Never heard of that type of grass seed or ever seen a seed in such a fine grain. Is that a native New Zealand grass seed?
@OmniGarage Жыл бұрын
Not native to New Zealand, native to East Africa. It's a tropical grass species and popular around costal areas. So I guess NZ is a good climate for it.

My neighbours have grown Kikuyu in their backyard. It's grown under our fence, and cost me a fortune trying to stop it. Thing is when it takes off, it's unstoppable. Neighbours nightmare.

Dig a small trench and put a garden bed border in and along the trench, so it can’t keep running into your lawn. I had the same problem
@Richard-qx6el Жыл бұрын
@@Tommytoolsqueezer we've tried everything, even putting down black plastic. This stuff grows wild in our estate, some people use it as a lawn. Roots go down very deep, so it pops up everywhere.

@@Richard-qx6el yeah I’m hearing you. I made my trench about 10cm deep, so the roots couldn’t run under the barrier. I have fescue lawn, so it totally overwhelms it if I allow it to get in there too much.
@Richard-qx6el Жыл бұрын
@@Tommytoolsqueezer it actually can look OK as a lawn if, as you say you control it. My neighbours have no idea, and have no borders.

Roundup stops it.

Can I mix tall fescue in with kikuyu for my kiwi lawn next spring?
@Caramellofellow Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thought I'd drop a comment because I've been thinking about doing the same. Tall fescue is often used to repair kikuyu or address shadier spots as the leaves look very similar. Note though, that fescue is a cool season clumping grass and kikuyu is warm season with runners, so it may alter how you work them during a reno etc.
@Tommytoolsqueezer Жыл бұрын
You can, but it’ll look shit in winter. Your Fescue will be green and your kikuyu will go brown and dormant. And the kikuyu will eventually take over anyway because it’s a runner

Over time the kikuyu with dominant it.

You never need to overseed kikuyu, it spreads ad fills in on its own via rhizomes and stolons.
@OmniGarage Жыл бұрын
I disagree. 1 year on and I still have spots were the seed didn’t germinate. Also if I top dress spots the birds eat the seed. The top dressing definitely needed covering by the dirt. The scarifying is probably the best thing you can do to the lawn. It removes thatch and dead weeds to help promote lawn growth.

The packet of seed shown here says that it is LM Berea .....not kikuyu seed....? Which seed did you use ?
@OmniGarage Жыл бұрын
Go to 2:24 onwards the packet says raw kikuyu.

Kikuyu is terrible to grow from seed. There was plenty of coverage already and it would spread very quickly by itself. Certainly faster than from seed..

Over seed kikuyu?😅There’s never been a bigger waste of time and money than over-seeding kikuyu known to mankind.Fert,water and sun and watch it spread.If you want it done quicker plug what you have into bare spots and top dress.
