Ironically the anime cuts a lot of extra info for instance ainz isn't isekaid from a normal scifi world, he's taken from a post apocalyptic dystopian cyberpunk world, where he stepped over street orphan corpses on a daily basis, ate nutrient paste, only got an elementary school level education at twelve (Normal for people like him), watched his mother drop dead from overwork, had never seen plants or stars due to the sheer destruction of the environment and to top it off the mega corps had replaced the governments as the main governing bodies.

Ains Ool Gown, formerly the Goal of Nines, as a guild was placed in the seventh tier and remained in the tenth after Momonga was the only one running it. It was not the best guild around, but it was one of the best. TouchMe though? he was the best player in the game. That armor Momonga is using was a world item, the whole armor, the armor of the perfect warrior and it was a unique item that could only be acquired once in a pvp tournament event. TouchMe managed to create a broken build that coincidentally, with that armor made him even more broken. But strength was not everything in Yggdrasil, knowledge was actually more valuable, along with data grinding and resource management.

@@gantzllat A few things you got wrong: The clan that preceded Ainz Ooal Gown was Nine's Own Goal. Touch Me's armor is not a World Item, it is called World Champion Armor, and it is slightly weaker than a World Item. It was made for him by the devs at his request, because everyone who becomes a World Champion, of which there can only be nine at a time, gets one item made just for them. I'm fairly sure it can't even be looted. This part isn't something you got wrong, but is more of just a fun bonus: Ainz Ooal Gown wasn't the strongest guild, but it has the best defenses of any of them. No one guild could defeat them, even if none of the Guild Members took part in the defense.

Heck the NPCs of Nazarick show full sentience and outside traits controlled by their flavor text can independently change. Funny thing about resurrection in the story is Ainz can, but doesn't like to do it. Given cost and ramifications depending on situation. Though he does do it in story several times. He has also decided not to do so as equally. I like how there is a need of the deceased wanting to return to even have resurrection work. Besides there being spells that Ainz know that can stop resurrection of a certain tier as well. Maruyama put a good amount of thought into such powerful things like resurrection in his story.

I find it funny though how a lot of Ainz’s non-minmaxed character focus is the reason why power-scalers tend to rate him so highly. Like, Ainz even mentions when talking about different abilities how in game all serious players would have counter measures. But because power scaling is wack and you’re trying to compare people from entirely different worlds, stuff looks OP as hell. Kind of another point in favor of TFS Vegeta stance, power levels are bullshit.

The novels are way better. Overlord is at it's best when the author goes into extrem amounts of detail in order to create a very realistic world filled to the brim with political intrigues (and of course ainz wont understand anything that is going on under the surface). The anime cuts most of this and though I would not call it a bad show at all, the adaptation and it's charakters sadly lose a lot of depth because of that

I'd have to disagree. Reading how Ainz questions every single thing and doubts himself countless of times, making himself look like a total idiot, relying on his subjects' ideas and being led around, while he can just take over the world in seconds, is just sad and confusing. Especially after I've read a flashback to the first raid of Nazarik, as Ainz has been shown as pretty smart strategist. At least in anime they cut out all the annoying whining he goes through, cuz it rarely adds ANYTHING of value to the character. On the political details I might've agreed on, if I ever liked those details, to each their own.

@@neksuscat Ainz is not dumb at all, he himself thinks of himself as average and I agree, but he never had a great education and therefor no idea of politics or simular things while being surrounded by brillant geniuses. His imposter syndrom is a result of him being a replacebal saleryman for 90% of his life and is an important aspect of his charakter that helps to set him appart from bad leaders like philip or the elve king. Of course everybody will have preferences but the hilarious "sasuga Ainz-sama" moments when aniz stumbels into a complicaded plan and ruins everything just by beeing present, as well as the amount of thought put into every little aspect of even minor charakters are something that makes overlord special and sets it appart from simular storys

I've read a couple of comments here that said his past was elaborated through some extra notes and stuff that barely got out of Japan. If it's not in the story, how should I know about what makes the character and justifies his actions? To me his character takes a 180° turn once he's thrown into another world. From a smart strategist with low social skills to ever-doubting, awkward mess of a villain. I like him more as he is portrayed in the anime, tbh.

It's never the focus of a conversation but Aninz compares the situations he is curently in with his old life a lot. The brillant strategist part is still present in the new world like when he battled shalltear. But beeing good at playing Ygdrasil does not mean that he would exell in any other aspect of life at all. He was pasionat about this subject and had a lot of in game experience, but that does not change the fact that if you put someone who only ever had elementary school level education in control of a nation he will probably not be very good at it

I like how realistic Overlord is, everyone wearing something that fit with their class when fighting no matter what gender they are.. like, there is no bikini armour for female knight, even shaltear and albedo wearing full plate armour when in battle mode.. *if you think about it, Albedo's helmet looks like Ruin Sentinel Helmet from Dark Souls 2 *for Pelinal Whitestrake in the reply section, i think bikini armour in episode 1 season 1 is not a KNIGHT, more like thief class like clementine.. which is doesn't make sense if a thief wearing full plate armour with shield..

Shalltear is stronger than Ainz. Ainz designed his build around role-play. Taking everything related to necromancy and undead that he could so as to be the "Undead Necromancer" character. Shalltear was perfectly min-maxed. It's a testament to how good at planning combat Ainz actually is that he managed to win a fight he by all rights should have lost.

The anime waters down a lot. Overlord is pretty gruesome and brutal, and some of the stuff that's implied to be going on in the background but is never really explored is real messed up. I love the series because its basically one of the unusual series where the protagonist and his faction just go full unrepentant villain mode sometimes. Its even funnier when the MC is largely just bullshitting his way through just about every interaction. He ain't your usual isekai hero. Its edgy, but its a fun kind of edgy.

The thing about Ains's last 2 skills that he used to get rid of Einherjar is that together they're basically the ultimate instant kill combo The Goal of All Life is Death makes it so that all instant death spells temporarily ignore ALL immunities and resistances, but at the cost of all of them having their cast set to 10 seconds Meanwhile , Cry of The Banshee was the instant death spell that kills everything in a specific radious And for those asking why he didn't just use this at the very beginning, if he had done that, Shalltear would have revived ,but would have still had all her mana and skills (including Einherjar) putting Ains into an unwinnable situation as there was no way he could use his half-baked melee build (which he would inevitably resort to as he would run out of mana eventually) to kill Einherjar and bring Shalltear's health back down to where Fallen Down could kill her before she killed him.

The anime does actually tone down some stuff because the LN content gets way too brutal for TV. Case in point, Clementine's death scene. In the anime Ainz stops after her spine and ribs snap and she vomits blood with her last breath. In the LN, he keeps going until a good amount of her innards were squeezed out through her mouth, like a toothpaste tube that somebody had stomped on. He was THAT pissed.

Awesome to see you checking it out. Was very into Overlord when reading the LN. (Also, consider the abridged version. Has some hype moments.) Overlord is interesting. Ainz is great, but the best parts are how the entire world is dealing with the massive powerhouse of Nazerick suddenly popping into existence. There are tons of perspectives. It’s really a shame that the anime fell in quality, since the LN just gets better and better as the world expands.

Shalltear was technically stronger than Ainz at that fight at the end of season 1. But Ainz was a (great) PvPer, knew exactly her strengths and weaknesses, and got all the preparation he could have before fighting her. Shalltear thought that, being one of the strongest floor guardians after Rubedo, got her victories through sheer brute force without planning. This why she lost twice in a row. The latest season is as good if not better than the first season. One example is that Albedo will do way more than just be a waifu now. A lot of politics will happen and things will move fast but in a great pace.

I'm still pissed that they cut the Sacred Kingdom arc to make a movie out of it. We will still get it animated, but the story will be even more cut due to budget and time cost, also it disturb the continuity of the series. From the point of an anime-only viewer, the started talking about a phantomatic war that happened in a near kingdom from a certain episode (no spoiler) and how much it was a great deal. It is a important plot point and if you don't read the novel or watch the movie you might get confused.

Ainz isn't even a master PvPer. He is good, but he'd basically be in the top 10%. For an example, he never managed to beat Touch Me who was the best PvPer. Ainz was great at tactics and strategy, as he basically learned nearly every spell in the game and what to do with and against them. Also his build was complete RP. So it wasn't even optimized for PvP. He just went for all death and necromancy magics, and is why he has the skill The Goal Of All Life Is Death.

@@Myltsi91 When you are in the top 10% with a full RP set, you are by definition a master PvPer. With a min/maxed character, he would have more than a fair chance to beat Touch Me or anyone else. He is just that good with a far from optimal build.

The og guild was called nine's own goal because it had 9 people, touch me was the leader and the one who got ainz in Unfortunately something happened to one of the players and they had a fight, ulbert blamed touch me and they rebranded with Ainz as the leader since he got along with everyone and welcomed more people until tgey got to 41
