There are plenty of players that are good with Gief, even online. Played many myself. He struggles with zoning but that's nothing new. The problem in SFV is that matchups are not a factor for every character. Chun... go for it. Gief? Prepare to build a different path to victory for damn near every character. I really, really wish they would have kept his banishing palm, though. That's a heart breaker.

The main reason is they removed his green-hand (banishing flat). That was his main way in and it helped him beat fireballs. Now, he just eats a ton of damage while trying to get it.

William Bochat I understand the result, but not the reason. They could have easily kept it in and given it tighter timing (ie, Bison's teleport) and possibly reduced the distance on the vacuum of his v-trigger. I'll make a case for it no matter what due to the fact that it was a part of Gief for so long. Hate seeing characters that are harder to play lose their basic tools.

I wanted to point something very interesting and important about what Chris G said. He said, "I just have to accept that in a 2 out of 3 setting this may occur in tournament, I may lose to the last three necalli players in a tournament." I don't agree with a 2 out 3 setting in a tournament, because it's not enough time to understand and adapt to a certain player's playstyle. The mind games are still there, but it would be more effective in a first to 3 or 5 set match. The players will have enough time to try to study their opponents and try to adapt different strategies. The player with the most adaptation during a match will be victorious. That is true high level play. Topanga league got it right.
