EHX Crayon (set zero gain and inceased treble for neck pup only - T1M the Pearl - T Rex Möller 2 - Ceriatone OTS (Dumble clone) set edge of break up. The Touch side of the Pearl stacks with Punch (obviously) and also with T Rex. T Rex also has clean boost set as my volume table. Works really well for most contexts however I sometimes wish I had a RAT or an OCD or something similar.

OCD -- Paramount -- MG -- Mulholland with the gain all the way down and the volume cranked.

MXR distortion (use it as a pre amp) JHS morning glory just a most sparkly drive I also use the red remote for a little more crunch Walrus Audio Mayflower TS808 high gain rhythmic tone. Visual sound Jekyll and Hyde use it for a high gain lead tone and use the green side for a bright volume boost kinda blunts the sharpness of the red side and rounds it out while adding a volume boost.

Not necessarily to bash other channels but to encourage you and yours. You've done 2 things here I haven't seen from others. Explain overdrive order (others I've seen just say generally where to put overdrives relative to other pedals) and unashamedly share the gospel. Great video man!

Yip. Totally agree. Valve amps need to have the power section working too before it’s starts to sound good! And then stack with low gain/drive pedals and use pick dynamics as needed. Less is more. I only really use overdrives to add a slightly different flavour to an edge of break up ac15. We’ll explained! Thanks

Experimenting with a new setup this weekend: EP Booster (always on) => JHS Morning Glory => TS-9 => LPD Sixty 8 All of the pedals sound great on their own, and all stack really well with each other. The EP Booster at the beginning gives everything a beautiful clarity and slight boost in signal. The Morning Glory can be always on for the most part, as it adds a nice break up and stacks very well with the TS-9 and LPD Sixty 8. The gain on the Sixty 8 is cranked, adds a ton of upper level mids and treble in all the right ways, and is extremely dynamic. Even with the gain cranked all the way up, it never gets too heavy, and is almost clean with light picking.

Good day Troy, I'm just new here in your channel and I just wanted you to know that I'm blessed because you share the Word and you share your knowledge in gear. I also play guitar at our church and I'm learning a lot from you. Our Helix just arrived this week and we run it direct to the mixer and knowing this content gave me much knowledge on how we will build our presets for our worship tones, so thanks brother! Praise God! Keep glorifying God with what you do and continue giving great content that help worship guitarists serve the Lord well. God bless you bro!

Late to the party, but a few things to suggest... I just started using a voodoo sparkle drive, if you are looking for transparent, this thing keeps my Fenders sounding exactly the same as without... also, I'd add that the THD hotplate works great to pull back the volume on a tube amp, and still be able to push the tubes.. God bless

Seriously the best and clearest explanation I've heard so far! I'll definitely be keeping this in mind as I fill out my signal chain. Currently it's a Caline Pure Sky (Timmy-ish) into a somewhat dirty Jet City 20. Looking for a tube screamer option to combine, and a cheaper delay with tap option to round things out.

Marshall 900 has op amps and diode clipping. You'd never sound like Zakk, even if the amp was on 11. My 1992 30th Anniversary Marshall (6100) is the best Marshall ever made. 7ct 12AX7s, 4ct EL34s (I use KT77s) 100W / 50W / 25W. Your pedal chain looks good. I believe the KoT is a blues breaker on the left and nobles circuit on the right. Both are soft clipping. The Kilt is a modified Expandora circuit which I believe is a hard clipping op-amp. The Superbolt is an amp in the box with soft clipping. The Tumnus is Brian's take on a Klon (soft clipping). My church rig is simple: Morning Glory V3 into Vertex SSS into Cabzeus Greenback open 2X12--all soft clipping. JHS 9 knob Sweet Tea (Moonshine V2 w/ blend into Angry Charlie) into Cabzeus Vin 30 4X12 closed back. TS circuits are hard clipping and the Angry Charlie, like all "amp in a box" pedals, is soft clipping. Soft clipping tends to be more dynamic and amp-like. This video is 4 years old. How has your rig changed?

That makes way more sense than "stacking" everything. Now I'm going to have to get out the velcro; test and re-arrange. I use an small vox ac4c1-12 for an amp, would you say that is ok, mic'd.

Yes! Used one for years in a small church. Keeps stage volume nice and low! Now I use an ac15 in a larger church but amp is moved to an amp room so I can get it cooking, an ac15 in a small church is too loud for stage monitoring.

Aaron Soots i have been thinking about an kemper or an ax8; but can't justify the cost (yet). I have modded my amp (bright cap mod, speaker upgrade, and 5751with upgraded tubes.) What settings did you like for a pedal platform?
@davidwilsonjr6889
@davidwilsonjr6889 6 жыл бұрын
Catherine Faulkner I have been looking at an ac15; but that was my main concern; how loud you have to get it for that "sweet spot". I love my look little amp.
@TeleCathster
@TeleCathster 6 жыл бұрын
David Wilson Jr pretty loud but not stadium levels. I did for a while use it on stage of a medium sized church but I couldn’t get the master volume above 1.5 which didn’t get the power section working enough for the amp. There was still nice break up from the preamp section but really I felt it needed to be pushed slightly more for the sweetspot. In recent months I have moved it to the back room and mic’d it from there and now I can push the power section a bit more to get a sweetspot. I’d say stick with the smaller Vox if that works for you. I use an ac10 and blackstar 5 at home and that is perfect for home use and would probably work well on stage too however the ac15 has a proper spring reverb and tremolo which I loved and had the greenback speaker so for me that was the better amp and now moved to a better location and using in ears it’s worked out pretty well. I have also considered going helix or kemper but the cost and the fact that you have to tweak so much more than a valve amp that you just plug and play and have instant great tone in 20secs just puts me off.

Plus 1 for Helix. Never ran an amp hot because of the stage volume at church issue. Pleased to run the modeled amps and get great tone. I also run it with a hot rod deluxe to give me the amp in a room feel. the HRD surprisingly works well as a Clean platform. It’s the best of both worlds.

I actually run a Jhs Ruby Red with the drive side always on, then if I want more gain I hit it with a Jhs Kilt V2. And then if I want more volume for leads or intros, I click on the boost side of the Ruby Red. And I have the boost selector switch with the boost after the drive side. Very Bethel sounding and not overkill with gain.

I'm pretty happy with the tone I get from my Vox AC15 at low volume, but my church is switching from stage monitors to in-ears, in which case I think I'll need to run even quieter. Rather than switch to an amp modeler, I'm thinking I might try picking up a Torpedo Live, or some other load box / cab sim. That way I can keep my amp and dime it right into the sound system, with no stage volume. I definitely see the pros to a Kemper though .... thanks for the video!

I’m somewhat torn, I think some sort of modeling amp like a Kemper is the way I need to go. I live in a small apartment and can basically never turn my Hot Rod Deluxe on. My worry is with the kemper is that it’ll be relevant for a couple years then there will be something better and new. It’s much more tech forward than a tube amp so in someways a compare keepers to iPhones. Every year there’s a new one type situation. I know there isn’t a new one every year of the kemper but I guess I’m worried about it being obsolete shortly after getting one. Thoughts?
@Bradleyallen93
@Bradleyallen93 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Blake, that's a good thought to have. Gear changes quickly and as more and more people starting making stuff and tweaking things, there's no signs of it slowing down. I wanted something else along the lines of the Kemper but I couldn't afford throwing out that much money. I found an incredible deal on a Avid Eleven Rack (I don't use a whole lot of different amplifiers, usually find one I like and keep it - it's basically just a platform for pedals anyways) and it has worked out really well. Of course, you don't have the option to download profiles like the Helix or the Kemper but for the money, it's a good option.

Hey man! I would really look into the Two Notes Torpedo line. I have the Two Notes Torpedo Studio (But honestly the live would have sufficed and you can get those used for a fraction of the price). Now I can fully crank my Peavey 6505+ head or my Vox AC30 while my wife is still sleeping in the same room. It's a game changer to get those pushed tube tones but without all the noise to get you evicted. One word of recommendation is that while the stock Two Notes cabinets and the mic'ing system is neat (the virtual mic stuff is awesome how accurate and controlling it can be), I prefer using Ownhammer impulses. I know the UA OX seems to be the newest kid on the block that does that, but I don't have any experience with it.

Apple's business model is to design/rebuild/rerelease a new phone every 1-2 years. And for their products to break down every 1-2 years. Kemper isn't designed to be replaced. It's designed to be a long term solution, and there's no new version on the horizon.

Preach it! How would you apply this to a Helix, same way? Do modeled pedals respond the same? I’ve been finding that with the ability to change the gain of a pedal per snapshot, I’m getting better tones to my ears with one OD pedal with three different gain settings, than having three different overdrives stacked in the traditional 123 method. It seems like you can get all the gain you’d ever need out of a single overdrive, and if you add others I keep the gains so low that all it’s really doing is adding more color, not actually any gain. Is this kind of what you’re talking about? It’s more about finding the color you want than the gain setting you want?
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 жыл бұрын
That's one approach, for sure. I think color/character and gain levels should be considered. The beauty of the Helix is that you the boundaries are eliminated, so to speak. Sometimes I use two Minotaurs or two Timmy pedals. Just depends. And I can do whatever I want with that thing. It's great! But I set it up like I would a pedalboard. Similarly, anyway.

And in case of using a pedal making the overdrive paper of the amp basically always on, in a clean amp? Ideally, he's at the end of the chain, right? Even after the effects? The pedal in this case would be the Catalinbread SFT. I think of using together The Hungry Robot [lg] / Hudson Broadcast and a fuzz (Deep Trip Hellbender / SolidGold FX 76 Octave). I'm going to take your advice on selling my amp. I have a Peavey Valveking II 112. I can only turn on to volume 1 or 2 on edge of break up. I'm thinking on getting rid of it and maybe buy a blues JR ( I heard it's a great amp for low volume) or blues deluxe.

How about instead of cranking an amp, use the 2nd channel of an amp. For example, on my hot rod Deluxe, I could use the 2nd channel and bring the gain way down until it sounds like it’s breaking up. And I usually use the clean channel because I think trying to connect delay, reverb etc to the effects loop is too much of a hassle. Too many cables

I really need some help. So I currently am running Vox ac30 into a di box to get sound out to the system at my church. My pedal chain is EHX soul food>Jhs morning glory>Source audio nemesis>strymon bluesky. So i find that the high top boost channel is too loud so I use the low top boost so I can run it a little hotter. My master is about 12 or 1 and the top boost volume is about 3. I know you said it’s not worth using the big amp but I kind of don’t know any other way because we sometimes go to other churches where we cannot connect to the system so I have to simply use the amp( I can’t do that with a smaller amp and run it the way I want. I went with the ac30 because I needed a bit more headroom bc we don’t only play modern worship. Also my amp is like my monitor bc we don’t use in ears, how can I run it a little hotter without overpowering stage volume
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 6 жыл бұрын
Short and crappy answer: You can't unless you turn the master volume way down, but then you're only getting preamp overdrive, which isn't ideal. How about a Kemper or Helix and a powered speaker?

I love higher wattage amps, like 30-60 watts, but it sucks not being able to run them hot. I can’t deal with the feel/sound of non-tube amplification though. I’ve tried running lower wattage stuff (5-15 watts), but it seems the lower the wattage, the mushier sounding my delays and reverbs get. I use a lot of both because I’m the only electric guitarist so I have a ton of space to fill. What is a good way to combat the lack of headroom and keep things nice and clean?

Don't sell you amp, get an attenuator, crank your volume on your amp to cook the tubes and use the attenuator for your volume control. It's MUCH cheaper than getting a Kemper. I use a Weber attenuator.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 4 жыл бұрын
I actually don't recommend attenuators. The amp still has to push a good amount of air (i.e., volume) to get a good mic'd up sound. When attenuated, a mic'd amp can sound anemic to my ears. I much prefer the Kemper. To each their own!
@JR-to8sn
@JR-to8sn 4 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarforHISGlory Okay, many, even pros use attenuators. In your video you discuss how you can't get the natural OD out of a high wattage amp because you can't turn the volume up. The point of the attenuator is that you can turn the volume of the amp up to get the natural OD tone of the amp and attenuate the volume down to a "bedroom" level. My comment was addressing your comments on only being able to turn an amp up to 1 or 2.
@GuitarforHISGlory
@GuitarforHISGlory 4 жыл бұрын
Jeff Rude And that’s only half the problem. We still have to solve the problem of getting the signal to the PA system. Your suggestion isn’t bad, I just don’t agree that attenuators are the ultimate solution. Now, an attenuator/cab sim combo like the UA OX? Now we’re talking!! 😎
