Hey! Welcome to a new adventure!
In this video, I'm reaching the top of Marmolada, the queen of Dolomites (highest mountain of Dolomites - 3343m)
With the first little snowfall of the year, the track was a little bit more complicated than usual, and I had to climb the via ferrata slower than I expected.
But the hospitality of Carlo Budel at Capanna Punta Penia was amazing. The view of Dolomites from up there is extraordinary.
Dedicated to the victims of Marmolada glacier collapse in July 2022. Rest in Peace.

My father climbed the Marmolada when he was only nine years old. Together with his two years older brother, his father and mother. They had booked an Italian mountain guide for this trip, but he doubted whether it was a good idea to take such young children up. My grandfather explained it a bit and said: “They can climb well, my boys already have a lot of experience with hiking in the mountains despite their age”. The guide hesitated but turned a blind eye. On the way they had to cross a large ice bridge on the glacier. My grandfather asked the guide how strong it was, the guide replied: "I expect that this bridge will not be there next week or the week after". So they walked over the bridge, my grandfather was the back of the rope group and behind him the ice bridge collapses. All in all it was the best climb my father has made.

Dolomites is still one of my favorite places on this planet. The peaks are just so unique. Last time I was there, Marmolad sadly already hat to much snow and ice but I did multiple tours on the sub-3000 peaks arround it and its always an iconic landmark.

Nice video and efforts! Brought to me some memories when I climbed Marmolada 3 years ago and had the honor to stay the night with the Austrian mountaineer Hansjörg Auer, who sadly died only months after with David Lama and Jess Roskelley on the descent after reaching the summit of Howse Peak in Banff National Park of the Canadian Rockiesq, three of the best Alpinists in the world. R.I.P to them and also those who died in Marmolada

My wife and I climbed to Punta Penia straight up from the kabel lift station facing the Glacier and the Lake. Not the Via Ferrata you took on the West side of the mountain. First in 2001 on 9/11! We made it up the Glacier and climbed the unsecured rock section, but on top we had to give because our cheap crampons were no good. They were only attached to the heel and did not provide enough grip on the steep snow on the way to the top. In 2003 again in September but with better crampons we made it all the way to the top. In the last 20 minutes we were surprised by a thunder storm and found the shelter closed. We found the door from a small storage room open and sheltered there. After 10 minutes other people arrived. They came from the Via Ferrata you took on the film. A party of 3 and another of 5. One of the guys found another door to a bigger room with beds, mattresses and blankets. This was not the restaurant are. After a little more than an hour the party of 3, the Austrians, decided to go down, even if the storm was still raging but the thunders had passed. We decided to wait with the Czech party of 5, to see if the weather would further improve. It was around 4 PM and the lift would close at 7. We wanted to avoid descending another 700 meters to the lake, at least a 2 hours trip. So our dead line to leave the cabin would be 5-5.15 PM. I went outside to check the conditions but non of us felt comfortabel to take the steep snowy descend with the heavy wind, so we had to spend the night there. In the cabin during the night it was only 2 degrees C above zero. We didn't plan to stay. We expected to need about 2,5 hours up. 30 minutes on top and another 90 minutes for the descend. We were short on food and had left our coats in the car trunk at the lake. The issue is that in the morning the sun was shinning full on the Glacier climb. The first time we climbed the glacier and the rock section 2 years earlier, I was the only one wearing my ski jacket but it was so hot, so this time we both decided to leave them behind. In the middle of the night me and my wife went out for a pee and the wind almost blew us once we stepped beside the cabin. The following morning at 9.30h 2 elderly experienced guides from a Czech party came to rescue the other 5. My wife and I used 2 big plastic bags for additional wind protection. One of the Czech women gave my wife a thin pair of wool gloves, for she had non. I had my bicycle gloves I use for climbing. We tied ourselves to ropes and the 9 of us went down against the still heavy wind. In 90 minutes we were at the chair lift to the lake. We had breakfast and were so tired that once we reached our car at the lake we decided to drive in the direction of home, skipping our last day, the Friday. At 4 PM we stopped at a hotel in Fussen Germany. We went straight to bed and slept til dinner. In 2005 we went back with our 13 year old son. This time in June. We climbed the Glacier but my son didn't dare to climb the rock section. In those days, still an unsecured climb. My wife and he went back to the lift station while I made it to the top. It was June and there were plenty of people that day. Finally I could enjoy the views. The Sella in particular (Piz Boe). Note, in those years there was far more snow and ice on the Glacier. The Glacial climb to the top was the most popular of the 2 trails up to Punta Penia.
