To be fair, Auto-tune has been around a LONG time. To some extent, it was around in the 70s and 80s too, in that you can tweak EQ settings and reverb to make a vocal sound more in tune. And, I agree Zac Brown sounds like 90s country. His new track MN takes him sound like Vince Gill Also, saw Jelly Roll in North Little Rock... It was AWESOME!

I may not agree with you on some of the new country stuff (thank goodness we can have different opinions and still be ok, right?!). But I am absolutely with you on the cheap old janky catalog guitars. My current favorite acoustic of my arsenal is the early ‘60s Harmony arch top I resurrected. I have a few different little old acoustics and weird electrics from the early ‘60s and they’re fantastic. Nothing has that sound.

I agree, the beginning feels a bit fast. Maybe start 5 or 10 bpm slower and increase the tempo between the 1st and 2nd verse? I like the tempo better as the song goes but it felt too fast in the beginning. Maybe that's due to the guitar not being on-tempo? IDK, maybe tempo changes are difficult to do with a DAW? I'm just learning with a DAW (Presonus) so I don't know what all is possible yet. For me, the end was a little anti-climatic. It felt a bit abrupt? Overall though, a huge step in the right direction! Still dig the guitar solo. I'd love to hear some backup vocals too. Maybe see what Merry Clayton and Lisa Fischer are doing these days? Good job guys!

At the end of the day, the music business is a BUSINESS. It's simple economics. Supply will follow the demand. If you are selling veggies on the side of the road, how many artichokes are you going to sell vs. how many ears of corn? You are going to bring a truck load of corn and a basket of artichoke, right? That's because corn sells. Just like modern music...that stuff sells, like it or not. The majority of people "buying" music are the youngsters. Personally, I might buy 3 or 4 per YEAR. These teenagers are most likely buying 3 or 4 a day. Who do you think the music business is going to cater the music they are producing toward? The person buying 3 or 4 per day... That being said, there is a TON of great music being produced by indy artists. You just have to hunt a bit. For example, I've been following CoJo for 6 or 7 years. His best stuff was recorded before he got tangle-up with Nashville. Not that the new stuff is bad, I just prefer his older songs. So, if you want better or different music, you'll need to buy more music to alter the algorithm.

As I get close to retirement age, I contemplate moving away from the home that my wife and I have built, to something a bit easier to manage and cheaper to maintain. We have lived here for 20 years. Our children grew up here, our grandchildren frolic here on the weekends. We have raised a few foals and a few dozen calves here. I know this 15 acres better than anywhere else on the planet. I know every weed, rock, blade of grass, feral cat, etc. We have 9 family pets buried here. I know I should probably go somewhere that is easier to maintain. I don't know if I can leave emotionally though. I have laughed, loved, cried, struggled, succeeded, sweat, bled, almost died, and relied on the clean air to aid in my recovery. If I leave, I could most likely live longer but I think my spirit will be broken. Maybe I'll stay and take my chances..........................

I think this is interesting content...I play in a modern country/red dirt kind of thing. I have come to realize, if one of these old heads walks up with a $50 spot and says his old lady wants to dance to Neon Moon, it's wise to not tell him to f-off... But...UNO reverse card...I am having to make the concessions for the old heads. The kids seem to be more open minded and dig the more original stuff.

Man I can be pretty grumpy about modern country, but even I dig that song. Eric Church’s “Sinners Like Me” record is great IMO. First time I had heard Jay Joyce’s production, which I mostly absolutely love. “Springsteen”, while on the pop-ier side of things, is no exception

What I am curious about is why reverb and delay on a studio board? In L.A. sessions, producers will often want those things turned off (e.g slap and plate) unless you're The Edge and it's part of the main rhythmic sound.
@JustinOstrander20 сағат бұрын
It’s different these days. We all kind of self-mix our sound. Also, those pedals aren’t turned on unless and until you’re recording a part that would benefit from their presence. I try to keep these effects on the subtle side when using them so I don’t back the mix engineer into a corner. It just depends on the intention of the part

I'm 66. Retired in 2019 (phew!!) but I will never forget on one of my dozens of work contracts as a CSR with a finance company. I was the oldest guy on the team by at least 20 years but they were all great folks and really enjoyed working with them. During slow work times me and this young fella would talk about music. We both had our opinions and of course mine was an arrogant statement like "good music died in the 70's". He just waved his hand downwards and just said, "dude, you're stuck in the classic rock era. There is still good music being made!" I challenged him to send me some. KZbin was blowing up right around that time. He told me to check out, a couple bands, i.e. Band of Heathens, Paolo Nutini, Band of Horses and a few more. These band blew me away!!! I thanked him for giving me a wake up call. The only way to discover new music is word of mouth.

It’s the cycle of things. Each generation has disliked the new music that is popular and thinks the old stuff is better 🤷♂️ some of it is nostalgia. Some of the stuff is a point in that has passed and couldn’t be recreated even if they wanted to, the vibe is gone. It’s all good to have the variety we have now with instant new music. We won’t like it all, but hey, move on and find something you do like😊👌😎

I’m sick of people constantly complaining, trying to tell me music died with the Grateful Dead (yuck). I’m in my mid 50s. Metalhead from Europe actually. Mostly what I listen to these days is current country, current metal and some classical music. I appreciate the musicianship and production. Yes, some of the stuff is just stupid and especially the bro country stuff with the trucks, beer and-pretty-feet-on-the-dash can be grating. But I find myself lasting longer on the country station than the classic rock stale noodling (before I switch to conservative talk radio). As a musician and as a person that’s where I’m at. Sue me. And I like that there are so many strong female singers in these genres. You don’t find that anywhere else. My stars these days are the Justins of the industry who provide the little nuggets and highlights.

I'm 62 and been playing for 58 years. Why would anyone want to play rock-n-roll in Eb? Perfect example is Rolling 7s by Dirty Honey. Great song, get the guitar and try to learn, ... dammit Eb? What the hell? Why? I understand the 7 string guitar, to scare all the little kiddies with killer overdrive. But don't detune the guitar.
@JustinOstranderКүн бұрын
I guess my question is, why *wouldn’t* anyone want to play rock-n-roll in Eb? It’s tougher sounding, inspiring. The guitar responds differently in a cool way. SRV lived in Eb standard. Re-tuning can be a very quick and painless thing, especially if you do it often and your ears zero in on your target pitch. My guitars probably spend most of their time in Eb. But I also love Drop D, double Drop D, Drop C (that’s Drop D a whole step down), not to mention open E and open G. I just don’t think there is anything special about standard tuning. There are entire worlds to explore outside of it. Put a Ry Cooder record on and tune to open G. Good times await.
@DavidLWhitehurstКүн бұрын
@ yeah I know. I do drop D a lot but the Eb thing throws me. I have an electronic pitch shifter and I can make a preset for it. I just don’t like change I suppose. And, the Dirty Honey does sound cool. I’ll come around.

I also prefer more "character" or "vibey" elements of recordings in music regardless of what era or genre they are from. It seems that a lot of modern music opts for more pristine or polished sounds, which ends up all sounding the same. A lot of indie artists I love purposely avoid that and use vintage gear to find creative sounds. As for cheaper guitars, I highly recommend checking out the Guild 300 series such as the OM-320 or D-320, according to video reviews they sound absolutely amazing for only $300! They nail the classic vintage woody tone and are build with very high quality!
