After reaching Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway last week, we are officially on one of the greatest roads in the world. But we guess that beauty doesn't come without a cost. The road leads us past towering mountains, hot springs, herds of bison and our first bear! But the Spring snowmelt and gravel roads spell disaster again for our windscreen. But this time, it's not the answer we wanted.

↠ A BIT ABOUT US
We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we'll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina!

Beautiful!! Thanks for another awesome video. It was perfect, the scenery, your lasagna, you're narrative is exceptional that you should write a book if you haven't already, the music, the animals, your heel clicking, lol. It was nice to see you out enjoying yourselves having a few drinks. Thanks for taking us on this incredible adventure with you. Stay safe and enjoy, from Nova Scotia! 😊❤

My family in Alberta buy their cars with stone chips already in their windshields!!! If it's a new car, they have a chip within the week!! They very rarely get them fixed and if they do, there's a repair tent on every corner in Calgary! Hope you get to experience the Northern Lights! Glad you're seeing all of the wildlife!

Hahah love this 😆 Honestly all the Canadians in the comments have really put our mind at ease. Sounds like it's just part of the Northern Canadian experience! We've been keeping an eye out for the northern lights but haven't had much luck with cloud cover. We remain optimistic though, despite the longer and longer days 🙈 💛

Seriously don't worry about the windscreen ("windshield" in Canada), this is really just a typical Canadian experience. The stone chips can be repaired for $30-50 or you can get a DIY kit for much less. The thing to know is that the cold will cause the chip to turn into one or more cracks with the temperature change. Rural people will get some chips all summer and then repair them before the temperature drops in the fall. Unless you have a lot of spiderweb cracks all through it, you've no real worry. Start noticing local people's windscreens and you'll see it's not uncommon to leave it a while.
@OverlandingSophia

Really appreciate this Brent, you and other Canadians in the comments have really put our minds at ease. And also seeing all the other cracked windshields in Whitehorse has helped! 😂 We have two repair kits with us so we can always use that. In the meantime, we'll do as the Canadians do and keep on trucking 😃

Compliments on "the art of the drone." You deploy it with great effectiveness. Trailing the van whilst underway as well as you do is quite impressive. Urge you again to give The Cremation of Sam McGee a quick read. Not Shakespearian, but good fun and speaks to the Yukon. Safe travels!

Having a crack in your windscreen is so normal here - we drive with them for years because as soon as you replace it you’ll get a rock - as you discovered. It’s a badge of honour. By the way where do you keep all your winter clothes in the van? I love seeing all the places I’ve heard about all the years I’ve lived here, such as Whitehorse

Haha love this. Honestly everyone has made us realise how normal this is and we think we've probably been over-reacting to them 😂 Can't do the Alaska Highway without a cracked windscreen, can we?! We store our winter clothes in our cupboards, our coats we hang on the front seats when we're inside the van. Can't tell you how excited we are to get the summer clothes out though! 🌞

Hey you 4 ! Fantastic video. No words to describe the vastness and the beauty of the landscape as you drive along. Even on a small screen. The hot springs looked so inviting and in all of that muted color to see the blue warm water was perfect. I loved seeing the rather ratty looking coats on the bison and their long loping strides seeming to know that they need not hurry for anyone. What relatively small feet , one might think that they'd topple over considering the length between footsteps. And to see the bear's beautiful coat after hibernation, almost silky. Hard to grasp the size of the signpost forest ! Loved it ! Ben and Chesca , you two are adorable and fun and I'm so glad you are continuing your grand adventures and generously sharing so much of yourselves with us. Sending oxox's to you and scratches behind the ears for the boys. Wishing you safe travels and more wonders as the miles go by.❣

So glad you felt the magic of this week too Ellen! The hot springs were a DREAM. After all the dreary snow and cold, to soak in crystal blue waters was life-affirming! 😂 Hahah know exactly what you mean about the bison feet! They're so dainty compared to their huge bodies. I said to Ben they look like they skipped leg day at the gym. Hope all is good with you and you're fully enjoying the warmth and colour of Spring over on the east coast. Yes, amazing scenery, loved your camera shots and the music. I'm making notes of places to see the next time I get up there. There's just so much to do when you are traveling this route. Baby bison, baby foxes....too cute! I think River would have liked some of that Poutine, she was giving it the eye. Was that your "mini pub crawl"? A KZbin that recently started by new van dweller, James, in the UK, is By The Curb, you'd enjoy it. James and his girlfriend Helen do pub crawls as well as hiking and other things and they are so funny. I hope your windshield hangs on for a bit longer. I live just outside of Dawson City, and you can see why I do - the wilderness, and the scenery. We treat distances differently up here though. When I last drove south on holiday, I went from Whitehorse, to Toad River in a single day, and then Chetwynd the next day. I have gone Dawson-Whitehorse, and back in a single day, and lots of people up here do that. I HIGHLY recommend a trip up the Dempster. It is one of the great drives of the world. And, it is all gravel, so your window WILL get chipped! That is a normal thing up here. :)

Love your response to the grandeur of the Canadian wilderness. Glad you got to see the bison near Watson Lake and a bear too. My husband and brother-in-law drove all the way from Nova Scotia to Whitehorse a few years ago and saw the bison as well. Whitehorse is a cool city with lots to see and do. Sorry you will miss Dawson City --the home of the Klondike Gold Rush. We will be there this August before we drive the Dempster Highway all the way to the Arctic Ocean at Tuk. As for your windscreen -- par for the course unfortunately. The Yukon is special to us because our two daughters live in Whitehorse. You need more time to explore this vast territory!

Thanks Cathy, feel like each week the scenery just gets more intense and more majestic! Absolutely loved Whitehorse, we'll be back this way for a little while on our way south so hoping to see a little more then as the weather should have warmed up enough to get out and explore off the main highway a little. Would have loved the chance to go to Dawson City.. might have to save that for our big Canadian road trip one day 💕

@@OverlandingSophia You will have to stretch over to the passenger side of the windscreen where the windscreen is most likely to be hit. Good luck not careening off the highway while you are doing that, ha, ha! It's pea gravel season on the Alaska Highway. All the pea gravel laid down on the ice in the winter is awaiting vanlifers windshields to molest. There is no way to stop it. Nobody in Yukon or Alaska replaces their windscreen at this time of the year. The cracks and chips will add character to your windscreen. Unless a huge rock goes right through your windscreen so the rain can get in there's nothing to worry about.

As one of those truck drivers you meet on the highway, our windshields get smashed regularly, too. Not much you can do. The main hazard is your glass in your eyes- good idea to wear safety glasses or shades when running up North. The worst time of year is now because the all gravel from winter hasn’t been cleaned up /blown off the road yet.

Crossing the Australian outback the “roadtrains” (massively long transport trucks) would fling rocks … we would slow down and using both hands of passenger and one hand of driver we would brace against the windshield … not 100% but did stabilize the windshield enough that we never got more than a tiny chip … worth a try! Loving your trip!

Wow, absolutely beautiful. You have been so lucky to see Bison, bear and foxes in the wild. What an adventure. It's amazing how the laws work in different country's, because in Australia, putting a sticker on any sign post is considered graffiti and you would be fined. Our motto is leave nothing behind when travelling. Safe travels😊

We feel so lucky, especially to see them all so close together! It was like a wildlife bonanza! Ah we personally love the stickers on sign posts. You aren't defacing nature in any way, and I just look at them all wondering what incredible adventures are behind each one. But also got to hand to to Australia for maintaining respect for things like that too 💛

I'll bet on at least one crack or chip every 200 miles or so. Hope I'm wrong but with the shape on the front of the van it'll just funnel them all into it. Might see if you can find rock guard for the hood that will fit on it. Wouldn't stop them all but can help hood from taking damage and slow up some of the others before they hit the glass which might save a replacement before you get back from up there.

Hey Guys, bit late today, just got back from my weekend away making Videos for my new channel! That’s a nice stopover to begin with! The scenery gets better and better doesn’t it? Muncho lake has a great view! The snowy weather is picturesque. Hot Springs, now that’s a good idea! Agree with the dairy milk being the best and happy that Ben feels like a new woman too 😂.. Bison 🦬 look so majestic! Ooh, I love lasagna, if only there was smell o vision! I remember the signpost forest from other KZbinrs, and it’s amazing!! Oh wow! Chips cheese and Gravy! I need so quickly drive over and have some 😂😂. I think you’ll definitely have another couple of stone chips by the time you’ll get back. It’s unfortunately inevitable for the area I think but I’m happy it wasn’t like the last one! Cracking visit to the Yukon then. Ah the fox 🦊 family are so cool! glass shops have a repair that will fill the hole with some kind of goo ,so the crack does not expand you can also buy it in Canadian tire or auto parts stores
@OverlandingSophia
@OverlandingSophia Жыл бұрын
We do have a repair kit but because of how the crack had formed inside the glass, the resin wouldn’t have done anything. The glass technician had Sophia in their workshop and was going to drill the ends of the crack to stop it spreading, but again, couldn’t do anything because of where it’s placed. Bloody typical 😅

The further north you go the more often you feel like you’re the only people left on the planet. On 5e Dempster I appreciated the warnings posted about bears around campgrounds but I became convinced that the landscape was actually more dangerous than the wildlife. I knew that if I wandered from the road even a little bit in any direction I’d be a goner……I imagine that’s how Tombstone got it’s name….the beaten path was where we stayed!! I❤️ the north and the eccentrics that live there.
