Overdub Sessions: tune to the song

When tracking guitars, it often helps to tune to the song. Tune your guitar for better ringing chords, more open string interplay, etc, depending on the key the song is in. This song needs some heavy rock guitar tracks. It's also in the key of C. So, how to tune for the song? We're going down...

Justin, thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us here, it is invaluable. I was just thinking about how you swap tunings on your guitars alot, and just run with it, versus the mindset of having a specific guitar for a specific tuning. very cool! Just gonna throw out an idea for you. Overdub Sessions are my favorite to watch of yours. A while ago, JHS Pedals did a viewer submission challenge where they provided a barebones backing track, and then asked all their viewers to take a stab at adding their own overdubs and parts to it, then taking a few weeks and reviewing the submissions. I think that would fit right in with your channel if you did something like that, and I know you would have alot of your viewers here participate! Just a thought, figured I would throw it out there. Thanks for all you do for us.

Question Justin: You make tuning a guitar look so simple. I assume you use an electronic tuner in watching you tune down and up. Without any touch up. After I get one basically tuned I have to touch it up harmonically and then with a standard A, D and G chord. And as the scale is imperfect, I get it pretty good. I remember Joe Walsh saying the hardest thing to do on a guitar is Tune It!!! Joe is RIGHT!!!!! How do you do it so fast? Is it your ear???

So, when you tune down (or do any other sort of alternate tuning) are you thinking about the chart still in C or do think of it in D, i.e. you're playing a D shape for the I, so are thinking I in D or are thinking of II in C. Hope I'm making sense.
