What I love about this build is the unapologetic use of budget components and gear to get a functional rig out there for minimum bucks. Some of these things will let you down at some point or other, but the many hours you spend outside and the spare change you have to enjoy it make it a net win for sure. It feels good to see something like this. The flashy rigs with every tacticool mod in the known universe are nice to check out and nice to use of course. But the majority of folks would be well served with sort of rig.
@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
For sure! I agree! Spend the money on certain mods where the higher quality makes sense but everything doesn’t probably have to be at that level. Of course it is nice! But not a necessity, especially if you are trying to build a cool looking rig too

@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
I would say that stock the vehicle has some rake and since the old man emu lift is 3" all around I think it maintains factory rake. It would be level if I did more of a 2" lift in the rear. I think the heavy springs is a must for bumper, winch, and extra lights in the front. It would just make the rake worse.

Have you ever had to use craw control? Or do you think A-Trac is good enough for most everything?
@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I guess most of the time I just use 4low if anything gets dicey. Mud terrains help a lot with traction. A-trac and the Diff are both helpful. I think crawl control is probably best in sand but I have hardly driven on sand. I am only used the rear diff a few times but it works like magic. Atrac typically would be enough for most the stuff I do...why do you ask?
@erickdiaz61522 жыл бұрын
@@OverlandEngineer I'm debating on getting an SR5 premium or a TRD Offroad. I like the creature comforts of SR5 Premium (and it's cheaper). But the SR5s don't have the MTS/crawl control. And I feel like a locker could always be installed later if I feel like I need it, which is why the locker is not a factor in my decision right now
@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
@@erickdiaz6152 Ah I see. Well my experience has been everyone throws it in 4Wheel drive, then if that does not work turn on all the toyota offroad things haha, then if that does not work use crawl control or locker depending on situation. A trac helps to better deliver power to all tires or rather the tires that are not spinning. It probably helps but a locker would be much better. I know that was not part of your decision but that would be my take. Honestly I think a more important decision would be whether you plan to regear or not. If you want to regear to run 34-35" tires then I think the SR5 is the no brainer because you are waffling on whether you need a locker. If you plan to regear then a locker could always come. Getting a 4Runner for 33s where you really don't need to regear and then all of a sudden deciding you are spending $2.5k to basically install a locker. Probably not worth going with the SR5. So to sum it up - gears or no gears? If gears, skip the locker because A trac is whatever compared to 4WD. If no gears, get the Offroad premium - you will be happier with a factory e locker over air locker. This is coming from a guy that does not turn on A trac much with a TRD Pro haha.

So I'm a noob, what's the advantage of yellow/amber lights for off-roading? Is it a snow thing? we don't get much more than 1-2inches a year where I live in Mississippi so would I still want amber over white? Great looking rig man.

No problem! Just in general the light performs better if you are concerned something while driving might reflect the light. That’s all. It’s still even personal preference. A lot of people also prefer yellow/amber in fog, rain and dust over white light. White light is just especially reflective on snow. I also really like it because I like the mix of yellow LED and white LED on back roads at night. Easier on the eyes, not as harsh of a reflection, and way way brighter than halogens. Hope that helps!

Your rig is beautiful, and it's tastefully built. But as someone who balls on a budget and rocks a '15 SR5, it's frustrating to see "value" in the title and open the video to see a TRD Pro, a $1000 C4 bumper, AlphaRex Pro headlights, and a... $400 fridge... in a best-value build? Title is completely off, but hey, at least your rig is gorgeous. Hope you actually off-road it the way it's meant to be now and show us some good content with all these sweet goodies put to use.
@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have had a few people message me about that. Part of the reason it was titled that way was to help it just actually get recommended to overland viewers and this video has actually done well. But in all transparency I bought my bumper on black friday, my suspension is the $1k old man emu system, my first set of 33s were off Facebook for $200 with like 20% tread left, my sliders were used off facebook, the fridge is way cheaper than dometic, the alpharex pros are the cheap model that I did my own led swap on, and I paid less for my 100k miles 2015 TRD Pro than SR5 premiums of same mileage in Winter 2020 before the COVID car crisis. So in my mind I felt it really was a best value build. It still is a little bit of a stretch but in the description I put that a 5th gen was part of my criteria when starting the build...I may still be stretching it a bit though. Thanks for your support though, a clean build was my goal and it has been fun making content with it!

It just depends on what sort of look you want. With a zero offset your tire will probably not poke out at all. -38mm is common and greater than a 1.25" spacers. It requires quite a bit to fit them. Rock light benefit: you can see who’s hiding under your truck with a machete

LOL, I do love them at camp for seeing around and spotting people hiding under my truck haha.

I love this setup, but in terms of value this is kind of ridiculous. If you want something relatively new, a Pathfinder or Xterra can be had and built for like literally half the starting price of this. You don't need to be able to throw down $30 or 40k to go overland, I'm kind of just sick of all these channels calling these extreme luxury items "best value", it can be especially disheartening for people who want to enter into Overlanding to open youtube and see the highest viewed videos talking about the best value out there is something like this.
@OverlandEngineer2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean but I paid much less than 30k for my vehicle. Plus I mentioned in the description I was starting with a 5th Gen 4Runner as a criteria. The sooner people realize KZbin doesn’t promote content at all without slightly exaggerated titles the more people will understand why KZbin channels are the way they are. I do that so that people can see all my other videos because walk around videos get the most views. I don’t like it either but if my videos get less than 50 views then almost no one new sees my videos who might really benefit. It is what it is I guess.

Harbor Freight, Smittybilt, Amazon off brands,etc are not extreme luxury. Dude, chill out a bit. Also cars are all super expensive right now and sometime in the future prices will normalize again.

@@RubiconV sorry dude but you are totally naive if you think anyone but a very small percentage of the population can afford to build a rig like this for this kind of purpose. all I'm saying is have some perspective. You throw a couple of grand at a hobby like photography, sports, mountain biking, kayaking, etc....and you're doing pretty great, then compare what a couple of grand gets you in overlanding, hardly anything on top of already needing a relatively expensive vehicle....

@@pizzasaurolophus What is your point? There are people starving in this world and slavery still exists in the middle east. Some people can't afford a computer or phone to watch youtube. Should people not make videos anymore? LOL

@@RubiconV ...go back and read the first comment again? There are people out there overlanding in XJs or or stock pickup trucks that are worth a few thousand dollars and they do great. It can suck as someone trying to get into the hobby and only seeing Wranglers and 4Runners with a ton of mods being descibed as the best value out there. I totally get where the uploader is coming from though, and I think it's a great build, it's just as the example I gave earlier you could buy an Xterra, put a lift, 33s, RTT and a slew of other mods for literally half the price.

I’m sorry but that’s a laughable statement. I love Jeeps but there is no way that’s a vehicle anyone should start with over a 4Runner for capability
