This conversation is a little old, so one claim is outdated: We're not ABOUT to reach 8 billion people. We are 8 billion people. Despite the claims that we have enough resources for far more people than we have... The truth is more complicated than that. So, how do we deal with it? We have... some of the ideas ever thought.

Harry forgets one thing. The ideal society, IE one evolved to such an extent that banning sex would even be remotely feasible and wouldn’t cause an immediate revolution, should be capable of raising citizens who are disciplined and educated enough to resist the temptations of addiction. Someone who doesn’t commit rape or murder only because it’s illegal, and not because they are a disciplined, noble person is not a good person at all. If Harry really wants to fight mediocrity he should promote the raising of citizens capable of freely indulging in sex, pornography, and drugs of all kinds without succumbing to addiction. The ideal society is not one of robots who never indulge in anything because it’s illegal, it is of people who can have all the sex and cocaine they want, but are responsible enough to be moderate and never become addicted. Tl;DR: fuck London and I hope Cleo made it to a restroom.

Trying something new isn't a problem, nor it is to use it with moderation If we really have to compare drugs to sex, it's true that both are addicting, but the whole point is to not get addicted Addiction is not something you can't control, drugs/sex makes you happier because it releases the funny chemicals, but true "mental" strenght is when someone doesn't need to rely on those to live or live happily, oppositely one that only wants to feel happy like it happens in those moments will only depend on it more, making them more degenerate as the other precious things in life won't make them as happy It's no different than a kid asking for candies, we have little control over ourselves and we don't consider or don't care about the side effects, but if one is mature enough they eat them without getting addicted and only running on a diet of candies So i believe people can have sex maturely and do drugs maturely, even if sadly many people don't do the same I will agree that currently there's an overglorification of the act of sex, it's a running joke gone for so long that it's unnerving, at least some people seem to realize spamming 69 doesn't make you funny

And we see where that led them. Previous cultural norms made male infants more "valuable", causing parents to abort girls en masse. Today, you find yourself with a whole generation of few women being seen as assets, and numerous men who find themselves with an often unwinable competition to find a partner. Not to mention the fact that even though the ban if mostly lifted now, the aging of the population and the financial stress of the single children to take care of their parents and sometimes grandparents alone, younger generations simply cannot afford a family. It is a nasty vicious cycle that I expect to see crashing in my lifetime.

Even if people generally had boys and girls in equal measures, the fact that you are even more luck of the draw by being the first to be born in a family is not a fact that will be lost even amidst the first generation from that act and will be at least be protested against in the third generation from that act.

23:00 "Unlike"? Skydiving, skiing AND sailing all have a VERY real risk of death and the phrase "Adrenaline junkie" exists for a reason. Additionally, Harry's mindset seems to have the goal of every single human being on the planet working every waking second of their day, which will not only eventually lead to burnout - causing their performance to plummet - but also make their life MISERABLE. If I was forced into a life of work after work after work non-stop, I would remove myself from the universe with a bullet to the head then and there to put myself out of my agony because a life of only work is not a life. As bowl has said, I don't owe this world anything. If I die, I don't want my last words to be "finally".

I feel that Harry’s argument was uncharacteristically weak in this video. It was mainly predicated on slippery slope and a good amount of ad hominem. When he was proven wrong, he’d back out with a “that’s not my point.” Plus, a lot of the comparisons he made were just outright false. While sex, if very irresponsibly performed, does have chances for STDs, it is not nearly as self destructive as the psychoactive drugs he compared it to. Another thing, a lot of the things he listed as the cons of sex were repetitive, merely subjective, or both. He also failed to consider both sides of the argument before making his point, cementing it as a biased and emotional argument (which is pretty uncharacteristic for Harry of all people).

I read something from a Science magazine a few years ago that said the population will peak at 11 billion (which is comfortably sustainable with current infrastructure) but will then start going down. Therefore overpopulation isn’t that big of an issue. Regarding the specific issue of traffic, you could probably blame that on the city not being planned efficiently, which is understandable since it’s hella old. Additionally, less people means that the world will be less productive. There’ll be less manpower, fewer scientists, and progress will decrease worldwide. Less people does mean more resources per person, yes, but it would probably take more effort to obtain, process, and distribute those resources in the first place. As for making babies, I’ll leave that to sexperts like Harry and Fridge Guy to argue over.
@Mad-Goose

The population growth rate is certainly slowing at least. The total population is also starting to plateau in some first world countries. Pretty sure that last I've heard, Japan is going through a negative population growth. Personally, I think trying to control population growth through fertility is a bad idea. We kinda need more young people than old people to make sure we can have everyone taken care of and if there's more elderly people than young people, it's definitely going to be quite the challenge for our current society. I think the best approach to overpopulation is to instead focus on what to do with the elderly population and I'm surprised Harry didn't take this approach.

I don't think less people would mean less productivity as less people means less problems that need to be solved by scientists. As long as there aren't too few people, we should be able to process resources for people at the same rate, since per Capita nothing will have changed. Small countries don't seem to have too big an issue with resource acquisition compared to larger ones.
@dan_man3087
@dan_man3087 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, the overpopulation is not only a resources problem, but the societal\job and infrastructure problem as well. When there're 10 people fighting over to get 1 job place - that's more or less healthy competition. But what will happen if the number of people suddenly increases? What if it's 15 people? 20 people? 50 people? You need only 1 person for the job, but what all other 49 are gonna do? Especially if they're spent a big part of their lives to learn how to do the job without learning something else as a "main skill". That's a recipe for disaster, like poverty and jobless people, which can lead to a lot of depressed and homeless people. Add in AI that already almost took workplaces from designers and artists... How those people will earn money for themselves? Secondly - there can be enough resources in "raw material" form. But is there enough "finished" products and infrastructures? Does everyone have a house? Do they have enough good schools and kindergardens? Power plants? Medical centers and meds? List can go on and on. There already some statistics which stating that people under 30 are living with their parents much and much often nowadays, than mere 10-20 years ago. Because they can't even afford houses, have a job problems and higher probability of mental issues that somewhat prevents them to living alone. You would think we need to prepare for the population rising, but noooo... We continue pumping babies without solving those issues first. So from the resources point of view we really are not exactly overpopulating. But we still don't have any "place" for that many people to live, educate themselves and work for society. Which is quite sad.

You can talk about important topics, about solving problems, about understanding new concepts... the possibilities are as limitless as our very souls. In that case, getting to have sex is as easy as saying: "Hey, wanna go a round?" So there's really no drawback to doing it in your spare time. There's no hygiene issues because you could both take a shower beforehand, and you know your pairing well enough to be aware of any sickness. It can be done in moderation, and it WILL be healthy because it will strengthen your relationship, which already gives you a lot of benefits by itself. Sexual Intercourse, like everything else, has its risks and its rewards, but done in moderation, the outcome WILL be positive to the average person.

An interesting conversation. Too bad most of it was borderline Malthusian BS. One of the issues of reducing population is the devastation to production and supply chains it creates. What happens when you get rid of half (or more) of all miners? Farmers? Truck drivers? Factory workers? Production and transportation of product collapses. Quality of life degrades. We can see this in populations that have gone through the early stages of demographic collapse. Japan would have overtaken the US as the world's premiere super power by this point, but they stopped having kids. As such, there was a demographic collapse their economy is still staggering from, and the world is still under US hegemony, because the US maintained population growth and Japan did not. In addition, sex is productive, assuming you are looking to have children. This is because not only were many adults that are current producers once "crotch goblins" themselves, but when a parent has a child they are often driven to want to make a world that is better for their children, and is sustainable so that their children and grandchildren can have a better quality of life than they once had. If you have a population only working to keep things good as long as they are alive, well, you have what we currently have. A cold, uncaring, borderline cyberpunk dystopia. Because now most everyone isn't having children, populations are on the decline in most all 1st world countries, and large populations of people see no need to keep the world going once they are gone. When a population is reduced, you don't just reduce the population without also reducing productivity. This is why events of mass death among humans are called disasters. Because many humans dying in one place has farther reaching implications than we like to admit. When you lose a person, you don't just lose a number in a statistic, but everything that person creates. All their ideas. All their potential. After all, imagine this channel without any one of it's cast. Imagine if one day Bowl was just gone. Gringo. Harry. Fridge Dater. We would also, just on this channel, lose a significant amount of banter and input from those individuals. Reducing the population isn't going to help make things better. In fact, it's just going to be more of what we are currently going through in 1st world countries, because population reduction is currently happening in 1st world countries. We aren't making enough people to replace ourselves. And that isn't a symptom of our societies collapsing, it's one of the direct factors causing the collapse and degeneracy in modern society. The solution to our problem likely isn't less people. It's more. That, throw in a little bit of planet colonization, maybe reduce the population density of cities (the real reason for all that traffic. After all, country towns and properly planned suburbs have none of those issues), and things might start getting good again.
@Saga_Anserum
@Saga_Anserum Жыл бұрын
I think decrowding cities is a damn fantastic idea. and thank you for pointing out the Malthusian-ness of this, I totalyl forgot the word I was looking for but now that you've said it it makes a lot more sense. People are not exclusively bad, and so more people is not necessarily a bad thing. Honestly, if we funded more education in the places where the population is currently rising the most, I think we would be in a much better place.
@iantaakalla8180
@iantaakalla8180 Жыл бұрын
While Malthusianist ideas are flawed, humans are creating a world of scarcity where nothing is actually going to be overflowing or even abundant so in this one case Malthusian ideas are relevant. Even if we become stable similar stuff will pop up elsewhere, so I doubt Malthusian problems will never show up.
@MikeStudios08
@MikeStudios08 Жыл бұрын
@@iantaakalla8180 That's not necessarily true. Resources only appear scarce for many people due to issues with methods of supply and delivery. In theory we should be at war for any number of resources right now, but for many things we end up creating a technology that allows us to access previously inaccessible supplies, or find new accessible ones. Oil and natural gas for instance, was supposed to be mostly depleted in natural reserves in the US. But then we discovered fracking and got good at it. And that's part of the reason we were paying almost $2.00 USD per gallon of gas during 2020, not just because a loss of demand, but also because there was a lot more supply going around. The other issue was delivery. We have, in recent years, seen prices shoot up for various supplies because of things besides just regular inflation from money printing. See war, issues with cargo container supplies, many processing plants going down either for maintenance or due to disasters such as fire, a shortage of truck drivers, and that one time someone couldn't drive a boat straight down a canal. Eliminating people solves none of those issues, it in fact makes them worse. You take multiple truck drivers, farmers, processing plant workers, planes, etc. Out of the economy through Malthusian ideals of depopulation and you wreck all those delicate supply chains. Workers nowadays don't just produce a few items for themselves either. Each individual is responsible for moving, making, or modifying resources for thousands if not tens of thousands of people. You take them out of the equation and those resources never get made, or if they do they go nowhere. And given the intertwined nature of our economy today, you can't eliminate anyone without a potential for major disaster. Say you just eliminate one programmer right? Seems like eliminating one programmer won't screw the supply chain. Well guess what, that programmer was the only person who knew how to write the program for a specific machine needed for the mass production of mayonnaise. Now, once all those machines break, or have a coding error, there will be no one who can replace the Mayo machines. Sure, eventually we might replace them (assuming the population is increasing), or the machine itself, but that can take months to years, and in the meantime, no one gets Mayo, which means every product that uses Mayo now also has to go without, eliminating them from the shelves as well. Malthusian ideas create a dangerous cascading effect when put into practice. Because the economy that feeds us all is a delicate machine that no human can singlehandedly come to a full comprehension of. And without that economy to harvest the resources, no matter how "plentiful" they might be, we might as well not have them. Sure, Earth by itself may not always have enough resources for all of humanity. That's the importance of space travel, and farther developing our abilities to harvest and reuse resources. But we need a lot of people to accomplish that, as a task like space travel requires alot of specialists with alot of knowledge in their field. But these people won't be able to exist if some nutter comes along and eliminates large portions of the population because they either don't like humans, or don't understand the basics of how supply chains work. They will be instead struggling to survive in a worst case scenario, or in a best case scenario they will have to instead work in one of the needed jobs to make sure humanity doesn't fall apart. Eliminating people doesn't solve our resource crisis. It directly perpetuates it as the minds and abilities required to access that resource are eliminated in a cruel act perpetuated by someone with a child's shoe size for an IQ. Germany and the Nazis tried murder and eugenics when trying to win WWII. The result? They lost as they either murdered much of their population, or saw them flee. The Americans and Russians who took the refugees in? Well now they both have a few thousand small suns they can drop on anyone they find displeasing.

Frankly, I disagree with everyone here on the overpopulation stance. It's not about the kids, it is the education of the people, as well as the willingness to have everyone work together. Every parent doesn't want their kid to suffer, save for a very scant few who were taught wrong by society and their own parents. This is a very apparent situation that you need to look no further than South America or Africa. Illegal to abort outright, in some places even with the inclusion of forced insemination. Children are treated as resources and less people. Meanwhile, in all other parts of the world, we generally give somewhat of a damn. Giving more of a damn about resource stability is better than wanting an entire village of children; if this was taught than the population would stagnate as expected as everything on earth would be used properly.

Honestly, there is no ethical way to fully remove overpopulation, nor is there any surefire way to decrease birth rates either. We will end up like any species who overpopulate. Resources will run out and we will go through a crisis, and increase in numbers again once things have stabilised. It won't be pretty and I am certainly not looking forward to it, nor am I under the illusion I will deal with it better than anyone else, but going back a little might help stop humanity's systemic destruction of every existing ecosystem. After all, if we are forced back technologically, what's to say we can easily recover this lost knowledge after a few generations of struggling to survive? The easily accessable resources that made the industrial revolution possible do no longer exist, and current technology is way too complex for its usage to be possible without continuous and quite specific education. We'll be forced into a slower progress, which while I believe Harry would hate the idea, might be better for us as a whole. Also, nice to see that Bowl is pretty reasonable when he's not doing a bit. No because average amount of children born has gone way down overpopulation won’t be a threat. Also as technology becomes better everyday we will be able to use more parts of the world that were previously impractical to build housing on. An example of this is Australia, currently 94% of citizens live on the coast but with advanced digging equipment becoming more accessible and efficient we will be able to live in arid middle Australia off the underwater springs such as the great Artesian basin. The reason population has boomed so greatly through the 1900’s is due to new soil fertilisation methods and the average person having 12-15 Kids. The birth rates and amount of food has evened out so we won’t have another population spike until another revolution is made in the food cultivation industry. This is only important ignoring the almost guaranteed path humanity will take becoming interstellar and thus having more room on other planets. Over population is not a threat and people who view it as being one watch way too much sci fi and never actually research the topic.

Gotta say, as long as there is a supply and demand, anything can become a profession. As a need, even if it's not primary, there is always a place for sex workers. As long as the primary instincts of humans exist, we will have the demand for it, even if there are replacements or more efficient options. Because it's not just the product that we desire for our survival and propagation, it's the byproducts that reward us due to our biological functions. Even if we can become transhuman and offsource the process to make it more efficient, it requires the development of a new industry for what comes naturally to us. It is the equivalent of getting formula instead of breastfeeding and we are creating a solution for what was not a problem in the first place. The by product of this would be that we no longer need sex, and it would be a non option since it would be a need that doesn't need fulfilling and a desire that does not exist to tempt anyone.

What Harry doesn't realise is that we never intentionally do anything, at all, for *any reason other than pleasure. EVER.* Why are you making dinner? To reduce your hunger. So, you are *Reducing displeasure.* Why are you putting on your slippers? To make your feet warmer. *Pleasure.* Why are you brushing your teeth? Because otherwise your teeth would feel weird. *Reducing displeasure.* Why are you going for a run? Runner's high. *Pleasure.* Why are you playing a video game? *Pleasure.* Why are you donating to charity? Because helping others makes you feel happy. *Pleasure.* Some activities have many different chains of reasons, but they all end with "to increase net pleasure" anyway. For example: Why are you going to work? - To make money > money to increase financial security > security reduces stress > *to prevent displeasure* - To make money > money to spend on entertainment > *to increase pleasure* - Because of societal pressure > betraying societal pressure would make me uncomfortable > *to prevent displeasure* - Because I am sentenced to community service > I will be punished if I don't show up > *to prevent displeasure* - Because my work is beneficial to society > I feel guilty if I don't show up > *to prevent displeasure* - Because my work is beneficial to society > I feel happy that I am helping others > *to increase pleasure* Harry's argument that pleasure is a distraction from productivity is entirely nonsensical. Productivity is nothing outside of simply being a means to increase net pleasure-- for yourself or for society. In a world where everyone is 100% productive and takes no time off for pleasure, what would they be working for? What is the point in furthering society, if none of the participants can enjoy the fruits of their labor?

We are basically hard-wired to feel satisfaction from doing things that we perceive as useful or pleasurable. For someone who is such a staunch advocate of reaching humanity's full potential, I feel like Harry often seems to forget the fundamentals that got us where we are and keep us going. Pleasure rewards our efforts. It rewards us feeding ourselves, it rewards us keeping ourselves and others safe, and there is an obvious reason for why sex is enjoyable (to most). Of course it can go haywire. Anything in excess is bad. However, dismissing such a fundamental part of our nature is foolish at best.

@@BlindBosnian Fair, I guess there is much to credit with these and other videos in the variety of means of mental stimulation (which doesn't negatively impact you like pornography, drugs, arguably sex itself). I disagree that nothing good is gained from sex, though. What exactly separates sexual pleasure from other pleasure? Pleasure isn't inherently bad, and though it can come into conflict with productivity, it can also work towards motivating productivity. It's a matter of balancing pleasure and productivity, I see no reason why sex can't be a part of that. Just because there are other means doesn't mean it's invalid. In addition, what if someone legitimately wants to raise a child and has the means of doing so? Granted, that may be a very small amount of people, and they could go for artificial insemination, but should they not be free to choose the natural means? The connection between lovers can be comparable to drugs, but really there is need of much more research on relationships and neuroscience before the conclusion that sex=drugs can properly be made.

Hello! I’m a human geographist and I’d just like to say that we aren’t facing Overpopulation right now. Without getting too complicated, the UK and the US are stage 4 countries. This means that our populations aren’t increasing much every year, and our population is healthy. Many Stage 2, and 3 countries need to go through the rest of the demographic transition model (We have no Stage 1 countries left), and they are the only ones facing overpopulation. More developed places like Copenhagen, Denmark are actually needing more people as they are a stage 5 country and need to fall back into stage 4. (In fact, places like Denmark try to advertise sex to younger generations. Just look up “Do it for Denmark). Our population is more likely to cutoff at 12-15 billion people, so what about we keep this misinformation to a low.

As someone who grew up with purity culture, I can tell ya'll right now that banning s3x not only does not work but it actually makes things worse. I know it's technically called abstinence (refraining from s3x until marriage) but the same principle applies. I won't get into it because I'm trying to keep my comments short (I always make long comments on these videos and I apologize for that) but basically here in conservative America, people are simultaneously so obsessed and shameful for s3x it's ridiculous; it even ruined the lives of some of my friends and family members. I do agree that people think that having s3x is supposed a must and you're a loser if you don't partake is stupid but the other solution is just as bad, if not worse. People need to understand that you can have a balance; if you need to scratch that itch, then do it and if don't want s3x then society shouldn't shame you for it.

Also, it’s directly shown that talking about sex and sexuality as a multi-faceted thing actually help people not have as much sex, maybe because it removes the mystique, maybe because it helps people plan for when they want to have sex and where they want to have sex with. I would argue that having sex CAN actually build useful skills. Being “succesfull” in bed requires communication. Explaining your own likes and dislikes, and being a good listener, etc. This stuff becomes even more important when it comes to things like BDSM, where clearly articulating your needs and limits is essentially a *requirement*. Those are skills that definitely benefit your professional life. It’s not unheard of for succesful men to visit dungeons to submit to a professional domme. This is something that requires self reflection, and can lead to self improvement too, as the social skills used to negotiate with a dominatrix, can be one and the same as when negotiating a bussiness deal for example. Being so open about everything builds confidence, too. Being confident enough to clearly state what you want is a very important skill in my opinion. There’s plenty of science about sex improving focus and productivity too, obviously. But I’m pretty sure that that’s common knowledge.

They predict we won't hit 9 billion until 2040 (longer than it took to hit 8 billion!), and even ignoring that, population decline is a seriously discussed problem in many first world countries with birth control (and as birth control use and sexual education increases, population growth slows down at a tremendous rate). Seems like overpopulation might be an issue that solves itself with enough time - I'm more worried about how we might mismanage our resources before we reach that point.
