There are a few BJJ gyms around that have fundamentals classes for white belts only. The upper belts are allowed to train but it's all based on white belts and fundamental. That's what I'm considering

I was doing Muay thai for several years, eventually got moved up the line. I had no trouble with letting newer guys go ahead of me or holding pads for newbies. My coach would lose his temper at the new guys who couldn't grasp certain things but I was always chill and didn't mind helping people. Eventually I left that gym because of how some of the experienced people acted. Was quite toxic.

This is how it should be. Coaches that can't teach without losing their tempers, shouldn't be coaches. Especially to newbies. The beginning of any martial art is the most stressful. If you're just getting berated, then you're not going to learn and give up.

@@88Jwizard lmao nah. Wrestlers don’t do this shit and they’re notoriously more disciplined and successful than BJJ guys. Its just part of the general whack elitism that the belt system encourages. You show up and get treated like a bottom feeder with things like always being at the back of the line, but the longer you stay (and pay the gym money) the higher rank you’ll be and the more you can treat other people like bottom feeders and feel superior. Its the same business model cults like scientology use

Just remember, every black belt started as a white belt. Any gym where they make a white belt stand at the end of a line, is a gym you dont need to be at. Find a gym where a white belt can ask a purple belt to roll, and people see belts as a sign of who should mentor who, vs a totem pole.

It's about seniority and nothing more. At my gym, that would be a 16 year old black belt. The same guy that I train with 4 nights a week... If you think where you stand is a problem... your ego is the issue on hand, not the order in which you stand in line.

We don’t have a belt system cause I go to an mma gym we only roll no gi, but in every single jiu jitsu session the instructors encourage the beginners to roll with the experienced guys, I’ve learned so much from rolling with guys better than me. If you’re gym only wants you to roll with people your level then they are basically holding you back

As an uke for the fundamentals class I see this very often and I've even heard "if I warm up hard enough I might get a stripe" 😂. With all that being said we've all been there and it's easy to forget that we were white belts too at some stage.

I love bjj but a lot of stuff is just dumb like the belt system should just be for one belt, a black belt and have one way and one world test that is all the same. I’ve seen countless times different instructors hand out belts and stripes like candy and then some make people work and grind for years for a belt they should’ve had a long time ago. I’m SOO glad that I’m not like this… Been doing Jiu-Jitsu for almost a year and a half and I’m a 2-stripe white belt (just recently earned my 2nd stripe and working on my third). Been rolling with heavier guys and mostly blue belts, but Jiu Jitsu is the best decision I ever made.

I remember when I first lined up, and I didn’t even see the belts, I just stood next to whoever was closest. It was some old guy who was a brown or black belt, then the instructor informed me in a very nice way, hoping it was by accident. The most unrealistic part about this is everyone else has their belt tied properly. I usually don't see properly tied belts unless they cross train in an art where they make sure the belt is tied properly or they're brown belt or higher. I've even seen purple belts fall off during running.

Cauliflower ear means you look tough🤣, also you can drain it out if it gets bad, but if you do that you’ll need headgear to train while it heals, it’s an ongoing process, I’m 3 months in and my ears get tender but no signs of cauliflower ear yet
