Good video, well thought out pros and cons. I sat in a 250 at my local Toyota dealer, sitting in it gives off strong FJ Cruiser vibes, very squared styling, but with much better seats. My FJ has the hard plastic armrest on the door too, so i bought a stick on foam pad from Bunnings.

A well considered and balanced review. As for the price of the Altitude, I got quoted from two different dealerships, just under $102K drive-away (no more to pay) in Ningaloo Blue (NSW). Add about $800 for the towing kit and trailer wiring harness option if I wanted it. IMO, the price you quoted of $107K drive-away is a little on the expensive side. And I agree with you that the Prado is not good value for money. Second hard prices for the 300 Series GR Sport are continually coming down. I'm seriously considering a 2nd-hard of that instead of a new Prado Altitude.

@@fatmanoverlanding hello thank you for the comment. Yes I agree my figures seem wrong. I did check the Toyota website and the fine print said excluding taxes, but it must actually include the LCT in the drive away price. My '05 1HD78 series troopy with the 1HDFTE 4.2 factory turbo cost me 30 000K eight years ago. It has done 300 000km, has towed a caravan around Australia, gets 10km/L with normal highway driving, and the oil doesn't even get dirty between changes. No issues whatsoever. Only problem is, it isn't the comfiest vehicle on the road. The question is, will this vehicle have the same sort of longevity? For that amount of money, I would expect it to.

Great Review. Agree overall with what you are saying. I have the 250 VX model. Love the drive and feel of this rig off and on road. Very comfortable and Feels like your typical solid Toyota. The interior layout and comfort level is next level. Love the look too. Every bloody new car is stupidly expensive in today’s world. But I would rather be driving in the Toyota than just about anything else. The new technology with emissions and safety is mandated on all vehicles so I think they’ve done a pretty good job working that into the new Prado. The back cargo area is a bit of a sh1t show, but I’ll sort that out in time. Not a deal breaker. Cheers legends 😎

Glad you are enjoying it! That said Toyota had 15 years to get it right and the poor rear cargo area design is atrocious. On the Adblue, there will be after market shops that will disable the sensors for you, it adds nothing to performance and just costs you coin. Competition from new brands will push Toyota to improve their vehicles.

Altitude is 100k including the luxury car tax. In some states itll get up to 102 and while other states are 99k. I think the prado is inflated due to inflation but toyota have given you feature inclusions you did not get per model. Look at the inclusions in your GX thats almost not seen before in a toyota at a base model. And the 300 gx would feel like youre just spending money on engine and thats it as youre not getting any creature comfort or tech for more money.

That's a great review. Thanks. I tend to hang back a bit when a new model comes out. It's only fair to expect there may be some initial bugs and the measure for me is how the manufacturer deals with the fix(es) and their customers. A bolt drops out of a Prado suspension (Lil & Jake) collapsing the front passenger side with potentially catastrophic outcomes had it had happened at speed. Your opinion ... "You should expect teething problems with new vehicle models." My opinion ... Bolts have been widely used since the 15th century, so there's nothing new here. I suspect this either happened due to poor engineering design, the result of cost cutting, or a QA failure during production. Then again, opinions are like a$$holes. Everybody has one.

Interesting, I am a big Toyota fan having owned a 76 Toyota Celica, 86 Toyota Supra and still have a 1989 Toyota Supra. But have never owned a 4x4 of any kind Recently I came in the market for a 4.5lt diesel 200 series Landcruiser and was hoping I could get decent one for under $60k only to find there is nearly nothing with under 200km on the clock. I see dealers call these with 210k on the clock low km???? I have upped my budget to $70k and with that I can see a few with only around 150k km on the clock so that is effectively paying $10k more for 50k less on the clock. If the current resale holds I think it is worth it given I am less likely to have issues that come up with more mileage/KM But $80k for a brand new Toyota 4x4 with warranty drive away price, which is only about $5k more if I buy used $70k Landcrusier with 150k on the clock and pay $5k stamp duty??? If not for that 750mm water crossing issue I'd be seriously considering it, even in city driving you can come across situation that maybe an issue. Are you tuned in Toyota? should be not that hard a fix

A big part of your argument was based on LCT being on top of the drive away price but thats already built into the drive away cost so for your altitude example you literally added $7k which is pretty significant. pretty basic stuff here guys.

@OverlandTravellers 8 күн бұрын
@BACK2BOOGIN yeah I was wrong there. I did read the fine print and it says it doesn’t include tax so I based it off that. But the point still stands. Just over 100 for that car is a lot considering you could get a GX and modify it with the leftover and it would be far more capable and still have the same engine and driveline.

@ I agree the price seems pretty wild for the 250’s and pretty much every other car these days. Depending on needs 300 gx is a great option for sure but I think why the 250 Has been popular is for say 93k you can get a vx, lots of good finishes and tech and if you don’t need all that extra power and tow capability your sitting pretty compared to say a 300 gxl or Sahara

Many new 4WDs on market have adaptive cruise control - that’s not unique to the Prado. The shape reminds me of the MQ Patrol - it’s a box, but all manufacturers are going that way these days. As they say, never buy the first of a series - I just thought Toyota could have been consistent and done a better production. The issue of water wading depth breaking the 48V system is a deal breaker for me. Looking elsewhere.

Thanks mate.i am going off my invoice but I haven’t taken delivery of the car yet and it may change. We will see. Just one other comment I’d like to make. When I decided on the altitude it was because I only wanted a 5 seater. I know it’s expensive but when I bought my 200 series I bought the GX and then spent $50000 on it to make it more comfortable and capable. So this time I just went for the top spec with everything on it. I’m not going to modify this one just drive it as it is. Keep up the good videos. I enjoy them.

Made the mistake of reading comments early on. Most completely misinterpret what you are saying about the car. Interestingly the guys at 4x4 24/7 just reviewed it against its main competitors and albeit reluctantly, did gave it best value overall. Totally agree that that’s when talking about the GX spec- which full disclosure I have and am really happy with so far. But you are never going to keep everyone happy and time will tell re reliability. I am definitely nervous/aware of water and the 48v system, but hoping it was one of those freak occurrences. Thanks for the honest review. Will continue to watch the build. Think I might copy what you have done with tyres as don’t have the extra cash for wheels at the moment. It does blow my mind how many Everest die hards take the time to watch these videos… or just comment based on the title.

Great insight, guys, but Toyota tax is too much for me on this one. I've had a few, but this is slightly off the mark. You bought the correct one, though, but boy, for that sort of money, she's pretty sparce inside. Funny pro for adaptive cruise control, I have 3 cars with it at the moment, oldest being 2017. It's been around for ages, and works great in most cars, even way cheaper. Agree with other pros after test drive. Cons, too expensive, Ad blue, unfortunately that's the way it's going though. The biggest misses are the smaller fuel tank for range, and rear boot space, depending on configuration, and the useless 24V system to add weight & complexity. Still not powerful enough imo, and a big NO for towing with GVM, power, & and ad blue. I think for some consumers, it's fine, but not the masses it used to appeal to. I think an Everest ticks more boxes, for more people, including me.
