Yes, the $20 trick is a total ruse, propagated by Vegas insiders and influences because it supplements the wages of hotel staff, many of whom they know. Just dress well and look the part when you check in. As often as not, they'll take the initiative and offer you something. Or ask them what options there might be for an upgrade. This all works well, especially for mid-week stays. If they do something special for you, tip them afterwards. But don't just slide a twenty across the desk before you've even made eye contact. Honestly, Travel Ruby must take her subscribers as fools.

I’ve worked in the hotel industry for 15 years, though not in Vegas, and I have to say that I find bribes insulting. A tip after a pleasant interaction is much appreciated, but when someone hands me $20 and asks for something in return it feels gross. Especially when I can’t help them and then I feel awkward accepting the tip. I turned down a $100 because I couldn’t help someone and it felt wrong to take it. Just ask nicely and tip as a thank you.

As a lifelong resident of nearby LA, I just stay away from Vegas, everything is way too expensive, the quality of service has diminished, and I'll just stay home and walk around LA if I want to see and smell drugs, homeless, street performers, etc. All of Vegas is freakishly overrated, it's nice to go once in a while, other than that, NO from me.

Agree with Bellagio. We never stayed there and did for a night in January. Room was nice but…too many people, everywhere and dragging luggage from the front desk to the room through the crowds. We usually gamble there in the mornings when it’s a bit quieter but will pass staying there again.

I’m in a similar boat with Bellagio: Wife and I stayed last October and it was fine. Love gambling/spending time at the conservatory and fountains (I’ve also always found the Starbucks by the Caesars/Horseshoe walkways to be pretty quick too), but for the price point there’s better options.

I appreciate hearing other perspectives, and I respect the opinions of others. Just a few points that we differ in opinions, and I will share our different perspective, respectfully, as you did. Smoking- is smoking dumb? Yes, but we enjoy it in Vegas. We are annoyed by the weed smell, but it it what it is. Our response is “but it’s Vegas”, as you said. It’s called Sin City for a reason, and it is the final respite for those who still do it. Thank you for calling out the $20 trick, you said it perfectly. The only other perspective that I will add is that we do fly in, and we always rent a car because I get an amazing discount through my job. We’d pay way more to use ride share or taxis. We typically grab one per trip because we want to drink wherever we are going. We like going off strip since we’ve been several times now and use the car a lot. The 6X $18 a day is money we could add to our food/gambling/souvenir budget. We enjoy your videos so much, thank you!

I am here for this one! Agree about center strip, buffets, bonus drinks, and the Bellagio. We come to Vegas 2-4 times per year and lately divide up our stay between a MGM property, downtown, and a locals casino. We love the variety of experiences we get. Never apologize for your opinions, you are Vegas experts. I do like to bet live at Circa or South Point, because I just enjoy the experience. Thanks for another great video.

Our favorite locals casino to stay at is Southpoint. The rooms are spacious and very clean. They have 11 restaurants to choose from, including a great steakhouse. The staff is great, good security when late night gambling. The sportsbook is really nice. We tend to win more at slots when gambling local vs the strip. They give you a coupon book at check-in full of free drinks, and food deals. They have a great movie theater, bowling and bingo. Overall, it is a nice break from the strip's prices and it is all in one place.

The worst rip off/overpriced restaurant that’s just a big gimmick is that Salt Bae place! Talk about a total gimmick and rip off. Just because he has salt running off of his sweaty arm onto the piece of meat you are about to eat??!! Gross! His prices are high. For what?! Would rather eat at InNOut burger! With no one using their sweaty arm to roll off salt onto my burger! Why anyone pays to go into one of his places I don’t know! What a waste of money.

People like me who have been coming to Vegas for 30 years get fired up as you say over parking and other things because Vegas use to be a place for gamblers. We got cheap eats affordable rooms free parking everywhere cause we were gambling. Problem now we still gamble but the perks have gone away. Just because paid parking exist in other places does not make it ok for Vegas to do it. You need to remember what Vegas use to be and have experienced old vegas to understand how much of a rip off it is now. JMHO

I might add another comment before I come to the end of the video. I truly enjoy all of your videos. Before I forget, here is my take on 'free drinks'. I live in Ontario, Canada. My local is Woodbine Race Track and they have just opened up a brand new casino/resort which is connected, but called Great Canadian Casino and Resort that now has a hotel attached and is about 10 minutes by uber from the airport. I have the same gripes with finding servers, but just so you know here we pay for our wine/spirits (pop/coffee is free). So every time I want a wine it will cost me here a bit less than 10 dollars Canadian. Definitely not bonus drinks no matter how much I am betting, how much money I have gone through. So I am looking forward to going to Seneca Niagara (in NY) for a couple of days this coming Thursday where free play is better and drinks are free. Just wanted you to be aware that I do look at it as free drinks at Seneca and in Vegas where we are booked right after Christmas to come (Venetian) because we pay for any drink we might want here. :) Thanks for your great content.

I'm going to get bad feedback from this but if i go to Vegas on vacation i should not have to waid through the homeless people on the strip. People are spending a lot of Money there and if you have been yelled out or hassled by them you get tired of it or scared you think those billion dollars hotels want them out in front of them. 10:45 Arts District is EXTREMELY OVER-RATED! If you have nothing better to do, then maybe go to a bar or restaurant there ONE night ONLY just to check out the vibe. But during the day time, it is a complete WASTE of time and boring as hell. Don't bother. The stores and restaurants really aren't that special. I thought it was pretty lame. Don't get your hopes up and don't set your expectations very high. I also think Area 15 is VERY over-rated. A lot of the exhibits there are not worth the money.

Hi, good content. I know enough Vegas to see you’ve got your chops. On your view regarding staying on the Strip. I see your point, but, consider this. I’m renting four rooms in early September for seven people. By staying at Golden Nugget I saved about $1,000. With one quick Uber ride we can be unloading at Bellagio in about the same amount of time it would take a couple to walk there from Paris. And from that point, exploring the center strip is just as easy for me as it is for anyone staying center strip. I just have a bit more money in my pocket. Don’t get me wrong. We love Cosmo, Aria was beautiful when we stayed, Paris was okay, NYNY was fun; but for bargains downtown is still typically your best bet.

Great video guys. And I agree 100 percent on the people who get excited over getting "free" stuff in Vegas, while losing thousands of dollars pretty much every single trip. And there are people I know, who make frequent trips, just to get higher "status" with a particular casino group. They get all excited over a comp at a fancy steakhouse, yet lost thousands of dollars in the casino. Of course they will get everything comped. Limos, suites, meals, etc. These casinos aren't stupid. They just keep offering these people all the freebies and "free play", as long as they will keep coming back. People want to feel special, and get treated like a VIP, just so they can brag about it, post it on social media, etc, when in reality, the casino hosts just want their money.

Great video! I’m in total agreement with much of what u said, particularly what Josh said about the Bellagio being overrated. Hard to find a quick grab & go, as you’re not going to feel like a full meal every meal. We stayed in a suite with the best fountain views but there was nothing special about the room itself. Often times spend way more on losing at my slot machine while waiting for my drink. I like Park MGM because of the no smoking policy as well … it’s the cigars that bother me most & this is coming from a former smoker. Yup, the gold leaf or truffles do nothing except drive up the cost. We also much prefer taking a cab from the airport vice ride share as well - it’s much faster and pricing equal to ride share. We enjoy staying at the Aria, Venetian/Palazzo, Mandalay/ Delano on strip, Orleans off strip, and Golden Nugget downtown. Hope to run into you both one day in Vegas!

I had a $300 drink at the Bellagio one time! Agree, I've never tried the $20 trick, but whenever I ask for a complimentary upgrade, I usually get one. Agree with you that it's dangerous on the strip. It was a real hardship for me last trip. I am bound to a scooter for health reasons so I have to use the elevators at the crosswalk bridges, and have woken up more than one homeless person sleeping in the elevator. Sorry, but I disagree about the smoking, and I'm a 50-year smoker who is trying to quit! But when I go to Vegas, I want my cigarettes with my alcohol whenever I am playing the slots or table games. It's my vacation and one of the draws of Vegas is that it's one of the last places you still CAN smoke. I still love to stay at Bellagio just for the fountains and conservatory. I agree 100% that they need more mid-cost dining choices. I've been stuck more than once where I just wanted something regular to eat and had to go over to the Cosmo. And I never go downtown anymore! Too dangerous. Haven't been to container park but have no desire to, either. Also never go to the Speakeasy's. I also don't need the cavier, gold or truffles. No desire for the gondola ride either. I laugh watching the high rollers throw thousands into the slots that are "DUE" to hit. I just sit there and think, OK, they've gambled for 5 minutes on what would have been my daily allotment for slots! Totally with you on Uber or Lyft. I'm not walking a mile to get a ride for the same as I'd pay a taxi anyway! So I guess I agree with all of your views except for the smoking! And that's just because I'm a diehard. Enjoy your videos!

Great video guys! I agree with pretty much everything you mentioned. The one I actually disagree with is the $20 trick. We may be in the minority on this one, but we’ve had a lot of luck with this over the years. The one thing that has held true in Vegas over the years, especially lately, is that “money talks. When you combine being friendly with the front desk agent, along with a chance for them to make some easy money, it usually results in a nice upgrade for us. Again, I’m sure there are different results for everyone, and that’s ok. Either way, keep up the good work. Cheers!

Hey guys I totally agree we’ve been going once a year for the last 17 years and we’ve seen big changes. The biggest change is the resort fee. We fly from Scotland and book our holiday with a travel agent after you’ve payed for your holiday they come up with this oh by the way you have resort fees of $49.95 plus taxes at the hotel upon check in. Our last stay was June 22 and we stayed at the Venetian for three weeks it cost us $1100 extra what a downer on the holiday if it’s your first time. We already planned for this but just add it to the room it won’t be noticed then. Our room tax was more than the room price crazy. Yeah we agree with celebrity chefs far to many , I was a smoker and I always hated smoking on casino floor it felt like you had this cloud over your head, go outside it’s warm enough and quite nice to people watch, we done the Gondolas and you could feel the motor vibration plus the price has shot up for a ten minute ride. Taxis are our must to from the airport you can ask the driver how much to this hotel or that hotel and they are only a dollar more or less,we have always taken taxis and still find them better than Ubers etc, for us anyway. Really like your videos only just seen you on you tube very informative. Sadly this Christmas will be our last trip to vegas as we feel it’s out pricing itself and the money people are getting greedy. Hey good thing is you still have some beautiful places for us to visit. Got a bucket list to tick off only a third ticked lol.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Free drinks on the casino floor while your playing a slot machine yeah, but if you play video poker at the casino bars you get drink service right away, the only thing is that some casinos are getting stricter about this by requiring minimum $1 hands and limiting certain drinks comped. But I live in Vegas and I only play when I want free drinks and it works great lol.

"Free" drinks, gold on food, buffets, container park, gondolas, bellagio (the crowds!), smoking, slot "experts" (aaargh), celebrity chefs, speakeasies (I did enjoy mob museum one because they had a killer band)...pretty much all of it I try to avoid, or at least won't seek out. "Bonus Drinks" is spot-on. And I will add that, if you are thinking of taking your money out of a slot machine but want to wait until your drink arrives, just take the money out. I guess for me I have used the machines to place my bet more often than the counter for the past two years, lines go faster and easier to make parlays for me. If they had more seating I could get behind it but lots of large casinos still have little to no open public seating on an NFL Sunday which is when I would want to do this. Whaaaz up Peeps ! I’ll say I agree with many of these . I get all my suites comped so never bother with the $20 trick nonsense. Sometimes I get a drink at the slots but mostly no. On the mid strip I agree that it’s a bit rougher on the side by Harrah’s to before Paris and I’m not a fan of most Caesars properties anyway . I normally stay at Bellagio (so definitely disagree with Josh on that one)or Aria but I do sometimes stay at Wynn or Mandalay Bay . I hardly ever go to a buffet. Prefer the upscale restaurants instead . Sorry it’s been awhile since I commented. Broke my dang ankle so having a rough summer . Can’t wait to get back to Vegas . You crazy kids are awesome 😎 😎😎

My biggest complaint is how expensive it is now! Especially those damn overrated buffets! Restaurants! It’s insane. It seems like so many of the hotels there are just trying to get as much as possible from each person. It was always like that but now it’s much more. Worse. With less and less concessions. Comps. Wow. Lots to unpack here. First, I disagree. Mid strip is still awesome and yes, there are issues there, but it doesn’t diminish the experiences and location of those properties. Even as a single woman I enjoy walking there and although it’s not the best sight, no one ever bothers me. Next, smoking. I am a smoker, I don’t care if they section the casino but ultimately I like the option to smoke in the casino and I do try to be respectful but I prefer that they keep it. Even when I’m not smoking, I don’t mind it. Following is sports book, people like to be in a community and want to partake in those events socially, so obviously it makes sense that there would be these areas. I never bet on that but I get it. And yes, free parking 100% does affect us as drivers into Vegas, and many people rent cars. The room rates and fees are ridiculous, they absolutely should offer free or reduced parking for guests. They did free parking before, and now they are simply taking advantage of drivers staying at those properties. If an event is in town okay, but for guests it’s exorbitant. Bellagio is whatever, never going out of style for the location; adding “affordable” options would diminish its luxury status so obviously they’re not going to do that. Agree with you on speakeasys. Then, money grabs are all over even if there are no gold flakes; it’s so sad how expensive everything is. Crazy times. Venetian gondolas- some people may never get to go to Venice like you guys, not an authentic experience but still valuable for some. Dude Tao has been a restaurant and club forever, it’s Vegas. Choose a different restaurant or deal. Anyway sorry long comment but you guys asked for it! Sometimes gotta take Vegas less seriously and just enjoy the moment.

My take on the Free Parking... We used to rent cars often on our vegas trips...we liked going to all the different hotels by car....and if we didn't like a place, no biggie... off to the next. But now that most properties charge for parking... we rarely rent a car anymore... and don't visit as many casinos as we don't want to pay for parking for every place we go. Feel like it's just another 'perk' that Vegas used to have, that is gone.

You cannot beat watching a big game in a sportsbook or making one bet on a horse race and receiving an actual free drink ticket. The sportsbooks are a vibe. I might only go to Vegas once a year (all the way from Australia), but you made some awesome points on this. The smoking situation - we need distinct areas. Over half the people now don't smoke, we need that fresh air. What we have done is Australia is have large smoking areas that are sectioned off and with open windows or air vents. The smell is so much better! Bellagio is overrated - first visit was a disappointment. Fountains and conservatory were the highlights, but the casino floor was chaos. Cosmo is better. Mid strip is also overrated in terms of the prices compared to what you get room wise . Preferring the likes of Luxor and Mandalay Bay now, both cheaper, have wider variety of offerings, and also make sense if going for shows at the arena (as I tend to). Celeb restaurants - I am guilty BUT as a single person dining alone, many of them won't take my reservations to start with and/or won't let me order the 3 or 4 course set menu. I also don't fancy paying $40-80 for a average beef wellington or fish and chips that feels churned out, in comparison to something unique or reasonably priced AND delicious. So yes, I like my Jose Andres, but no to Ramsay. Nor do I go to buffets. I like fresh meals and I am unlikely to eat enough to make the $$$ on buffets worthwhile. I haven't indulged much on the free alcohol nor speakeasy front. Ultimately looking for an experience. Looking at doing the mob museum with a local friend next time though.

I’ve never had a “crime” happen to me there. 4. The $20 trick will only embarrass you. Lol. 5. The “free” drinks are usually watered down. 6. I ❤ the Bellagio. ❤❤❤ It is NEVER overrated. Stay there and go down to the conservatory late into the night/early morning to take pictures. Plus, the pools are beautiful. The rooms are plush too.

Thank you, seasoning for us is a major issue with Buffets because they are seasoning for the masses like a random wedding dinner, typically things are either bland or over salted, but no aggressive Mexican or Asian flavors, not talking just salt and pepper. Thanks so much for watching and sharing. The Bellagio pools are fantastic for sure. The biggest things for me are that the basic rooms are too basic for the price tag and the fact that it serves as a giant throughway for foot traffic up and down the strip overcrowds what is supposed to be a very luxurious hotel

All too true! Since I rarely drink, I just bring a Fiji water or a Starbucks iced tea with me when I hit the slots. I don’t attempt the $20 trick because I book a very specific room type (ADA Accessible) to accommodate my brother, and having the folding chair in the shower is more important to us then a Strip view or a higher floor. The center Strip is greatly overrated! It’s gotten to the point we only venture on the West side of the Strip from NY-NY to Bellagio, with an occasional exception to dine at Paris. The tram from Park MGM to Bellagio is a godsend, and the new walkway from Cosmopolitan that will connect to Vdara and Bellagio will be helpful as well, once it opens. Speaking of Bellagio… it’s still nice, and I love playing at their casino, exploring the Conservatory (at 6:30am) and dining at Sadelle’s. But you are right, it’s not worth staying there. FYI, I heard that they are keeping the bathtubs as part of the Spa Tower room renovations, not sure if they’ve finished that yet. My parents used to love the various buffets, but my brother and I just don’t go to them anymore. Probably the only one I would consider revisiting is Wynn, but we rarely venture to that part of the Strip anymore. Ah, my biggest pet peeve… smoking! That cancer-causing, filthy, disgusting smoke! I don’t care what other people want to indulge in, as long as I’m not affected. Once I was playing in a nonsmoking section at Bellagio, and in the space of one hour had to stop half a dozen smokers from lighting up at that bank of machines. 😠😡🤬🥵 I really wish more casinos would go nonsmoking, but until then Park MGM gets about 75% of my slot play. I live in a state where sports betting is illegal, so I don’t bother with the betting apps. My brother loves visiting the sports book, he gets enthralled with the large TV screens showing a variety of games. I do like the kiosks, they are easy to use. It is rather fun to listen to a huge crowd cheering (or groaning, depending on their bets) a big play, especially with football. Good job with this topic!

With regards to smoking, one thing to consider is Vegas’s tie to cigar smoking. Cigars and Vegas go hand-in-hand, from the mob days to the present. In fact, the magazine Cigar Aficionado hosts their yearly “Big Smoke” event in Vegas (Resorts World is the host resort this year) each November, drawing not only cigar smokers but industry big-wigs as well (the heads of cigar makers such as Padron, Olivia, Fuente, etc as they host panels and seminars). Given this, while non-smoking options will continue to become more and more popular, it’s unlikely that smoking (and specifically cigar smoking) will be done away with completely. Vegas is in fact different from other cities in this regard. P.S.- The same reasoning-the unique history of Vegas- is why speakeasies are as popular as they are. And yeah while there may be more and more of them, the reason is simple: to both take advantage of people’s obsession with the mafia and their desire to feel the raw history of Vegas.

On the smoking side, there are two good tiki bars in Vegas that I go to. Frankies and Golden Tiki. Golden wins out for me now as its non smoking. I prefer the dive atmosphere in frankies, I love their drinks, but it just smells too much like smoke constantly. So I only go to Golden now. I don't believe in smoking laws, but I do prefer when I am in a non smoking environment.

Funny cus Golden Tiki is without a doubt the worst, they forgot to take their charging cable out of my drink!

@@dobees8183 I have never had a bad experience there. I think the drinks are better at Frankies but not by enough to justify the smoke. Frankies is a lot more affordable though so if I was a local and going often it might win. But for a vacation I'll pay a bit more.

You missed Wynn as overrated. It’s a nice hotel but as you said about Bellagio, you can say about the Wynn.
@JoshRachael
@JoshRachael Жыл бұрын
I guess I would disagree on some of that comparison. Overpriced for the basic room, yes but the big difference for me is that Bellagio is a giant throughway where people are constantly walking thru. If I’m staying at a “Luxury Property” I don’t want constant foot traffic muddying up the majority of the walking paths. Wynn being at the end of the strip certainly helps with that but they also don’t feature things like the Fountains or Conservatory that draw in the masses. It’s more understated elegance I guess. Thank you for sharing!

My favorite celebrity chef is Ray Kroc. He use to be in and around the casinos in the 80's and 90"s but not so much anymore.

As a an off smoker I really enjoyed the fact that I could smoke without walking 30 minutes to get to a smoking point in my states current casinos...if vegas goes this route there is no reason to go there...gambling,dining,room rates are much cheaper at local tribal casinos...and those are spread out throughout all of america.

Have to disagree about staying on the strip. Fremont is old Vegas, with it's own unique things to offer. Also for the budget conscious visitor, a little smaller room, but for a much lower price.

Fremont is good but we meant that to target those who basically never go or first timers. Fremont has some great qualities

When I was young and coming to Vegas sitting at a slot machine and feeding it nickles for "free drinks" was actually cheap and fun. Drink service came around 10X faster back then and I'm not exaggerating. Also when you are feeding change in a machine it goes much slower so they were not free but much cheaper than now. Its a joke now. With TITO and cash I have actually burned thru $200 while waiting for a drink and was only betting $3 a spin. I just go to the lounge or bar now and pay $20 for a good drink.

I have to agree with 100% of everything you said! Ive been to Vegas well over 100xs and you are 100% right. (BTW) we went to Catch recently and ordered the truffle sashimi... and they took off the caviar, but kept the price the same.. so there's that)

I still argue they are free drinks in Vegas because basically every other casino in any other state or country you definitely pay. So even if you have to wait, i'd say its still free if you're gambling anyways. But yes, anyone who gambles just for the free drinks are definitely not getting free drinks. I'm speaking as a gambler though who pays insane prices for drinks at all other casinos haha. Also, I find if you play the tables the waitresses come much more often. Slot players are more spread out and don't always have money to tip, table players are all in one spot and will have cash or chips to tip with so more tips and easier to serve. Also south strip like Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay is kind of a graveyard. Personally i never go farther south than MGM/NYNY. But ignoring that area I agree its nice Paris down to Park MGM. Good review though, agree with majority! (and only slight comments on the two others lol)

I can understand that point for sure. I think it’s more pointed to the old style of Vegas tips videos that used to say just play ten dollars and get drinks all day.

Those gold flakes are 35 cents each on Amazon. You won’t have a good time at the bellagio if you’re not willing to pay for more than you get, really. You will be bored and the rooms are dull. We always use taxis, they are so convenient they are worth the extra couple of bucks. I’ve never been to a speakeasy, I would hate spending my trip time looking for one just to find it full. I also think fremont is overrated, but I loved the zip line. It’s too loud to talk. The 20 dollar trick feels patronizing, just ask. I would’ve said the same things, you read my mind. The street performers coming up behind people is a really bad idea. I can’t stand center strip, but people won’t really feel satisfied unless they try it once. Great list!!!
