So I dunno how I discovered this channel. I’m not a big fish guy nor have I ever camped or eaten anything freshly harvested or caught. But man, this cancel is so relaxing to listen to. Opened my eyes to what’s possible! Great channel chef!

So cool and nostalgic! I lived 35 years on Oahu and did lots of camping/fishing/surfing trips to the outer islands. Lots of Opi’hi on the outer islands, Oahu is mostly fished out. Spiny lobster is so sweet! A’ama crabs we used to catch using a long forked stick with a piece of fishing line tied between the “Y” section of the stick. The crabs don’t run away from the stick so we’d lower it toward the crab on the rocks and try to get the fishing line right between the crab’s eye and the head. As soon as the line touched that area, the crab pulls his eyes down into the sockets of its head and traps the fishing line between the eye stalk and head. Caught! Very old Hawaiian trick for catching A’ama crabs. Way easier than chasing the fast little buggers around the rocks. Great catch and cook as usual! I miss Hawaii immensely even though I’ve only been gone 3 years, now in Washington State. Mahalo nui loa for the great channel and your buddy Ryan is No Ka oi! (The best!) 🤙🏼

@@jtf267, That’s for sure! I love Washington! Caught my first couple salmon up here, lots of trout, Dungeness crab is by far the best crab in my opinion. The mountains in the Pacific Northwest are stunning and wild. I miss Hawaii for some things, but it’s so isolated and hot all the time. It got boring. Plus, you have to be rich to actually live there now and most folks can’t even afford to enjoy what Hawaii has to offer. Like a lot of folks from Hawaii (I work with four guys from Hawaii), we’re all Washington people for life now! Most of us will never move back to Hawaii and most can hardly afford to visit it. Oh well, here you can travel the United States in a car for thousands of miles and see different things. In Hawaii, you only drive in a circle and see only the same things over and over for years. Hard to imagine “Paradise” getting boring to most people, but I assure you it does.

I hardly comment but totally love this episode. I like how you show the struggle of trying to catch a fish so that you can feed yourselves. You two totally compliment each other. Ryan catches the fish and Taku makes an epic meal out of it. Ryan is such a cool dude. Very easy going and one of those people that you want as a friend. I hope you two make more videos together in the future.

Great Duo and teamwork! Glad you have been showing some of the losses on these last few videos! We all experience those and lots of times they are more memorable!! I grew up doing these type things with my buddies! Our harvest consisted more of venison, catfish, bream, wild turkey, hogs, redfish, gators, swamp cabbage, and greens but we always survived and made life-long friends and memories! Love both of you guys channels!

At 27:00 the fish that bit your line was an aha or houndfish in English. They sit up top on the water column here in Hawaii. You have to let the bait dive deep when close to shore. Trolling will put them in the aha zone

When you were slow-trolling that live Opelu and it got cleanly cut in half, that was an Ono my friend. Ono’s jaws are like a pair of scissors. They cut cleanly. Every other fish would tear the bait. Ono cut like a knife. I’ve caught many Ono through the years in Hawaii and when the bait is cut perfectly, you just lost an Ono. They see the hook and avoid it. Smart and fastest pelagic fish in the ocean. Me and my fishing partner were trolling from Oahu to Molokai to escort the canoe and paddle-board races back to Oahu. All the escort boats traded fish for Molokai sweet bread and Molokai watermelon with the locals who showed up for these events. Did this for years. Just outside Hale ‘O Lono harbor we hooked a Mahi. My buddy was the owner and captain of the boat, I’m on deck reeling in a Mahi just outside the harbor entrance. I got the small Mahi right to the rail and an Ono came rushing in and hit the swivel on the leader. Cut the line, released the Mahi and we lost the Mahi, the swivel, and a $50 trolling lure. The Ono was just attacking the stainless swivel. I saw all this happen and man was it cool to watch. Other times, I’m just setting out our trolling spread and as soon as the lure touched the water, an Ono grabbed it. They’ll beat up your lures, tear the hell out of your skirts, but man, they are one of the very best tasting fish in the ocean. “Ono” in Hawaiian means, “Good tasting”. And yep, they are definitely that. Just watch those scissor jaws they have. They’ll lop off a finger in a heartbeat if you’re not careful. Thanks for the great channel and reminding me of so many stories I have from fishing in Hawaii. Aloha. 🤙🏼

I know I’m pretty late on seeing this video but so awesome that you made it to Hawaii. I’m from Kauai but the Big Island gots some epic fishing spots. And that one part where you were dragging that Opelu and got a bite but it came off and frayed your line could have possibly been a Ono or maybe a small sail fish. I’m pretty sure if your hook was a little bigger and did a double hook set up ( one through its nose and one above the tail) would have bettered your chances of hooking up to a fish with live opelu. Hope to see you back in Hawaii doing another series of videos, a survival 3 days or 5 days eating only what you catch would be epic! 🤙🏽🤙🏽

one of my favorite episodes, I have been fishing a long time and never ever seen that bait and switch ever happen. Maybe a circle hook might help when ono and other fast fish are on the chew - Hanapa'a. I was watching and thinking I would like to try doing that same kayak trip until I saw your exit up the ladder - that was funny but No Way wouid I want to do that!

The skeeter were bad so we slept near the water so the wind pushed em away thankfully, we ate sheepshead and blue crabs we found in the grass beds nearby. It was a 4 mile kayak paddle + getting past a jetty channel to get back to our cars. I was exhausted still In the morning, we ate the fish and then hunted the crab. Only had like 3 hours of sleep 😂
