holy shit!!! this is amazing to see get found!! i've listened to the rotted version so many times now and i always wondered if this would ever get found in HQ. it seemed unlikely considering just how obscure this was, but life seems to bring a lot of pleasant surprises. so glad this can finally be archived and listened to as it was originally intended :D

Thanks for uploading, and for your interest in the album. I've enjoyed revisiting Traces of Yesterdays after so many years! Dave (the piano player)

Hi Dave! Is it alright to enable downloads on Soundcloud? I spoke with Alex on Instagram and he’s OK with it. Cheers!

was it surreal hearing the songs when effected by disc rot? it sounded like a broadcast from a million miles away that, in the time it takes to reach earth, may be long dead
@DavidTollerton-e6h3 ай бұрын
@@ciarrid2146 It was just surreal hearing the songs in any form. I'd not really thought about them in 20 years! But, yeah, the disk rot did make them sound like some distant and distorted broadcast.

I am actually tweaking rn, the whole album has finally been found after a decade, 2020 me probably would never have thought that this day would come. Going to make my own little copy of this when I come home from a trip. Genuinely a little emotional, holy shit.

I would like to clarify one thing, the "demos" that Andrew put on Soundcloud a while ago are *not* Overland. They're a previous band that Alex and I were both in, Dave and Jane were not. We never really had a name, but Alex had a big polystyrene M that he wanted to use as stage dressing for gigs. So we were gonna be called Mephisto, but it turned out there was another band with that name.
@DavidTollerton-e6h3 ай бұрын
It gets more confusing. Before the band you mention, Alex and I were in another band called 'Malin' when we were aged 15 or so. I have a vague memory that the big M might have been from that. Other members of Malin were Will and Drew, and we were noisy. 'Malin' comes from the Radio 4 shipping forecast (and the lyrics to Blur's 'This Is A Low').

this is awesome, are there any pictures of the band?
@joetiltman93713 ай бұрын
Hello, we didn't ever take any photos as a band, we never did any promo or played a gig. We practiced about a dozen times in Jane's house (she's the singer and violin player), then recorded the album. Dave put a photo of me and him from a few weeks ago on his Instagram. Prior to that I hadn't seen him for 10 years, that was at our friend Rachel's wedding. The same Rachel whose cd copy miraculously survived and that I ripped a couple of weeks ago.

@@joetiltman9371 wait is this rachel the one from movietone by any chance? i know they’re from bristol aswell i remember hearing your song “we scatter to the corners” and immediately thinking this is something movietone would’ve done on their headfall side project. this is some beautiful post-rock by the way, gorgeous !

Haven't heard this for years, think I like it better than in 2002. Tried playing my CDR in 2008 and it resolutely refused to play ball. I wonder what was special about Rachel's copy?
@Profoundemonium4 ай бұрын
I think it's the glue in the adhesive label that ate through the data layer. Maybe Rachel's copy didn't have one? Or a different disc brand? Either way I'm glad it's found a new audience in 2024!

Were these files ripped directly from the Soundcloud upload, or were you sent the same files from the CD source? Will you be uploading them onto the Internet Archive as well?
