@@bradycall1889 , previously I also thought that Gigli was overrated, but now I don’t think so. Despite his mannerisms and vulgar sighs, there are many recordings where Gigli gives the greatest artistic effect and sends shivers down my spine. Fair enough on the way you described the singers in this specific video. I respectfully disagree on Shakira because she's quite good. She may have some flaws in her technique when you listen closely enough, and admittedly she's not really my cup of tea, but she has lots of talent and it's understandable why she's so popular. Well I also don't understand why Monaco was underrated.... He's literally a legend. One singer I think was underrated is Franco Bonisolli. He's a good tenor but he's called Il Pazzo (the mad one). I think he was busy showing off his HighCs so ignored any artistry to the point where he seemed to have gone mad. But in terms of vocals he was excellent. Also the issue with the Three Tenors is that the commercial practices have brought them fame and fortune. So people would think "Oh No there are other much better singers, and how come they are not so famous as the Three Tenors?" Hence the word "overrated". But they are all good tenors.

@@bradycall1889 If you are talking about some specific recordings, I agree that Monaco was underrated in some performances, mostly lyric roles. He had such a huge voice that people only remember him as Otello while forget about his lyric roles. Here's a live recording of Monaco's Un ballo in maschera, which I really like kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3qZimZ3m8iKbKc Also Monaco as Duca in Rigoletto kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHXFY56emqaVZsU&pp=ygUPbW9uYWNvIGxhIGRvbm5h Well I might get lots of hate for saying this, but Monaco sounds weird if the role is too lyrical. For example, he was just weird in pourquoi me reveiller. Not the right voice for the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bauzdJinYrCZac0&pp=ygUcbW9uYWNvIHBvdXJxdW9pIG1lIHJldmVpbGxlcg%3D%3D Also lots of people love Monaco's baritone singing, but I think he's medicore in those baritone roles at most. He was struggling with the coloratura in Largo al Factutom and had difficuties in keeping up with the ochestration because his voice was too heavy. His Pagliacci Prologue was not very impressive either. As for Corelli, he's certainly not overrated nor underrated. He's a great tenor but because he's great, we always say he's fantastic while some of his roles are really just not very impressive. Corelli's voice was too distinct, with that kind of deep sorrow in it. He was great in those tragic roles that require big voices, such as Cavaradossi, Ramirez, Radames, or Andrea Chenier. His un di all'azzurro spazio was WOW!!!! I will never have enough of it. Another version I absolutely love comes from Monaco (as always lol). kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3LbkoKvfqZ8ibs&pp=ygUgY29yZWxsaSB1biBkaSBhbGwnYXp6dXJybyBzcGF6aW8%3D But while he was in those more lyric roles it's another story. Let's listen to his rendition of Duca's aria: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2PXhKB6eLKJqck&pp=ygUZY29yZWxsaSBsYSBkb25uYSBlIG1vYmlsZQ%3D%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXyrdX16f9KYmMk&pp=ygUXY29yZWxsaSBxdWVzdGEgbyBxdWVsbGE%3D Duca should be a "comedy" character with a lighter voice and Corelli was just not right for the role. He was seriously struggling with the cadenza in Questa O Quella. Anyway I am glad that he never took the role of Duca, nor Alfredo. Otherwise it would be hilarious. Also Corelli's rendition of La Fleur que Tu m'avais Jetee (Don Jose's aria from Carmen): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp3af4eNdrx5d68&pp=ygUmY29yZWxsaSAgTGEgRmxldXIgcXVlIFR1IG0nYXZhaXMgSmV0ZWU%3D Now let's listen to my bro Placido Domingo's rendition of the aria, and tell me how come Corelli is better than Domingo as Don Jose? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqqmmnWkhJaoqZY&pp=ygUQZG9taW5nbyBsYSBmbGV1cg%3D%3D Also Jon Vickers, a dramatic tenor with a huge voice, and yet he's much better in the role. Again I fail to understand why some people think Corelli is a better Don Jose than Jon Vickers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6WlYoiihaufpJY&pp=ygUUam9uIHZpY2tlcnMgbGEgZmxldXI%3D And unfortunately this is true for many other great singers. Another example would be di Stefano. He's great but I failed to understand why so many people consider his rendition of E Lucevan le Stelle as a textbook. His voice was not right for the role. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXqVi6p9eqmEhZo I am not even going to mention Corelli or Domingo's rendition (who were both spinto tenors), let's listen to Jose Carreras, another lyric tenor, singing the aria, and tell me how come Stefano was better than Carreras in this aria? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJLbeoaFhbuNpqs Well I just realized that I was ranting a lot again. What I want to say is that I appreciate your valuation for a specific performance or a role instead of a singer as a whole. It seems that people think if they are great, they are great in everything, which is not true.

Bonisolli was certainly miles ahead Domingo, but he did lack a certain finesse, against other lyric spinto tenors, he also didn't have a lot of squillo. That is a problem I see a lot. A lot of lyric spinto tenors do not have the finesse of their older counterparts such Giacomo Lauri Volpi or Mario Filippeshi. Today also you will find Martin Meuhle, he is really one of the only decent tenors around, but as a lyric spinto he does lack that certain finesse of older singers. Still he is great, people should go and see him if they have a chance. Or Monslave that is listed here is another example of a lyric spinto tenor without much finesse. It is still a lyrical voice, there should be a bit of finesse.

I consider MdM overrated. He was very good but I wouldn't say he was one of the best tenors of all time. He was incredibly loud, and a good actor, but his voice was not especially beautiful. Regarding Pavarotti, he kept his voice in good condition, but I felt that in pursuit of money he sang repertoire which did not bring out the best results. For example I don't think his Nessun Dorma is very successful. Regarding Florez, I feel that the problem is that he has a small voice which is also very high. I'm not quite certain how you are using the terms "overrated" and "underrated". In my book "Reflections from the Audience" I use the term "overrated" to mean tenors whose fame exceeds their merit as singers, even though they may otherwise be fine artists. Thus, I list my favorite tenors, Gigli, Bjorling, Corelli and Malchior. I think all four of them are justly revered as great tenors. My three choices for "overrated" are Martinelli, Tucker and especially these days, Pavarotti. The almost God-like devotion of some to Pavarotti astounds me, a veteran of hundreds of Corellii performances. For me Pavarotti couldn't come near Corelli. But, of course, this is a a very subjective issue. Thus I admit that my major criteria for judging the singing voice is the timbre of the voice and I don't particularly care for Pavarotti's timbre (ditto Martinelli and Tucker), while I find the timbre of my four favorites beautiful. Yes, I know I am comparing lyric and dramatic tenors together, but if your criteria is the basic sound of the voice that doesn't matter.

Schipa exemplifies a problem I have with some older tenors ,they are often seen through rose tinted glasses. We don't have full recordings of them, and people were not walking around checking every note that they sang, standards were more lax in certain areas in those days. Schipa traveled with a suitcase of transposed scores. Corelli sang much better high notes then Schipa with a dramatic voice. That being said, no I don't think it matters when it come to the enjoyment you get from singer, these details only matters if you are comparing tenors against each other. A tenor doesn't need high C notes, but as a leggero tenor, it is certainly more important then it is for the other tenor types. But Schipa had a very nice voice, I was just listening to him yesterday, I do enjoy him a lot, but people see him and some other older tenors through rose tinted glasses. I don't think Gigli is overrated he is really the only light lyric tenor that could somewhat competently sing some heavy repertoire. That makes him more versatile then Mario Del Monaco. If anything Gigli is underrated against other light lyric tenors such as Bjorling, Pavarotti and Di Stefano. Michael Syres is fine when he when he sticks to being a leggero, he is nowhere to close to baritenor as he claims. He is going down a very bad path there. He does seem to be getting a lot of PR, he does not seem underrated to me. Of course we always have to ask ourselves how many times can Nessun Dorma be butchered, with a microphone. I don't think anyone here is underrated (well perhaps only Ramon Vinay), if I think about underrated singers I would say Joseph Schmidt, he had an incredible voice but he died very young. My other choice would be Kurt Buam, people seemingly dislike his voice a lot of Callas fans also dislikes him because he challenged her, but he could actually sing very well.

@@tecnicaantica "Pal" is something I say to random people on the internet all the time it's just a habit. Depends on what your definition of a "pal" is but I will stop calling you that if you'd like I'm okay with that. So I like Beniamino Gigli but people tried shoving how much they loved him down my throat when I simply said that my favorite operatic tenor was Mario Del Monaco (he's my favorite sounding tenor, but the one with the best technique and knowledge about singing in my opinion is Franco Corelli). It just got annoying when people said, "No, Beniamino Gigli is the greatest operatic tenor." They also complained to me about Pavarotti being the greatest instead of Del Monaco. But I admit as someone who's annoyed by many Beniamino Gigli lovers that Gigli is one of the greatest lyric tenors in recorded history. I admit, as much as I am a fan of Bocelli and as much respect I have for the man, you're right about some things. Bocelli was always too weak for an opera singer, I admit that, but he used to have a stronger voice than he does now. Even back then, admittedly, he wasn't strong enough for the opera house. He has occasionally gone to the opera house before and did alright, but it wasn't ideal and he didn't go to the houses often because he wasn't resonant enough. He isn't "underrated" overall across the entire world he's actually overrated. I just said "underrated" because on the internet he's underrated and hated a lot. But yes, when it comes to everybody out there he is overrated and not a true opera singer. That's why I put "popera" instead of "opera" because "popera" is classical-crossover but not actual opera. You should know the difference to understand where I was coming from. I think that earlier in his career, though compared to true opera singers his technique wasn't very good, contemporary-wise he had pretty good technique in my opinion. He sounded very good when he was young. But by now his voice got extremely weak even compared to other contemporary singers and his high notes are extremely strained. I admit the reason I called Del Monaco and Melchior "underrated" is because I just see dramatic tenors as underrated in general. And some of the guys I also called "underrated" admittedly I do understand why people don't enjoy them as much, such as Michael Spyres. Some of these "underrated" singers do indeed have flaws. And the reason I called Tito Schipa "underrated" and Juan Diego Florez, who has a similar if not the same voice, "overrated" is because Florez has so much credit for being an interpreter for the tenore di grazia roles despite that he's not even close to as good as Schipa is. Schipa was celebrated in his time but is no longer celebrated as much anymore unfortunately. Yes give a list of tenors that you think are overrated and underrated (you can be brutally honest by adding some of my favorites to the "overrated" list as long as you're polite about it).

Ok, but what do you mean, where or for whom are they over- or underrated? for example gigli. Birgit Nielsson said that he was the singer with the richest spectrum of overtones and the most intense metal in his voice that she had heard, when she claimed that, and she had sung with the greatest as you know. He recieved the highest Sallery for a performance (especially at the met) in his time and this for a reason. Yes he could have sung with lower larynx, but the sensation of having him heard life must have been thrilling. Its said that he trained on the top of the ships (for not hearing im self in a room) by humming for gaining more overtones, while for example lauritz melchior trained with open mouth and beeing loud. If you say gigli is overrated concerning the asthetic of his voice on the recordings, thats to discuss. So from the technical aspect and in my opinion also in interpretation and musicality hes not overrated.. he inspired just like caruso did, many of the younger singers. why Pavarotti overrated? he is also a technique beast. He dedicated his whole life to his vocal thechnique and his life performances shall have been sensational. There will be only few tenors who wont study him.. Why is michael spires underrated? he has an incredible career and is an outstanding artist who creates the way of his career a big parts himself, because he has this crazy abilitiy of beeing able to sing different voice types. Also the domingo thing.. ok the acuti sections not there. But better a Faust without C as a C without Faust. he is one of the best actors in opera and compared to others his healthy thechnique anables him to still sing.. so many decades. Are you an addict of muscles and power? because of comparing pavarotti and del monaco.. different voice types. in art not everything is about obvious things and power, there are so many aspects. but you wrote in a comment, everything is just for fun for you. for me not a proper approach to the work of artists I think this over and underrated comparison is insulting and neglects so many aspects.

His passaggio teachings on KZbin are just plain confusing and the vocal exercises he does himself do not work in my experience. I had a much easier time singing along the vocal exercises of Tecnica Antica (aka Rafael Vazquez) whom in fact had vocal exercises for all male voice types not just tenors and his videos were more comprehensive.

what a bunch of nonsense. Media popularity, commercial success, reputation within opera world, different eras of media coverage, actual legasy and influence on opera art... all criteria are mixed up in order to serve your random view... Just stupid

@@bradycall1889 Yes, for there is no logic present, no consistancy, no any obvious criteria. U just call random singers overrated and other random singers underrated. It's not even an opinion of urs, coz a serious opinion is supposed to be based on some insight, logic, careful comparison. Ur video shows none of that.

@@eldar5470 Do I have to explain in detail why I put each singer into the category that I put them into?

@@bradycall1889 You don't have to do anything. It's just that without explanations - it is what it is - a bunch of random nonsence. And by the way - to call smb overrated due to excessive media coverage and other person underrated due to them being dead for the last 50 years... that's not fair to say the least. If u have a modern bel canto repertoir singer u consider overrated - well do the job, find another modern singer of the same repertoir u think is underrated and compare them, that would be interesting, logical and fair. Well-known does not = overrated long dead does not = underrated
