LOL, I had the same experience. I was told "This is the greatest game ever, bro". Because of that, I built up the game in my head, expecting to be floored the story. When I finished the game, I thought the story had a lot of "You just missed Sephiroph, also I'm actually your secret scientist uncle, who's also your mother's father's brother. Engarde!". I loved the materia, music, and the prerendered background. Sony's marketing budget for this game was insane, I think it may have been one of the biggest in gaming, at the time.

I have played FF6 at least 5 times. And the FF5, and the FF4 too. But FF7 felt too slow to me.

Wasn't a PS guy so I've never played it, but I agree the polygons and futuristic setting are a departure from what made the precursors on the (S)NES great. I've played through the first one on NES half a dozen times. The first one on SNES was really good, but I lamented the loss of being able to craft your own party (characters come and go per the script). Started part 3 on SNES and sort of lost interest, but I'm been feeling a compunction lately to pick it back up again and give it another try. Lastly, I've been mildly interested in the JP->US translations of the two follow-ons on the NES (part 2&3), but not sure I have the patience to plow through those.

3 on NES is really good but I think my favorite is 5 on Super Famicom. You would like that one a lot because you pretty much get to make your own party of characters and switch classes anytime you want.

I didn't get to play it. But I remember the tv ad where Cloud was hanging onto a train I think, while it was speeding away. And I was expecting something nicer for graphics. It also came after FFVI and that's a hard act to follow. How good is the remake though?

I think if FF7 had stuck with 2D and swords and sorcery, even if it was a better game to play, it definitely wouldn't have even been remembered, it would have just been another RPG from Japan and the JRPG genre would have grown big enough to have even gotten to play it

I agree 100% with your criticisms and ideas for FF7. Even though the game was so awesome I loved it so much, I was let down by the crap character graphics, and remmeber when u first goto the overworld? That wide drab overworld with zero textures loked so plain. I like my games colorful anbd eyes popping.

Definitely wasn’t my favorite but it was the FF that introduced tons of people to the series and RPGs in general for that matter. Gotta respect that.

Well consider if square had Pushed ff6 just as hard, RPG interest was already growing pre FF7 look at all the post 1993 rpg's that came to the SNES & Genesis the genre was heading to mass appeal in any case. Granted square was learning new hardware at the time but I feel like the direction and its influence on later titles in the series was a bad choice. Yes, it worked, but it worked despite being a lesser FF experience and those tons of people thought FF was about giant flashy weapons and FMV's, fast forward and now its an action game.

I just finished Magic Knight Rayearth for the Sega Saturn. In terms of its graphics it's aged much better. Ironically most Western publications didn't praise it's graphics back then, but games like it and Albert Odyssey have aged much better.

First of all I would like it known that overrated does not equal bad but I too agree that this game is probably the quintessential overrated game but that's more about how beloved it is to most of the community and not about its failings. I got it day 1 being a FF fan. I played the first on the NES and 2 and 3 (4 and 6 in Japan) on the SNES. I played this game and wasn't blown away. There were things I really liked but overall the graphics were muddy looking, I couldn't get into the story and Barrett just bugged the crap out of me. I HATE the material system and got bored. Didn't make it off disc 1. I thought, it's common in FF games to have lulls and boring parts, maybe it gets better so I got the official Prima guide......and still didn't make it off disc 1. I did finally finish it on my PS Vita and did appreciate the game more. For me, the bottom line is: that it's not the best game on the PS1, it's not the best FF game and it's not even the best RPG on the system (but I will give it the top 3).

Now I agree to some extent. I love the game and always will. For me above all it was the story that made it. Now of course, it is all a question of taste. But to be fair, about the graphics... I believe they were talking revolutionary about the level of detail of the redered background, but specially the cut scenes. When it came I haven't seen better cut scenes than these. But yeahr graphics were pretty much poor on that game besides of the cut scenes. Now They changed the system of armors, but they did have it. Many accessoris and body armor. I loved the Materia system. Pretty interesting. They changes stuff a bit and I found three instead of four pretty good. Thre is a better number too if you look it up in numerology. I did play all the other FF before 7, and to be honest none of them actually really got me. So in the end... it is just a matter of taste. Like the whole world raves about Avatar the movie and I hate it. Nothing good in that movie. And it's okay. I do like your points thought and they seem very valid even from an objective standpoint, very valid too. But it jus had a big impact on most people. I have a few friends that hated it. And I can understand them. It is not for everybody. But saying the story is really a stretch. From a writing perspective it is actually a masterpiece. And the fact of your three cds... come on man... that is whining to it's finest. I really do not see how that can bother someone. You just change each disc once.

Final Fantasy VI had a great following with great SNES graphics and sound, and high praise from VG critics at the time. Final Fantasy VII was low PS1 graphics with at least a great score (Nobuo U. is the king of VG music!), but the game somehow became the most popular of the franchise and started a new "scene" for it. You can say that about a lot of franchises as well... Highest of the beloved sprite games to Worst but most popular 'New Start' Zelda: a LttP -> Zelda: OoT Sonic 3&K -> Sonic Adventure Sonic SatAM -> Sonic-X Green Day's "Nimrod"* -> Green Day's "American Idiot" (though act'ly not bad, but def'ly a new scene)

Sorry Ed. I never gamed past the demo. All my friends were all about it. I told them keep up with Castlevania. Blood Omen came out. And then at the mall one day with the girlfriend the PS2 came home with me. It was a three week celebration. I wish Final Fantasy would of waited to PS2. I am glad Sony took there buisness elsewhere when Nintendo wanted to still make cartridges. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo. I sometimes think what would or could of happened if Sony and Nintendo would of stayed together. Keep up the great work Ed. Your entire community is looking forward to Contra Force.

I played FF VII for the first time in 2014 after completing FF VI on SNES. I was shocked at how bad it looked.. A huge step down in terms of beauty and aesthetics from VI.

I just wish the older games would stop getting the pixel remaster treatment while this one gets the best sucking. I really want Terra Branford to get the same treatment. So tired of the pixel remasters. Plus Final Fantasy II could get the same remake or something...

Based on your review, I’m not convinced you got very far or bothered to play it more recently for a genuine review - opinions can change over 20+ years. Graphics, I’ll give you - save for cut scenes and battle sequences. They were fantastic for the time and enjoyable still today. The complaint about weapons/armor/accessories is wildly untrue. Yes, you only get one per slot - but the variety available to the player once you get out of Midgar (and even more so in the thick of disc 2) opens up quite a lot. And they allow the player to shape each character as they see fit with the simplicity of the materia system. I came here looking to further develop my own critiques of FF7’s narrative (of which there are many holes and issues), and you’ve made nothing but empty points. “Too much reading”, “forgettable” - these things say more about your own laziness as a 12 year old than it does about the actual story. I don’t believe you even bothered to mentioned a single event in the story! If you’re looking for a well thought out video on FF7 - whether you love it or hate it - you’re in the wrong place.

We never had that on the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis. We just ate dirt. That's why Square was able to afford to make 6 earlier Final Fantasy games in the first place.

I COMPLETELY agree. I still prefer Phantasy Star to FF7; and obviously it's a totally subjective thing but TOTAL agreement on pixel art over simple polygons anyday, and I too prefer my fantasy to be unadulterated by science fiction and futurism, but as I said, if I DO want a futuristic science / fantasy mixture, I'll take any of the Phantasy Stars, particularly End of The Millennium.

Hate!!!! Dude you get soooooo!!! many points for this! This mirrors my experience with the game back in the day (i was a teenager too then) . The prerendered backgrounds were the Achillies heel for me. It felt like characters didn't fit into the world. I felt like I was playing on top of a drawing (which I was). The game should've been either full 2d or full 3d. Prerendered gfx.. blech. Three characters in combat sucked too! What I really hated is this became standard for so many RPG's in the psx era. Three never feel like a proper adventure party. The lackluster equipment choices and inability for characters to share weapons etc. After seeing the progression from FF1 - FF3 (US) and seeing FF7 I was like this is a huge step back. I still feel this way. I lost interest so much when i beat Sephiroth I didn't even realize he was the end of the game boss. and was like oh I guess I beat the game. In my opinion the game should looked like Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of fire 4, Full 3d backgrounds with slick 2d sprites that look like they fit into their world and aren't running on top of it. You never said it was a bad game, but I am. FF7 was the beginning of my exit from the series. I jumped back on for FF9 and never bought one since. Skip to the present, and its unrecognizable nowadays Square dumbed down the experience for wider appeal, and it worked, the game was massively popular, but for purists we all knew FF could do better than this.

Second half of FF7 is mediocre at best. The game’s story direction definitely went in a weird unsatisfying direction after playing as Cid. The story’s pacing wasn’t that good either after leaving midgar for the world map.

I came with an open heart to see your critiques regarding the game, but what I witnessed was 10 minutes of rambling without a single concrete criticism. Only on two occasions were there critiques that could be relevant, but they were not elaborated on and, despite being your opinion, they seem quite unfounded, such as when you talk about the futuristic theme and having too much story. None of that makes sense. Final Fantasy is not necessarily a medieval RPG, and it has always had a reasonable amount of story, even in the seventh installment. Nevertheless, you missed the opportunity to better develop your arguments; you merely mentioned some nonsensical points without explaining anything. Besides these two specific points (which I disagree with), you made baseless criticisms about the graphics, the fact that it's on 3 CDs (????), and the game's armor mechanics. You have to look at it with what FF7 accomplished. RPG's meant fuck all to the majority of gamers before FF7 came along. FF7 is solely responsible for the popularity of the genre whether you like the game or not and responsible for the wave of awesome RPG's we got after it. You could also say the same thing about the first Super Mario Bros. Does it look and control like shit to today's standards?, sure but we have to look at it within it's time frame and what it did for gaming.

Yes. Oh God yes it is. It isn't the best final fantasy. It isn't even the best RPG for that matter. That said tho, FF7 is a jack of all trades kind of game that anyone can get lured in and easily enjoy. That's the main reason behind its popularity. The fact that it was the first massively promoted 3D RPG in the west also helped a lot.
