How do you add a post to the top of a roof like the illustration? 4 hole plate with riser attached?

Hi Richard, the short answer is yes, we have used a 4 hole plate with a short post welded on to it attached to the rafter beams. The longer answer is your want to be extremely careful with roof attachments. Any mistakes could result in a leaky roof, or worse! We generally try to avoid them as rule, but if we do one, we try to get a roofer involved to make sure things go smoothly.

@@SHAZEEBOShadeSails Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at the Skylift systems for hard roof installs to the double top plate. The idea I have is to install 2 risers above a flat pitch porch roof to extend the usable area. Thanks for the confirmation on the process!

Hi Richard, I've looked at those Skylift systems too. One thing to note is that shade sails like ours (ones with stainless steel cable in the perimeter) are meant to be pulled very tight and at rest can pull about 200 lbs of pressure. In a storm that can go up to 2,000 lbs of pressure! From what I understand, products like the Skylift are designed for a vertical pressure support, but the shade sails pull that pressure horizontaly. The post that we weld onto our plates is a 4"x4" steel post with at least .188" thickness. If you have any concerns, we recommend that you get an engineer involved.
