Thanks for your video and the link! My 85.5 NA fan had been rubbing at the end of the cooling and I tried to make stop but no luck. I ordered the fans from the rain forest and yesterday took the time to do it. For me taking it out, cutting out the old one was super easy. I added 4 more zip tie holes to each side, so there is now 16 zip ties holding the fans in. Putting it back in took the longest. Since the new fans do protrude a little more than the stock fans, the right side kept hitting the AC compressor pulley. If I woulda put my car on ramps it would have been easier, I only lifted the right side. Anyways, under the car I positioned the fan upside down (bottom of the plastic with the part number now on top), pulled the left side up (soon to be right, but avoiding the AC Compressor) then rotated it from left to right so the motor was above and beyond the AC compressor then put the actual left side in place. It took me under 4 hours, not really a hard job, just take it slow. I didn't want to break anything and thankfully the only thing broken was a plastic clip to hold part of the wires up (zip ties fixed that). Thanks again for your idea and video!

Excellent update and insights here for the rest of the community! Thank you for sharing so many details! And I'm really pleased that the video has helped! (And my original fan was also perilously close the cooling system, and it always made me nervous!)

Amazing video Gareth, especially on a topic that's not covered too much for our cars - the oem fans are so expensive. If mine ever goes I will definitely be referencing your video.
@GTArmstrong
@GTArmstrong Жыл бұрын
Thanks Seagrams! Yes - very expensive. In fact, I was on the search for just the shroud, thinking I could transplant the fans, and this was also through the roof expensive... It must be said though that these original fans are very impressive to have lasted this long. Outside of the expense though, tech has moved on and having seen how quickly the old fan stops after a spin, I'm willing to bet the updated fan is significantly more efficient than these older units.

Great video - new fans sounds quieter and seems to be more powerful.

Thanks Todd. Definitely quieter. I’m not sure about more powerful - but I’m very pleased the results.

I've had this same issue on my Porsche for the longest. I'm very keen to see how you fix the high speed mode.
@GTArmstrong
@GTArmstrong 3 ай бұрын
I didn’t actually need to fix it…during the video the high speed test was done incorrectly and that is why I got the result I did. So mine works really well at this point. BUT I’ve bought another and that one has had its wiring mangled - so there may be some testing and repairs needed there.

Thank you for this. Gonna drain the coolant system and refill / bleed this weekend. If it's still running hot I'll try this.

I’m glad it’s offered an additional option to you. I’m very, very pleased with it up to now and the fan is working perfectly. Just please note that during my test I got the high speed portion of it wrong so do what I didn’t do 😅

@@doubled334 very simple - just make sure that you have the correct fittings - the first one I reattached it - way before this video - I punctured my radiator. 😅

In the video you state you are attempting to trigger high speed by shorting terminals 2 and 1, but the pinout shown at 9:58 suggests you should have been shorting terminals 3 and 1.

Did you consider plastic welding to repair the original.
@GTArmstrong
@GTArmstrong Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian - yes I did, and the reason I didn't opt to do it was the amount of tension on the arm that broke - it was very surprising that I was unable to get it back into the original position (which I felt would be the strongest position if repaired this way). I don't know the strength of plastic welding either - and I have very little experience with it. It wasn't fun to cut those mounting arms off, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

Great video, and thank you! How is the clearance sliding the fans in between the radiator and the power steering pump and AC compressor? I have a slightly thicker aftermarket radiator and it’s very difficult to get the fans back in. If these are slimmer I may do this for both. Thanks!

Hi ch - I’m pleased it has been helpful. Clearance on my end has been good. I’m able to get my hand between the fan and the front shrouds with room to spare. Definitely lower profile than the originals. So slightly thicker shouldn’t be a problem 👍🏻 Looking forward to hearing how it goes - please keep us updated?

You can find some audi 100 aftermarket fans that you can mount without cutting the original mounts... For this kind of fan that you have mounted it is better to do a new shroud from metal some cutting bending and you can do it... My 944S2 behaves the same especially at traffic stops during hot sunny weather. The temp will creep up to the third mark & when the car is moving again, the temp will slowly move down to half again. Both original Porsche cooling fans used to be dead before & I replaced it with Chevrolet Cruise fans which is the nearest that could fit the compartment. Other mechanics kept telling me that the fans speed were not strong enough & I should opt for Porsche original fans which is double the price. And I’m definitely not in the right budget at the moment.. But my worst fear now is, how safe is it when the temp gauge creeps up to the third mark..? Will it eventually mess up the headgasket in long term..? That’s really my ultimate worst fear though. Need some advice here. Many thanks!
@GTArmstrong
@GTArmstrong Жыл бұрын
That third mark was definitely the limit for me - when I pulled off to the side of the road, it was between that mark and the top red - and caused me massive stress. No damage was done, fortunately. After installing this fan (specs pinned in the comments section here) it hasn’t reached the third mark and I’ve driven a lot. It’s working so well that when I stop at a traffic light, my temp drops. 1) Is your thermo fan switch activating at the correct temps? See: www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-01.htm 2) What happens when you bring the car up to temp in your driveway? …Do your fans activate? 3) Have you checked your cooling system for leaks? (Here was when I did mine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYWweomwiJeMl5o) Leaks cause air pockets which are bad news in the cooling system and need to be bled out asap. 4) And it may be a silly question but are you certain your current fans are pushing / pulling air the right direction? It seems really strange that you have two fans running but they don’t bring the temp down?
@Rendezvous512
@Rendezvous512 Жыл бұрын
@@GTArmstrong I'll definitely will get it addressed soon. It's rather ironic actually because when the temp hits the third mark, both fans are actually spinning.. It only happens during traffic stops on hot afternoon weather though. As soon as the car is moving again the temp would drastically drop to optimum level again. The faster I drive at the highways, the cooler it gets. Honestly I got a feeling that the fan motors are not that strong enough. Could be the capacity of the motors were not as powerful as the original ones. Because that's what the mechanics at my area had been telling me.. Sounds rather logical because both fans doesn't sound loud at all.. Anyways, will definitely get it sort out soon. Luckily it's not my daily driven car. I will only drive it during the evening where there is less heat outside & the temp will normally be in ideal mode. Thanks for the kind feedback mate. Appreciate it a lot! Cheers!

Our cars depend on the revs of the engine to drive the water pump and so it sounds like you may have a bit of a flow or pump issue if things are getting so hot when stopping at traffic lights etc? With regard to fans, CFM is the measurement used to determine how much air is being displaced or moved and perhaps your fans are on the lower end of the CFM spectrum so struggle without additional moving air? Please keep me updated - I’d love it if you got it sorted out and to know what it is that is causing this for you?
