Returning to Pine Valley Mountains, we don the packs and make our way the six miles up to Whipple Valley. Stopping in Hop Canyon to pump water, it's clearly evident that this particular water flow will dry up. The flow has all but stopped when only a week ago it was a fast moving creek. Something to think about. As we are resting in Hop Canyon it is vividly apparent that the bugs are in full swing! Spraying down we continue on.
After hitting the top ( a little over 9,000ft in elevation) we have a nice flat walk through some dense forest noticing a couple camp sites...all the while the Mosquitos continue to get worse.
Soon we are descending down the trail into Whipple Valley and there we find ourselves in a full blown Mosquito swarm..clouds of them. The Mosquitos are so bad that we have to retreat out of the Valley and hike back up to the top to try and get in a lesser swarm. We find a spot to camp near the edge of the forest providing some air movement and the bugs are indeed less intense. From there, it's just a waiting game cowering in the tent till dark when temps drive the bugs down and we can get out and warm up a meal.

Great video! I did this hike last June and tried to make a loop out of it. We went up Whipple to Summit trail then down Browns point trail. Would of been a 17 mile loop but the snow was to deep at the top of Whipple and had to come back down the same way. I wanted to redeem myself this year. Good to know the water isn't flowing. Keep the vids coming!

36 minutes and 39 seconds of good clean fun. I was truly looking forward to see this hike. Tall majestic pines! I am at a loss for words how much I love pine trees, and firs for that matter... and cedar, and sequoya, and spruce, and hemlock, and cypress, and larch. =DD // Edit: aaaa... now I see where I got the algae from, I asked you once why would you add it there... at 31:27 now I finally caught that! It is A nalgene water bottle =DD hilarious, Im sorry sometimes Im a bit slow to catch on =SS

We got totally chewed on this trip. As soon as it warms the bugs will be out so as early as possible..or..wait till Fall. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!

Hi there, just checking out this trail to consider it for a backpacking trip. What was the time of year and weather conditions for this mosquitoy trip? Weather for our trip looks like daytime highs in the low-70s and nighttime lows in the high-30s. Mid May. Thanks!

Thinking about trying an overnight hike here with a group. Any recommendation on Whipple vs Forsyth trail for better camp spots? Would probably aim to get about 3 miles in and set up. Also do you think the bugs will be in full force Memorial Day weekend?

Forsyth is a steep one, I did it to bag Burger Peak. Whipple might be the way to go if only three miles in. I was just doing a canyon underneath the Pine Valley Mts two days ago and the Cedar Gnats were ferocious. I would certainly think the bugs would be strong MD weekend. Safe travels!

Well, on this trip we saw some mule deer and the usual bird life. Mosquitoes were the overwhelming majority!
