Imagine if we, the people, sued TransDigm for inflating the cost of this part (and probably many others) that we, paid for, with our tax dollars. Imagine what kind of margins we, the people, could make back. Hmm, would that be tax deductible, considering that the money is already taxed when it was first taken from you? Questions...

Wrong. Cortez is incompetent in her approach to questioning. TransDigmn has nothing to do with insulin. They're not responsible for Congress' ineptitude in lowering the cost of drugs. They're not responsible for the government's approach to negotiating the price of a clutch. The government awarded TransDigm the contract to supply clutches because the government (not TransDigm) determined the company's price was fair and reasonable. TransDigm did not make that determination. When the government wants a unique part and the logistics tail to go along with it, but only wants a very limited number of those components, of course it's going to be expensive. Do you think TransDigmn is able to design, test, manufacture, repair and maintain a support structure to continually supply these parts, at no cost? There are massive overhead costs for TransDigm: facilities, manufacturing equipment, labor force, etc. The company is doing the job they were hired to perform. Sorry that it's on a very limited basis, but those were the government's requirements. There's no secret to how much the government pays the contractor. The government negotiated the price! If you have an issue with the cost, why aren't you asking the government's item manager to testify and explain why he/she pays what they pay for the part. They're spending the tax dollars! If Cortez hopes to make a meaningful and impactful change, she needs to get off her grandstand and start targeting the root of problems in a productive and sensible way. She needs to understand that it's not TransDigm's fault that people cannot buy insulin, it's the GOVERNMENT'S fault for not addressing root causes of the problems. Try reading the Federal Acquisition Regulation to being understanding only one root cause of the many problems associated with your rant. All Cortez is doing here is trying to win a popularity contest with her constituents while overlooking the deep rooted issues in the government's own acquisition regulations. Pathetic use of taxpayer dollars that fund her paycheck. Playing stump-the-dummy with a witness testifying in front of your committee is an embarrassing display of your Congressional power. Are you happy now? No, of course not. You feel more emboldened than ever to charge forward with more thoughtless questions in other committee hearings without doing your due diligence to more fully understand all sides of whatever issue you're addressing. RedondoBeach2 The article just posted also states that they weren’t being honest with prices. I agree that it’s the governments responsibility to negotiate fairly for the American people, but by exposing the company that was a path towards recouping funds. I’m sure the company didn’t want to lose the contract. I’d like to know who has the final say in purchasing these products and what relationships or kickbacks they have with the vendors. Republicans always say “how are you going to pay for it” when it comes to certain government programs. And ironically it’s the free market and competition which could help trim the fat of our budget - a policy that Republicans always stand behind rather than evil socialism. Yet they ignore their own ideology when it doesn’t suit them.

@@RedondoBeach2 If by conglomeration, you mean that they buy out all of their smaller competitors then sure, it's a conglomeration. and why do they buy out all their smaller competitors? Why so that when it comes time to bid on necessary parts, they don't have any competition. there are several articles in the past year that I've highlighted just how inefficient the current bid system is, especially because it allows larger companies with is there a competitors to jack up their prices, which then means that the government has no choice but to pay them because there is no free market in play. Spare your disdain for AOC, and whatever beef you have with her, and instead point towards the fact that she is the first person to put someone like this on the spot and ask those pointed questions which led to the reimbursement of the excess profits. And that's not even counting the deceptive business practices that this company I was using. Refusing to turn over cost analysis whenever they could? I have absolutely no idea why you're defending them. But you're shooting the messenger instead of listening to the message, and that's half the problem with this country right now.

@r.forrestblount9222
@r.forrestblount9222 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom. I did some research. The federal government does set the Cost Accounting Standards which are, of course, needed. The problem is that companies work around the edges and under the reporting limits of those parameters by splitting contracts, etc., so as not to expose their cost manipulations to government scrutiny, which results in absurd corporate profits in some, if not many, cases. This is what AOC specifically mentioned. I am thinking that no matter what the actual parameters set, each will have reporting limits where scrutiny can be avoided attached to it. Am I wrong about this?
@taocpa
@taocpa 5 жыл бұрын
R. Forrest Blount - since I did this work for several years as an accountant, I don’t ever recall splitting contracts. In many cases, if not all, the government set the limits on how much profit could be made as a percentage. The government can audit every aspect of a government contract. They certainly do in large contracts. In smaller contracts, it may not be worth the time. Let’s say some company is awarded a $600,000 government contract. The government won’t necessarily audit it since it’s too small unless they suspect something is not right. Tome and time again AOC’s staff, the ones who prepare these questions, want to make her look like the “populist” individual she claims. Time and time again, many of these questions are so loaded with hyperbole and factual errors, it’s hard to take them seriously. Unfortunately, that’s the nature of politics. Both sides will present “facts” that are spun to fit their narrative. That’s why I have a difficult time taking it seriously. It’s a circus sideshow.

Have you contacted your representative to let them know how you feel about the government paying what it does for clutches? If you haven't but you intend to, what background information do you have to indicate with certainty that the price is too much? Cortez certainly didn't give you that information. She doesn't know. She just knows that she feels like the price is too high. At the same time, she wants hire wages for the people making the clutches, better healthcare, better working conditions and more time off for maternity leave. She doesn't care to try and understand that even though the government want's to buy a very limited number of very unique clutches only used by the military, that there are costs associated with designing, testing, manufacturing, storing, repairing, and supplying these clutches to the military on a potentially years long basis. Imagine if you owned a business and a customer asked you to design a unique part but only wanted a small number of them but wanted you to also maintain that capability for years, maybe decades. Can you imagine what the costs would be for you to maintain a workforce capable for doing that, the machinery involved, special tooling, the overhead costs of the real estate, the annual taxes, etc? The company is not producing clutches on a large scale. Similarly, the Air Force bought less than 40 B-2 aircraft. I used to work for a Transdigm division. I can tell you all that I’m 90% confident Nick Howley lied in this video. He claimed that Transdigm won the contract for those parts in a competitive bid, with what would have been about 6-15 other potential suppliers. In reality what Transdigm probably did was, 1. Purchase the smaller business that was originally awarded the contract to manufacture those parts. 2. Retained the original company name so it isn’t obvious they are corporate owned. 3. Increased the prices on all of the company’s existed production parts by a substantial margin relying on the fact that second sourcing a part is very difficult for their existing customers, taking in some cases several years and astronomical fixed costs to procure and meet the qualification standards for the application. Having said this, Transdigm also doesn’t pay their employees competitive salaries. When your business strategy is buying out companies and jacking up prices, you don’t need tremendously experienced workers to win new business for you, making the resulting high turnover from under paying employees manageable. Nick is a giant scumbag to say the least.

But where they really nickel and (Trans)Digm you is on those non-vehicular clutch disks! I would have to pass on those, personally. Unless, of course, my options were a tad limited and I felt I was being held captive somewhere in... I don’t know, maybe... an area with a reportedly high crime rate? Like a certain Hill at the end of a National Mall in DC, a particular segment of a Pennsylvania Avenue NW in said District, or perhaps even a five-sided stop off the VA-110 appropriately-named Jefferson Davis Highway in Arlington?

Yeah, the clutch disk costs $33 to manufacture, but how much did the manufacturing plant cost to build? How many staff are employed with the income from this product? How much R&D was put into creating and perfecting the part? Is this company more than likely charging more than they should? Yeah probably. Is that against the law? Nope. TransDigm had to have won a bid for this contract. If it's proven that they did so illegally, then burn em at the stake. If not, that's the fault of the government for awarding them the contract.

Wait, let me see if I got this straight. The US GOVERNMENT paid $1,443 for an item that costs $32 to produce? This sounds more like a problem with the US GOVERNMENT than a problem with TransDign. This is what happens when people in government make decisions on how to spend our tax dollars and are not beholden to a bottom line, or required to make a profit. Take me for example. I am an inner city teacher. I sometimes need my students to have a folder. If I buy them through our school approved vendor list, it costs $1 each and that is $150. BUT, if I just go and buy them myself, I can get them for $.10 each and it costs ME only $15. Who is at fault here? The company that is obviously charging too much? Or the institution willing to be so stupid that they are willing to be fleeced? The company may be acting reprehensibly, but the government is acting stupidly. It takes two to tango. I know EXACTLY how this stuff occurs. Its some mid-level person working in government. They have a budget and they have to spend it. They want to go home and see their kids. Of course they could shop around and get the best deal, but they have to spend that budget anyways, and the longer they spend looking the less time they have with their family. They just want to go home. Plus, its not THEIR money they are spending. AND, probably in order to even have the right to buy from another source that is NOT on their approved vendor list, they would have to go to their bosses bosses boss and tell them how stupid they are for having an “approved vendors list” in the first place. I can already tell you how that is going to work out. This is not just a tale of a reprehensible company, this is a tale of the inherent problem with big governemnt.

“A free market REQUIRES a large number of competitors.” I agree. When one company holds a monopoly over an item, they can price gouge. When there are only a couple of competitors, they can “colude” as AOC puts it. Agree, agree, agree. This is why you have to have a free market economy, WITH competition. There is an inherent problem in 1 institution controlling the means of production. She nailed it by making a great arguement FOR capitalism and free markets. Not a great day for economic socialism though.

perhaps this is a good demonstration of why it would be a bad idea to employ government run single-payer. The government also is a monopoly, although a different kind. but if the government is incompetent enough to pay 4,000 percent more than cost, why would we want them to take control of heath care. I do applaud AOC for exposing the orruption, and I hope she keeps up with it.

(Remember, to her those $1,000 bonuses to ordinary working families were "crumbs" ! ) Did she question how much research went into the development and production of those high end clothes? Does she really care, if she likes the way they fit and look. IF SHE is really interested in pricing of new and exclusive items, she should visit, and analyze why some women, many in politics, pay thousands of $$$$$$$ dollars for new, glamorous gowns, to be worn once, when many stores we ordinary people shop in stores thst sell similar dresses for much less! WHY.? Why do they go only to exclusive designers and pay $$$$$$$$$ for clothes they would look just as good in?? BECAUSE THEY FIT THEIR NEEDS! Does she know how much research went into why making those parts , that do the job better than others, cost more.???? She is becoming a single minded idiot! Sad.
