Overhauling a Ford Focus TCM - Part 2: Inspecting, Testing the Capacitor and Soldering

Part 2 to my last video.
I tested the capacitor and installed a new one plus soldered the electrical pin connections with silvering adhesive ordered from Walmart. The Dorman rebuild ordered from JEGS has been pretty reliable, so in the end, I never did install this TCM to see if it worked. I'm not quite willing to mess with my primary daily driver and risk having it break down on me. Instead, I'll send it back for the core charge.
I did see another video which showed how to squeeze and twist the electrical pin connectors to release the top printed circuit board. If I was to do this again, that's what I'd try. Hopefully though, there is no 'again' and this is the end of my TCM misadventures.

Higher reading on many capacitors usually means they are internally leaky.

Theres a recall for the tcm currently that includes a friends 2015 focus. Shes had both her clutch actuators changed twice and yesterday once again she lost reverse. The local ford dealer has refused to oerform the recall and says "no that's not the symptons" (losing reverse ). Im goinf to try and clean the actuator and lube the forks today. Tomorrow ill call ford directly to complain about the dealership Interesting videos, i would have loved to see you test it but i understand about having one car and the headaches that could happen.

How long did you have to wait for the dorman TCM after you ordered? Called them last week and they won't have any for about 2 months. Did you get it programmed at the dealer?

I had to wait about 4 months for the Dorman TCM. It came pre-programmed. The only thing I had to do was the Adaptive Learning for the clutch positions. I did that using downloaded FORscan software.

So im looking at all that microcircuitry and picuring it sealed up in an aluminum case attached to a car engine and transmission in a hot engine compartment on 100 degree day. Kind of hard to imagine it lasting more than a week.

The Dorman rebuild I have in the car now is still working. I'm still waiting for my core charge refund on the one in the video.

How did you order the TCM from jegs by part number? Or by TCM

If I remember right, I think I just ordered it as the TCM for my year of Focus. It should be the Dorman 609-031. I paid extra for the 3 year warranty on mine.

No, I did eventually send the old one in for the core charge. I was going to try it in my car again after working on it, but after the Dorman one had been working so reliably, I didn't want to risk having my car break down again.

224 Farads and what is the part number?

It was a 2200 microFarad capacitor, Illinois Capacitor P/N 2200UF50VTT

The TCM P/N is 609-031. I ordered mine from JEGGS.

Pretty much. By the time the silvered adhesive arrived, I had the other TCM. I would have installed the old one after I fixed it, but my wife and son needed the car too so I never had a chance to work on it.

So after all this you're just not going to try it out to see if you achieved a repair? I'm not really understanding the point of your two videos then I could be wrong but let me know

I had fully intended to put my old TCM back in the car to see if it worked, but after a $400 tow bill the last time the TCM died on me, I didn't want to risk it. After about a month of having the old TCM sitting around, I sent it in for the core charge.

Uh huh,we know that, at the end. The point of your video was to see if you achieved registration of the malf unit. It was misleading. Step back and review your video from the standpoint of somebody other than you seeking some information did a friendly advice Mister have a good day
