We needed to get to Belgrade in Serbia. Trouble is, we were in Albania. Watch our journey through three countries as we try to navigate public transport and two border crossings.

Just a month ago I bought the night train ticket from Bar to Belgrade at Bar station but there was a problem or maintenance on the railway between Bar to Bijelo Polje but the super kind old lady at the ticket office tried to get it even though she couldn’t speak English. She explained the situation very kindly. They took us by bus from Bar to Bijelo Polje station and the train was waiting there. I slept well at night and woke up at 5 am. The sunrise view was fascitanting. Highly recommended!

Such a beautiful train journey! Glad you had somebody help you with the replacement bus, it can be difficult when you don’t speak the language 🙂

That station in Belgrade (Topčider station) where they drop you off is actually closed permanently few days ago since it was just a temporary option because of construction of the Belgrade-Budapest hgh-speed line,now train finish at the main station in Belgrade. I think most of people living in Belgrade would have no idea how to get to that station, since also tram line that goes there is not operational last two years due to construction of boulevard that will go next to that closed station. At 8:50 thar big building right on the corner is Faculty of Law of Belgrade University, i got my degree there :)

Thanks for the info, that explains why we were so confused. Ah, no way! Our apartment was right next to it.

I took this train in June 2019 from Belgrade to Bar during the day. Serbian and Montenegrin people were very nice and the price of everything was very cheap. Thanks for the nice video

Did they take your debit card at Podgorica station? Planning to take this trip on Friday. Online it says €28.80 each for first class but now I’ve seen this I’m taking that lightly🥲 the balkans… 😩

This is a very naive question but here goes. Is there any train in which you are able to travel from Serbia to Albania without stamping your passport passing Montenegro or Kosovo presumably because you are remaining in a portion of the train in which it is impossible for you to exit while passing through either country?
@izzieanddale
@izzieanddale Жыл бұрын
Don’t feel bad about your question! I doubt it, because the officers get on the train to check your passports if you don’t get off. It’s better to travel through the legal channels so that you are protected by the laws in the country you travel to, or to seek asylum support if that’s what you need.

Such a shame you slept through some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. The Belgrade - Bar train route ranks among the top 5 scenic ones in Europe. How come nobody told you that?!?
@izzieanddale

We already did the part of that train line that’s supposed to be one of the most scenic in the world (Bar to Podgorica) in a previous video :) the train goes by Skadar Lake and we actually stopped off at the lake for a few days.

Where do you get the local currency in cash? Or do you mostly use credit/debit bank cards during your journeys?
@izzieanddale
@izzieanddale 2 жыл бұрын
Not many places in the Balkans take credit cards, so we use debit where we can. But some places still only take cash, so we tend to get out as much as we think we’ll need in the city centre at ATMs.

You have exchange spots on every corner in cities (named "menjačnice" in Serbo-Croatian speaking area), here most of people save money in Euros because its stable and will not lose value or pay rent with Euros, so even locals need to excange few times a month so they are easy to find. As for cards i can answer for Serbia, almost all places accept them (supermarkets, restaurants, post office etc), except newsstand shops on the streets which only take cash.

Thank you! The videos are less than a month old. We needed our vaccination certificates for all countries and we didn’t need any tests. But definitely check all this on the UK gov website because it may change depending on where you’ve been within the last 10 days. Also, definitely get the train between Montenegro and Serbia - it’s more comfortable than the buses and there is a day train as well as the night one we took.

@@izzieanddale There is also regular airline Podgorica-Belgrade for about 70 euros and it is only 1h ride. Train is over 10h due to poor railway condition, but that railway line is one of the most scenic in the world since it goes over the mountains and many tunnels/bridges.

Most people consider the Bar-Belgrade train (this one) the most scenic because of the views of Lake Skadar. We did that leg of the journey during the day, in a previous video 🙂

Sorry but you screwed up massively. Bar to Bijelo Polje (the first 3 hours or so) is the finest train journey in the world and you did it in the dark. Ugh. But hey, at least you had a bed. Great. Go back and do it again properly. 🤣
