Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, Thailand to Malaysia: Join me on a 30 hours train journey all the way from the capital of Thailand to Kuala Lumpur. I decided to go on this mega train ride instead of taking a simple 2 hours flight from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, because I want to challenge myself and try something new. I have never been on an overnight sleeper train and they are actually quite popular in Thailand and in Asia in general. In order to make the ride as comfortable as possible I have booked myself a first class sleeper train cabin. We are also going to compare the train experiences between Thailand in Malaysia. So, how is an overnight sleeper train in Thailand? Will the whole journey be super uncomfortable? And which country offers the better train experience? Let's find out!
Here you can book the Thailand train:
www.dticket.railway.co.th (switch to English in the right top corner and look for the special express cnr train to get this 1st class sleeper cabin)
Here you can book trains in Malaysia:

Welcome back to Malaysia! Malaysia used to have the First Class private cabin that you've had in Thailand but they were decommissioned when the electric track completed, which cut the travel time by a significant margin. When the southern part of this project is completed soon, you can travel from Padang Besar at the Thai Border direct to Johor Bahru at the Singapore border without stopping in KL or change train in Gemas in around 8-9 hours from 2 nights journey previously. I wish Malaysia could have something like the ICE 4 train in Germany because they truly should have it - 3 hours max for Padang Besar to KL and 2 hours max from KL to Singapore are well within achievable. Your observation and comment on Southern Thailand is interesting because it was the result of the Bangkok Treaty 1909 between the King of Siam (Thailand) and the British (last colonialist of Malaysia), which essentially split these Muslim provinces in Southern Thailand from the rest of the Malay states in what is now Peninsula Malaysia.

The ETS train that Ken took is already the fastest train in Malaysia and the fastest train on meter gauge in the world (max operating speed:140km/h). If you are hoping for a high speed train train line in Malaysia, there is currently an official proposal for a HSR line between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. In fact the Malaysian government just recently restarted the HSR project. However, even though there were suggestions to further extend the SG-KL HSR line to Penang and Thailand in the past, there still no concrete plan/proposal/feasibility study from the government for that, so it's less likely to be built in the near future.

Yeah ETS from KL to JB will be completed soon, but HSR still under open tender.

between rawang to kl sentral i have to say ETS ride is bumpy & slow due to aging track sharing with komuter. After rawang to padang besar average 120-140kmh.

I'd heard that train services between Hat Yai & Malaysia was suspended for a while as the tracks were sabotaged/bombed by insurgents that want to establish an independent state using Thailand's 4 southernmost provinces?

The first-class cabin in Thailand is really different, and it feels more comfortable than the ones I saw in other countries before! The overall feeling of the Thai train is very clean, it is a good train! It's a pity that the first class in Malaysia is not a box, so it can't be evaluated, because you have no experience of sleeping on a Malaysian train! Finally, thank you for your sacrifice. You gave up taking the plane to shoot this video for us. I wish you a happy travel in Malaysia! 👍🤩🙌

Malaysia train used to have overnight cabin. After elctric train completed..journey time cut in half. No need cabin anymore. From my experiences Thailand and malaysia cabin train 98% same. Slow and steady, bumpy and keep me wake up every 30 minutes 😅😅

I am a massive fan of travelling by rail. The journey I am planning is from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and from there down to Singapore but with stops for up to three days at a time in Southern Thailand, George Town, Kuala Lumpur and finally Singapore. A major benefit of train travel is that luggage is not weighed and you can take ample suitcases along. The trick to sleeping on a train is to take a sleeping tablet that will knock you out for the night. In my experience I can always get boiling water on a train from before sunrise to late at night and therefore I take along a thermos flask in addition to sachets of hot chocolate and coffee. Stock up on fresh fruit which only requires a pocket knife to prepare. Superficially a train journey is more expensive and takes considerably longer than air travel but that is not the whole equation. Firstly rail travel is one of the best ways to meet local people and to get a real insight into how people outside of the tourist areas actually live. If your journey is 30 hours. it means that you have saved on the cost of at least one (or two) hotel rooms and in my experience you can avoid sleeping in hotels for multiple nights by travelling overnight by train which makes train travel a magnificent option for a budget-traveller.

The train does go very slowly on the Thailand southern line until the dual lines are finished which supposed to be middle next year. At the moment the train is waiting in many places for other trains to pass. We did an overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok it was about 12-14 hours. Never again sleep on a train. 3-4 hours is enough for sure. In Malaysia we caught fast train from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh and it was very fast and very comfortable. I would say Malaysia trains are nicer. Great video Ken thank you 😁

Trains in Malaysia are more modern overall however it's useless when they have such low frequency and they are booked up days in advance even outside peak -season. Unfortunately Malaysia is still car-centric which contributes with a lot of air pollution

The train from Pedang Besar to Kuala Lampur was a pleasure.Took an upper sleeper from Bangkok to Pedang Besar.I found it awkward.Over night in Pedang Besar wasn’t blissful but not a bad place.Loved Sentral Station in KL , walking distance to the Brick Yards District.Plenty of reasonable hotels there. If you’re a SE Asia sojourner and have time ,make the trip from BKk to KL.

Hi Ken, what a great trip you are taking! I love long traintrips, saves me a lot of money for a hotel and I really sleep well in moving things. But in Thailand I like the second class non aircon better, the beds are wider and softer, and you meet local people that are (mostly) likeminded. My parents always said that the journey is as interesting and important as the destination. When my father retired in 1991 I took my parents on our first backpacking trip toThailand and we slept in several trains. I fell in love with Thailand then, and returned many times. It is wonderful to watch your videos, especially about Thailand. Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey to Indonesia. Alles Gute!

how surprising that 2nd class beds are better!
@diethuis
@diethuis 11 ай бұрын
@@oxoelfoxo well, they are completely different because of the different setup. Also you sleep lengthwise in the direction the train is going in, so the movement is (I think) more comfortable. the beds in second class are made from two wide seats being pushed towards eachother with a topper over them, these seats are soft and comfortable by daytime also. It is even funnier that the fancooled cars are more comfortable, because it get really cold in the aircon cars at night, and in fancooled cars the windows open and the lower seats will have airflow during the ride. Love it!

Your cabin in that sleeper train looked nice, compared to the one l had experienced during my journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Good that you used ETS from Padang Besar to KL...more comfortable, faster and food and drinks are provided for business class passengers. No food and drinks given if one uses economic class 😂😢 Well, a big thanks for sharing this informative video. Hello Ken, delighted you will be reporting on slower forms of travel within SE Asia. There are so many flight reports on KZbin and they have become boring. When you travel around Indonesia you must check to see if the new HS (high speed) line between Jakarta and Bandung is operational. Its original opening date has been delayed. This line is built by China and uses Chinese HS trains. In the early days the drivers may be Chinese nationals as it takes time to teach Indonesian nationals to operate HS trains.

There used to be a sleeper train plying Butterworth(BW)-KL and KL-Johor Bharu(JB) in the 1990's. I used to travel on the train (BW-KL) when I was in uni in the early 1990's. As others have said, the sleeper trains on BW-KL route was decommissioned after the ERL service started. ERL service terminates in Gemas in Negeri Sembilan according to the KTM website. The Gemas-JB stretch is scheduled to start service in 2025. If I'm not mistaken, the only sleeper train service in Peninsular Malaysia is the east coast train from KL to Tumpat, Kelantan. If you want to sleep well, taking a sleeping pill is the best way. Choose one with a short duration of action, so you don't feel groggy when waking up the next day.

Great thumbnail! You somehow look a decade younger in that pic!! I always enjoy your videos. You're an adventurous, respectful traveler. It's nice not worrying about food poisoning in Malaysia, isn't it?! Safe travels.
