my tip for using a torque angle guage: Mark the 0 degree position on the bolt before you start turning it. That way when you make a mistake with the gauge, you can use your mark to estimate the correct position which is much better than trying to guess how far you turned it before making the mistake.

1:24 looks like its from Dexicool that had a small amount of air in it causing it to react and create sludge. The color changes over time from not changing the coolant for years and can get like that. Ive never seen it that bad before though and dried out. Great video.

A better way to dress the crank journals is to wrap the sand paper with oil completely around the journal..then use a string to put a half hitch or two around the sand paper. Pulling the string then back and forth will accomplish several things. Number one it will allow you to face 360 degrees of the journal, the string will keep a nice even pressure .. you will be surprised at how good of a job it will do.

As soon as I saw you knock out that freeze plug I knew why it was clogged. I just commented on another video about that red GM antifreeze, it is terrible stuff that clogs and corrodes every engine it is put in. They claim it is good for up to 5 years but, if you have to use it, do a flush and fill at least every 2 years.

My '04 Impala is still running well with no coolant leaks (19+ years so far). I keep a maintenance log in the car to track oil changes and other fluid changes. I change the coolant about every four years. Don't blame your lack of willingness to spend $25 on coolant and a few hours to change it on the product. Let's see...$25 vs $25K for a new car...no contest!!
@davelowets Жыл бұрын
It's orange, and it's called "Dexcool". If you purchase a car with this shit in it, do a coolant flush IMMEDIATELY and get it all out. Once your coolant system is flushed of all Dexcool, and is nothing but clean water, drain the system and refill with a good quality green coolant.

Normal for cracks to be between the valves. My timing chain broke about 6 years ago and it bent some valves in the head. That's when I discovered that mine had cracks. I didn't know it at the time. I’m gonna pull a Gen 3 3.1L out of my 99 Cutlass. It overheated really bad and it needs at least new rings and of course if all that’s being checked out it’s good to look at everything else in the engine for spec, including making sure the block has no cracks as well. It only has 70K so it’s less likely to have any bad issues minus the overheating risks. Should have done the wet compression test when I easily could have, knowing what I know now.

My mild custom 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue (forever car) may need a new crankshaft as it spun a rod bearing which apparently let loose with the low-viscosity OEM recommended oil after hitting passing gear it sloshed like water it seems and the bearing went dry. I changed oil to Synthetic and STP synthetic oil treatment which practically silenced the knock- 3800 Series II loves synthetic oil. But what would go into changing the bottom end crankshaft, I already bought new rod bearings, could a repair shop on a lift R/R a crankshaft without pulling the engine? All I can find on KZbin or online is changing a crankshaft sensor.

I have a 3800 series 2 in my brother’s firebird that I’m currently fixing with exactly those miles on it too. It had cooling issues, but so far I’ve noticed it was leaking from the water pump and water outlet due to a cheap and badly done overhaul before we parked it for a few years (at the current mileage). The engine looks solid and runs so smooth, too so hearing positive comments motivates me to give it more love. Before we parked it, the “overhaul” it got was really just replacing all gaskets and a few components like the timing chain etc.
