a yarn that you absolutely love, choose a project to go with it, and even if it's full price, $75 is still a lot of yarn. Just limit yourself to that "free" money. I know it's hard. I'm sending you love and hugs, and just be gentle with yourself. ❤❤

I relate to this soooo much!! Although I did not grow up in poverty or ever have food insecurity I still struggle with “what if I can’t afford yarn later? What if I miss out? It’s such a great price and I have the money for it so why would I pass it up?” But at the same time I tell myself “you don’t have room for the yarn you already have so do not buy more. Every time a new yarn comes out you want to try that as well so don’t buy things that are being discontinued and you can’t get” etc etc. I laughed out loud when you said originally you were going to pass on the hobby lobby clearance this year but now the time approaches and you’re not sure. I do this with sooo many things!!! I tell myself I won’t buy any ____ this year/season and I never follow through. Ugh! I have no answers but this video sure struck me! ❤

This is definitely an issue I have struggled with. I grew up oscillating between poor and middle class. Unfortunately, with my disabilities, the same thing has been happening to me as an adult, so I do hoard craft supplies. However, I do try to keep it organized to just things I will use, but I save scrap fabrics for mending and we use jelly jars for cups. Some of it is frugal habits I learned as a kid that just make sense (I prefer drinking out of glass and my cat likes to break traditional glasses) others are definitely that scarcity mentality. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Being poor and growing up poor is so hard. I'm glad that you are in a position of privilege and financial security to be worrying about this ❤

I’ve been obsessing lately about reducing my stash. Over the weekend I went through most everything and culled out a huge box of mostly DK weight I probably won’t use, so I’m going to donate it. The rest is still way more than I want to have on hand and I regret going overboard collecting it. For me, it seems to be more of a FOMO thing. I realized that I will feel so much better making use of the yarn I already have than I will buying more, so that is my focus… then to add yarn I really love going forward. Thanks for sharing your viewpoint on this, Shannon… it helps me sort out my own stash issues! 🩵🧶🩵

Hi Shannon, I just want to say how enlightening I find your videos. I am 74 now and have come to the conclusion that I have way too much stuff, including my yarn stash. The thing is, all this stuff needs to have a home, be cleaned, and cared for. I also grew from poverty to middle class. You have a pantry, I have a deep freeze, which h is constantly being added to as we use up my frozen food stash. So, this year I have decided that all my makes will come from my stash. So far, I have only purchased yarn for specific projects that I wanted to gift twice, as I did not have those in my stash. I have also taken to donating and gifting yarn from my stash that I know will never turn into a project. The other thing that I am doing to reduce my surplus yarn, is to design projects using the yarn I have and donating them or saving them as gifts. Thankyou also for not being a yarn influencer. There are already so many. Have a day as wonderful as you are!

Thanks for another great video. I totally get it. I have to remind myself constantly that its easier and smarter to let the stores stock the yarn, not me. It is hard to move past the idea that (for me anyway) I may pay more for my yarn if its not on sale. I love that you shared this because I have also struggled with overbuying and FOMO (for me it's makeup but also sometimes craft supplies) and I think its important for more people to talk about it mixed in with sharing fun hauls and projects. I've been working on my shopping addiction for a few years, and am still working always, but here are two strategies I often use. Take them or leave them as you like: 1. One of the ways we can reprogram our brain is to actually test things out. So like, decide you wont shop the sale and see how it goes. Write down how it goes. If it's great, then everytime you need a push to not buy, you can remember how last time you were perfectly fine and you felt great. If it doesn't go well, then.... so what? What was the worst that happened? If you ran out of yarn or didn't have what you needed for a project two months from now, was it the worst thing ever? Did you just order some more with the budget you had then at 30% off and still do ok? Etc. This is maybe a little hard but a great tool in my experience. 2. Go in with a plan. You could set a budget (maybe you don't spend more than your gift card let's say), but I find it's way more helpful and better FOMO practice to make a list of things you are allowing yourself to buy BEFORE you know whats on sale. For instance, I will buy chunky yarns in my fav 3 colors or I will only buy this xyz cotton yarn I know HL makes, etc. The more specific the better. Then only look for those things on sale. If you didn't want something before it was on sale or didn't know it existed, you probably don't need it or really want it now that it's on sale, and are probably only shopping bc of FOMO. Bc we all know our in store selves are not great at separating the two. So let in store self off the hook and do your decision making before you get there. Either way, make your decision and then let yourself off the hook for worrying about any other outcomes. Know that you made a good choice based on the time, money, and effort you wanted to spend and let yourself enjoy your craft whether you shop or not. Every time is an opportunity to practice doing better!

For a few years I used to have the scarcity mentality. But, like some other viewers have said, I found that many times the yarns I bought because they were on sale, never got used. I would say in the last five years I only buy yarns that I know I will use, and for what types of projects I will use them for. I don’t do large “stock ups”. I buy for a couple of projects out, and I know that there will be another sale coming in the future. I’ve gotten to the point I don’t want a large stash any more. Plus, I’m trying to focus on better quality yarns rather than quantity. Just because we buy something when it is on sale, doesn’t necessarily make it the best purchase decision for us.

I have never caught the hobby lobby annual clearance. I'm hoping to this year. I've been keeping my yarn purchases to a minimum this year. I have a decent stash but I do try to hold myself accountable and apply restraint. I went to hobby lobby today to look for some fabric. No clearance yet. I left empty handed. I can tell you they already have fall decor out!! I went to Joann and only purchased fabric I didn't even look at the yarn. I guess for me it just depends on if I either have a specific project I need yarn for or if something really catches my eye and it's a good deal! I'm pretty frugal.

Hey Shannon, reading all the comments it really sounds like we all had yarn fever 😊 but have learned to tame that temptation, what worked for me was organizing my stash and realizing that I had purchased beautiful yarn and it was just there (would purchase because of sales or just because it was pretty) now I have planned out projects for my favorite yarn and will not purchase any more yarn until I complete those projects 😊 so far it’s been okay, I make sure not to watch yarn hauls ( I do have a Michaels gift card 😅). So when it comes to the HL sale I usually miss out. I have participated in the past when I could drive. So in answer to your question. I do feel l miss out on the sale. Shannon, I am 65 and bi polar, so shopping for me can actually get dangerous not to mention problematic on a widows pension. So I only go out to just "shop" once a month. I have SO MUCH YARN!!! I will never use it all in this lifetime. I never hit sales. Or if I do its rare. Not because I dont like saving money. I just never have any money when the sale happens. So I usually get sale alerts from premier yarn, but never from Hobby Lobby, which I do love their yarns. My method is Im not allowed to just shop until all my bills (mostly auto payments) are out of my bank account. Then and ONLY then do I allow myself to shop and by then the sales are usually over. I buy what I will use in future projects. (I too have a youtube channel.) I live a stones throw from Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Joann and Walmart, not to mention a little yarn shop a bit further from my home. So no I rarely shop sales. But Im okay with that, cause it does cut down on just how much I will buy at a time.

I definitely have the same mentality. I wouldn't say that I grew up poor, but I wore a lot of hand-me-down clothing and had to save my own money as a teenager if I wanted anything specific. We definitely scrimped and saved and rarely bought anything designer or based on a named brand. So, I'm the same with Hobby Lobby clearance as you are, definitely with the fear of missing out on those prices. I did do a little better this year and last year, setting a limit on how much I spent and which types of yarn I would allow myself to buy. Also, I tried to remember to focus on notions that I always find myself needing and that isn't already abundant in my stash, like buttons and hooks of particular sizes and notions pouches, etc. (i.e. rather than just going yarn crazy with my entire budget). Also, I will add that I think that Hobby Lobby would do well to do an intro-clearance sale on their new yarns for select customers, kind of like Joann and Michael's have rewards based on prior purchases. To clarify, maybe they could do a loyalty sale where only their new yarns are 50% off for up to some specific dollar amount purchase per person with a special coupon that only goes to people belonging to their loyalty program. I say this because I have found that I tend to only find out that I love some of their yarns when they are already being discontinued. The price seemed too high at the regular price to try them out without knowing whether I'd like them (and I also mean the 30% off price as the regular price because I only ever shop that week, too), but after trying them during clearance, I finally knew that they were well worth the 30% off price, and I would have had no problem paying those prices to keep using them once I knew how much I loved them. I can't help but wonder if anyone else has fallen in love with one of their clearance yarns only after it was already discontinued. It just seems like an up front sale with a special heads-up invitation or coupon for people who love to shop Hobby Lobby to try new yarns they are releasing at an extra special reduced price would be a great idea. It might even help them forecast how much of those new yarns to keep in inventory going forward. Anyway, I know it would encourage me to join their loyalty program if they had one, and I would consider it an awesome perk to have a special invitation or coupon for such sales. Hugs & blessings & keep up the great content!💜💜💜

This resonates with me so much. From childhood to my middle age I have gone through, War, poverty and losing everything I owned. So yes it has affected me and I can see how it makes me want to buy and cherish things that bring me joy. But a new problem is rising and it is morbid. What if I die and leave all of this to become a problem for my child. I try to curb myself and enjoy what I have. I wished I could display my yarn and see what I have. But as many of us, I am afraid of enemy number one the moths and number two family members who think it is take whatever you want for free corner. 🤷‍♀️

Definitely don’t judge yourself harshly. But I get exactly what you’re saying. We are dealing with both our parents overconsumption and I don’t want our daughter to have the same problem! I kind of think you should throw caution to the wind and make yourself a yarn display to enjoy!!! ❤️

JoAnne had a huge online sale, 90% off, so I pulled out some pattern I really want to make and bought yarn for each. That strategy helped me resist bargain yarn for the bargain of it and I feel good about my purchases. So that's my new rule....buy for a project, not just cause its on sale or pretty. Well see how that goes.

Hi Shannon! I always feel like I don’t want to miss out on the Hobby Lobby clearance 😁 I’m actually going there today since I noticed they started marking thing’s down a couple days ago. However, I’ve learned not to buy a lot of yarn that I won’t use just because it’s so inexpensive. I’m going to try to be more disciplined this year and only get what I like and know I will use….if it’s not already picked over 🙂

Amen, my exact story☺️ I think I’m going to try and resist as well this year. I have a lot of yarn that I am not using. I need some ideas to lighten my yarn load. Perhaps I should sell some? They really don’t want yarn donations at my local Charity Center.

Selling yarn isn’t a bad idea, if you know you won’t use it, why not make back some money!

As I sit here crocheting, your words hit home. I have been thinking yes, I have a yarn stash and I am somewhat new to crochet who kinda feels like I need to stop buying yarn. However, it is fun and I am enjoying working CALS and making new to me cotton wearables. When I complete some projects, I will shop from my yarn wall. Good Thinking Be Well

Very interesting discussion! I find for me ADHD adds a layer of indecision and self doubt around shopping choices, especially when there’s scarcity marketing involved. I’ve been trying to hone in on which option reaaalllyyy feels the most happy and satisfying and trust my gut. Does the gift card expire? If nothing is speaking to you right now maybe saving it means getting to use it when something is really calling your name down the road! 🤓

Oh my gosh yes! And then I think I have a touch of impulsiveness to go along with the indecisiveness too 🤦🏻‍♀️ Holding on is an excellent idea! And I honestly don’t know if they expire, I can’t say I’ve ever held on to one long enough to have it happen 😂😂😂

Let me say my yarn stash will out last me . I have fallen victim to fomo at the hobby lobby yarn sale. For many years I have purchased yarn that I had every intention of using and have not. Ihave stopped watching yarn hauls that have been purchased at hobby lobby because it is enticing .the last sale I went with a list of the yarn that I hoped would be on sale that did work I have been on a yarn diet since January my stash has been reduced by 40 skeins I have a really long way to go and at times the stash makes me anxious Good luck

Oh listening to how HL does sales just sounds too stressful for me. I would just end up not doing it. I think we have a HL here in my town but not 100%. I just go to the Michael's down the road. Or I order from Lion Brand.

This is 100% my struggle. I have also had a history of 1) being on a very limited budget and 2) living far away from any good craft supplies. I also come from a large family where if we hadn't stocked up on things in our house, we would literally never not be shopping. So in order to do the hobbies I love, I have always taken advantage of sale and thrift store scores or people giving me things and then Ican shop my stash for every project I want on any whim. I am always torn by the Hobby Lobby sale since that is now just 8 minutes from my house and the only local store, so its fairly easy for me to pop by and check the sale. Do I need the yarn though? Absolutely not. But in my mind I always want more because I dont have "that" yarn. I know it doesnt make sense - I'm actually at a stage where I'm trying to downsize for a big life change, but I still feel compelled to pick things up here and there when I find a good price. So I absolutely get your struggle. It is mine as well.

as food goes you can never have enough as long as your rotating it, working with yarn calms my nerves, i also only buy when on sale, i miss the big sale every year and that's ok i buy when 30% off, buy i do have to limit myself on how much i buy
