Oh because I'm a dog trainer I run them extended periods of time to record sessions for families. Need the portability, stabilization and durability of action cameras when working with dogs, and I run higher extended frame rates when I may need to catch a moment and replay in slow motion to break down what happens situationally. I work year round outside for hour sessions at a time, so scorching summers at 90+ degrees, and during the winters as well. I saw you asked in the video and I know I'm a pretty niche use case, but that's why I super appreciate these reviews! Thanks again!

So which one you bought? DJI ACTION ?
@Rob_65 Жыл бұрын
I just bought the DJI Action 3 and just started playing with it. Whenever possible I want to use the protective frame and yes; I think this will impact cooling and make the camera shutdown quicker. With the protective frame, indoors and no fan to aid cooling the camera does stop recording after 27 minutes at 4k 16:9 60fps and 13 minutes at 120 fps. I measured the temperature of the camera with an IR thermometer and this reaches around 40°C. Even though this means the camera may shut down even here in the Netherlands on a very hot day I am happy with these results. I think there is a high chance that I will "shut down" before the camera does 😁

Your comment/question on why would you use 4k/60 or 120 for long periods of times....scuba diving. I turn it on, jump in and when I surface I will turn it off. Dives can last 30-50 minutes depending on depth. I currently use the Hero 7 and have zero issues with 4k60. The 4k120 is tempting as it would help with slowing down video for situation or improving quality with fast moving fish. I would think if I was staying above the 16m limit there would be no issue as it would be somewhat "watercooled", but in a dive case I'm not sure how it will do since the plastic and air inside won't transfer heat as well. I do like how you did test it in a practical situation, slight air movement and mounted. Wish they would get these early models in some divers hands too. Best review and heat test I have seen yet. Thank you!

Baseball and Softball games in the Southwest are real use case scenarios in which you are using 4k or 5.3k and 60 fps. Mount the camera to the backstop and then zoom and pan in post edit to get all the action. The problem is when the games run 90 to 120 minutes long and the temperature is over 100 degrees. Being able to handle the heat is a must. My own testing has the sunlight on the black body adding to the build up of heat, so even with a decent breeze it can still shut down. A Sun Shade and Raspberry Pi Heat Sinks have helped with a GoPro Hero 9 continue to run for most days and games. Glad to see they are looking into the issue and building solutions into the newer models. Thanks for the video.

ok, got it, GoPro=better dynamic range and stuff, but overheats faster than Action 3, GoPro still doesn't show in app mirror image WHILE recording. Buying the Action 2 was a coin of trust to DJI. Question: How can we return Action 2 to Dji and get a discount for an action 3 cause the Action 2 was a test made on the buyers who trusted them. The trust must go BOTH ways. For my use, GoPro will not be used (ever), until they solve the live in app stream, and DJI must keep up the good work but must gain back the buyers trust. Good to see Action 1 (the legend), back in a new coat :) I just love when DJI listens to his community. And you made another perfect video.

As a motovlogger, I have recorded for hours on end. This summer, I rode in 100+F temps for 45-65 minute stretches, for a total of 3 hours of riding. I was recording on a Hero 8, 9, and 10, all at 2.7k/30fps. None of them overheated - but we were moving at a good speed, which helped, as did the low framerate. A few weeks later, I was recording [static, the Hero 9 on a GoPro grip and the Hero 10 on a 4ft selfie stick] at 4k/max FPS [120/240] and both cameras overheated, and the Hero 10's battery actually swelled up inside the camera body and wouldn't come out - the cap popped off of it, and I had to wait a while for it to cool down before I could remove the battery. It was almost 100F that day too, and quite sunny. The cameras overheated in under 15 minutes of continuous recording. All that is to say that while it's not the typical use case, it's still something that's done on a regular basis, so I thank you for doing these tests to help me narrow down my next camera.

Ok, now you are right about running the action camera static 4k 60fps which is not what they are designed for. HOWEVER, I do the static 4k in real world as i put them in random places in a room or outside depending on what I'm shooting, as they are small and inconspicuous. As I film a wedding I like to add them for b roll, for places im not able to be around it as i might be filming say the speeches at a wedding and i want the gopro facing guests at various points in a room. Even during a Wedding service putting them at the back of the church, at the sides etc. I have also been filming a school play production and put the gopro on stage static, in the audience for reactions etc. So it is a great video using them statically for over heating.

I'd been using the 10 quite frequently for quick interviews in various temperature, direct sunlight to shaded environments. (w/media mods in all cases) Recently, I mounted one on a race car without the media mod and it sat for quite some time baking in the direct sunlight...temp around 80 degrees with ligh breeze. The camera inadvertently was activated twice for 15 minutes each while stationary.. Finally, the tired time it was started, the car began to roll out and 30 seconds later it overheated and shut down. Point being any indoor test in a mild temperature environment will not give a adequate test of overheating. These camera overheat when operated in an already heat induced environment.

Thanks for the video! I use my GP:H11 primarily as a dashcam currently (original projects I got it for on are hold XP), so overheating has been something I've been testing to find the ideal settings for it. The issue as a dashcam I'm finding at this time is that I'm having to pump hot air over it as running cool air would fog up my windows and freeze me to death in the winter XD So while it is getting airflow, I imagine it is adding to the problem rather than helping during the winter months. Current tests I've run are at the 5.3k 30fps setting in the cinematic preset. With this setting, it lasts about 32 minutes before thermal shutdown with the media mod pacl (unfortunately 10 minutes shorter than a my typical commute one way) and at least 50 minutes without the media mod (no trips yet longer than that). While I don't anticipate too much change to this, my next tests will be at 24 fps with the media mod and I might look into a battery powered fan or something to see if I can get a touch more life out of it. I expect the sweet spot will be a 4k setting for video quality and longevity, but it is something I will be playing around with over the next few weeks.

Since then I have had it overheat on the Tripod when in direct sunlight at around 30C (Australia) and again on the windscreen when driving and windows down. In saying this though each time I have had it running for 20 minutes or more.

To answer the question as to who runs their camera on continuously...that would be me. I try to run at 2.7k 60 as I am trying to record my son's baseball games. Of course, I am not looking to watch these games in their entirety after recording, but hoping to catch key moments. Now, baseball is played outside and often in hot sun, and my hero8 simply could not run for more than 5 to 10 minutes in 100 to 110 degree heat without shutting down. So, I started to use the h8 without a battery installed to help w cooling, and it did a tiny bit better, but still not enough useful footage as I would check in between innings to find the camera was not recording and was powered down. Mind you, I have a rig to mount to a fence in order to be as unobtrusive as possible, and do not want 2 hours of a fence, so holding the camera is not really an option. So I brought the hero7 in, and it performed pretty much the same. For this reason, I am hoping that the A3 is the ticket, but time will tell. Not to mention that the weather should be cooling down now that it is Fall. This weekend will be the test as it is supposed to be in the upper 90s.

Under what condition did these cameras tested on? Rather than overheating 4k60 after 60 minutes, I'm more interested to know how long until theyll overheat under the sun - which I believe most of us use actioncam for - when we go for sports/hiking/beach at noon.

Just found your video and really enjoyed it. I was looking thru the comments but didn't see this question already asked. Sorry if I missed it... Looking for a new camera for racing hare scrambles on dirt bikes. Current camera that my son uses is a Hero 7 Black and we have to use an external battery system. He uses a chin mount on his helmet that gets heavy during a 2 hour race. He uses 1080P with stabilization on. Have you tested how long these cameras will last in that setting? Would love to know which one you would recommend in this scenario. Thanks in advance...

I stick my cameras on the bow of my kayak during 2-3 hour kayak races, and I usually shoot 4K/60 to get all the smooth action.

I've gone on a few bike trails with the Osmo Action 3! Not once did it overheat! I'm surely getting my money's worth on the Osmo Action 3!

'you should use a different camera'. Sure, but not everyone can just swap out to a larger camera at the tail end of a day or afternoon mtbing or snowboarding. Or just going into some woods on a cloudy day in the winter for those of us who live in less equatorial latitudes! 🙂 That's why people ask about low light performance. Yes a camera with larger sensor would obviously do better but that comes with bulk, size and other properties that limit use in the scenarios action cameras are designed for. Low, or even just not super sunny, light is important. Is your full review look looking at the other colour modes? I.e. flat vs d-cinelike. Would be really interesting to see that comparison regarding the dynamic range potential of both cameras.

Can you do a comparison of the GoPro 11 vs the x3 in single Lens mode.

I bought both :) DJI should say thank you to you for your test. FWIW, I run my action cameras as bodycams on chesty harness or headband all the time. 60 fps is useful for getting screengrabs later (and 120 fps can make for even sharper frame grabs), so there goes your friend Brandon's theory. Sorry (not sorry) I'm not using action cameras "as intended" (whoever decided how action cameras *should* be used?). Thanks for another great video.

hi and thanks for your video! What kind and class of micro SD memory card did you use in gopro 11 to be able to record 4k so long no stop?

Cold is our problem in Canada well skiing. My second GoPro an 8 is worse then my original a 4 for battery life. Sometimes a couple of minutes is all I get. Taking the battery right out and then back in will restart it but again only for a few minutes. A real pain and a disappointment . Is there any tests out there for cold operation times?

which production date had this DJI Osmo Action, because I bought last week an oa3 and overheats in 9 minutes on the dashboard in my car ? in 4k/60. in my opinion that is really fast. Maybe it is useless on vacation because it will be warmer there.

I’m glad somebody made this comparison. I was literally standing at Best Buy today, about to buy the GoPro 11, but I found some consumer reviews about overheating problems on it. In my experience, I bought the GoPro hero 3 and the GoPro hero 5 as soon as they came out, and both of them had a lot of issues with freezing until the firmware updates. I like the quality of the hero 11 more than the DJI, but I may wait a bit before picking up a new action camera. 🥶

Hi David, hope you'd be able to do a comparo of GP11 and Insta X3 - the Gopro new sensor size and features like fixed horizon, and Insta360 usability improvements and features - make them perform very similar tasks for content providers. Would like to see your take on that. Cheers!

nice video. but my problem is more the cold. i´m a mountaineer and the biggest problem on higher mountains are the cold temps. mixed up with wind. So a coldness test would be awesome. i know its about the battery. but maybe they thought about coldness too.

We did! The new Enduro Battery is included with your HERO11, it provides significantly longer runtimes and dramatically improved cold-weather performance when compared to standard GoPro batteries. 👍

Awesome video! I use a GoPro Hero 7 Black to record fishing videos. I record the entire trip and edit the footage later. I use a power bank instead of the battery that it comes with. I am able to shoot continuous video from 3 to 5 hours straight at 4k 60fps. In direct sunlight at outdoor temps around 90 degrees it will overheat after a few hours every now and then, but if i have my bimini top up on the boat for some shade it will record the whole time with no issues. Most folks i know that record fishing videos for youtube record this way. so you dont miss any action. You got me wanting to buy this Action 3 now! Sounds like the perfect camera for recording long hot days on the river!
