I stumbled across Bobby standing in the beer line in Flint, MI all by himself back in the early 90’s. It was an Overkill headline show at the Capital Theatre and nobody recognized him. I did and he was an immediate friend. Probably just surprised someone recognized him. We talked for a good 15 minutes as he waited to get beverages. My friend told him how I’m a huge Overkill fan and my band (I’m a guitar player) plays Overkill. When we parted ways he said “Good luck with your band.” I said “Good luck with yours too.” He just laughed and walked away. Great memory.

True story. A bit long but worth it... Got to open for these guys in Cumberland, MD in the late 90s. I was in a cover band called, Majyk Salt, and Overkill was pretty much out of arenas at that time and just doing a lot of large to mid-size clubs. I'd much rather see bands in an intimate setting like that instead of arenas. You don't get all the pyro and light shows, which I really don't give a crap about anyway because I'm just there for the jams, and it's just so much more up close and personal. In a mismatch for the ages, Molly Hatchet also played that night, but the Jersey boys were the headliners, which I thought was just as it should be in an ordered universe. I used to learn some Hatchet back when I was starting out on guitar, because the tunes were pretty simple and the leads went on forever LOL. I think there were only two original members left, and I got the distinct impression they had a case of the ass at having to open for what they likely considered an inferior band, although it didn't take a musical genius to tell that the exact opposite was clearly the case. What was also funny was that we played to the furniture (didn't care--got paid anyway), and there weren't more than 20 people there throughout most of Hatchet's set. An ordered universe and all of that. And when their set was almost over (no encore for 20 snoozing people, yuk yuk), the hellrats and rivetheads started to pack the place. Prolly drove Hatchet nuts. Laughed my ass off. Hell, even Hatchet's roadies were prix. They were already set up when I got there. I just had a small rack by then, and I went onto the stage and set it on another rack that was already there. Some guy storms over, gets in my face, and yells, git yer f**kin' junk off my equipment. It took a lot of restraint on my part, but I assume he still had his teeth when they left in a huff, to the sound of crickets. I didn''t wanna bust my hands up anyway. Then they pissed around and took their time tearing down and chugging free beer. Overkill still had to set up, so they ended up having to go on late. Now, I assume everyone here has had the electrifying Overkill live experience, so I don't need to say much about that. They only had a few roadies, and after their set the band actually helped tear down. So my bassist (who was just thunderstruck by the kinetic energy of Verni) and I went up and helped. When their truck was loaded, we went back inside with Blitz and Marino, and just kicked back and BSed for a little while. And I swear to Shiva, Marino even let me play one of his Vs. The thing about us guitarists, we can't bear the thought of our six-string goddesses bouncing around in some truck, so we transport them ourselves thankya very much. Coolest guys you could ever meet, though. I told the story about the @$$hole Hatchet roadie. Blitz just rolled his eyes, but as a true professional, didn't comment. We talked about everything from band struggles, to UFOs, to the steady decline of the mob in north Jersey, and how it's the end of an era. Anyway, that's the story. I was deeply saddened to hear of Marino's passing.

I wish. Unfortunately 99% of their material between Horrorscope and Ironbound gets ignored live, which sucks because I’d rather hear Black Line, Undying, The Wait, Genocya, Struck Down, or Death Comes Out To Play live over hearing Rotten To The Core, Hello From The Gutter or Elimination for the hundredth time.

Not to be contradictory in any way but Overkill pre-dates Pantera by quite a bit...give their old stuff a listen and it won't disappoint...I've been a huge fan since the early 80's and they kick ass to this day. They belong right up there with Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and others. Great band that never got their due. I'm right there with Eddie Trunk in that they should've been a lot bigger. It's just nice that they're still at it.

I'm trying to figure out how I can get a hi-res copy the picture you use at the beginning of this video? I can't tell if it was taken from an unusual angle, or if it's a version of the album cover that has been manipulated somehow? Either way, I'd love to get a copy of it!
