This is the way we travelled to the UK in the 80’s and early 90’s before flying became (more) affordable. The sight of leaving Hook of Holland in the dark or seeing the English country site near Harwich at dawn is unmatched and makes me feel nostalgic. Fond memories of great concert, shopping and football trips to London in a time when London was still British.

Been on that boat many times - a good start to a holiday. I love the fact that there are two boats doing the crossing, and they are absolutely indistinguishably identical to each other, right down to the pictures in the restaurant. (the Hollandica and the Britannica). The service is generally very good on that crossing, and the boats are clean and not smelly, unlike some other crossings I've been on! The wake up call with 'Don't worry, be happy' is a particular van holiday moment for us!

I took a ferry from the UK to the Netherlands before the tunnel existed. The ferry does make it more of an experience, although the delays would be frustrating. Chris de Burgh had a song in which he said you should not pay the ferryman, until he gets you to the other side. They should play that song on the ferry.

If you are in the North of England, Stena Lines run overnight car ferries from Newcastle to Europoort (Rotterdam) and P&O Ferries from Hull to Europoort. I don’t know Stena personally, but I have been using the P&O service for over 40 years as I have been living in France or Germany since 1973 (when the UK joined the European Union), and have always been very satisfied. By the way, Harwich is pronounced HARRICH 😊.

This is the first video I have watched from you both, I have done hundreds of trips on those ferries from Harwich( pronounced like Harry but also with a silent W= Harrich) and Hoek Van Holland in trucks, cars and motorcycle. You probably got the larger cabin because all the two berths were fully booked. I found folding the top bunkbeds up against the walls got rid of the ratteling and also gives you more headroom below. They are the best ferry service going I find and still use them every time I travel back to Scotland from Germany to visit family near Edinburgh. One thing I did notice was tho' is that you put the wrong country sticker on your van. When travelling abroad, since 2021, due to brexit you have to have a 'UK' sticker NOT a 'GB' one. Safe journey guys.

I think the overnight boat goes especially slowly so you can sleep. I dont do any overnight travelling, so when I went on that route to Holland, I went with the day ferry which was about 4 to 5 hours. It may have been changed since then, maybe now only overnight. Now let's see what you got up to in Europe.

It’s travels at 14kts overnight and 17kts during the day saving 19% fuel on average (wind makes a difference as does tidal streams). So yes this impacts the time but I don’t think these people are technically minded

Stickers for driving outside the UK You may need to display a white oval UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle when driving outside the UK. This depends on your number plate and where you are going. You do not need a UK sticker if your number plate has the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack). You must display a UK sticker if your number plate has any of these: numbers and letters only, no flag or identifier a GB identifier with the Union flag a European Union flag a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales UK stickers have replaced the old white oval GB stickers. If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK. Do not put the sticker on your numberplate
