A big help for me came from Ace It Disc Golf. The tip: don’t force your arm to come into the power pocket. The centripetal force of the rotation will bring it in. This helped me keep my arm loose and allow it to whip out.

Thinking of your back shoulder as the "handle" of a whip can really help you mentally align all of these things to the hit correctly-without trying to maintain simultaneous thoughts about each separate piece. It also naturally creates the small "pause" that happens to allow the arm to launch forward into the power pocket and then to the hit.

The mental model of "throw to 10 o clock" is super helpful too. All the magic of your hips and shoulders SHOULD happen right around 10 or 11 o clock if the basket is at 12.

This is it. I did this most of the way through my last round and was super frustrated, I just stopped tracking my drives altogether toward the end and it got a little better, but the biggest thing was the rounding off and finishing the pull at around 2:00 instead of 12:00-12:30. The frustrating thing is that players will say you're griplocking it or something like that, when it has nothing to do with the grip and if you start releasing earlier while still doing this, then you've created another problem.

This was one of my ah-ha moments! I never really knew how to put it into words, but I felt like I had an early extension and creating a what felt like "loopy" backswing gave me more time to plant my front foot and also for some reason it helps my elbow go forward and outward rather than going forward and rounding at like 12 o'clock (what you talk about at 2:30). Suuuuch solid advice. It allowed me to hit lines and took off no distance. Night and day change and made me fall in love with the game again.

I think the brace needs to be talked about in conjunction with this because that's how you stop the rotation and create the hit. Closed shoulders plus the closed hips is where the hit comes from
@justthefacts49652 жыл бұрын
I figured this out by realizing that at the point the disc is coming into the chest and creating an acute angle with the elbow pointing toward the target, I think about keeping my elbow pointed at the target so my shoulder-tricep-elbow section holds momentarily in the right position to make the elbow create a "hinge" around which this arc naturally happens.

Sounds like it really worked for you. Question: do you feel like you are using your tricep to actively push the disc out toward the hit...or do you feel like somehow you slow or stop the shoulders and that seems to fling the disc out to the hit?

@@chasmash KZbin keeps eating my comments. Neither. Power comes from using your weight and momentum in tandem with your brace to spin your body around and turbo piss fling your arm and thus the disc out. You do not stop anything but your momentum from your walk up. Relax and swing through.

I needed this video much sooner than now, better late than never 😉 This is definitely something I do as I thought the “whip” from turning would just crack the disc out on the intended line… from what you’re describing as the disc rips out of the hand the shoulders should be closed and a line from rear to front should be aiming at the target line…? Any thoughts on a drill to work on this (Windwaker maybe, focusing on keeping shoulder from opening)? Maybe something using bands/ProPull to have a cue as to where body position should be at disc “release”

I have a question about the hand position on the backhand. Specifically where do we grip the disc: 3 o'clock? 2 o'clock? I've talked to a lot of power throwers, the guys that are 550+ arms, and i've also watched the pros with a lot of power throw.... ezra and drew come to mind. The thing that i've heard people i've talked to say is that they CANNOT hold their arm in the pocket, the rotation literally pulls their arm and the disc straight and into the "hit". When i watch ezra slow motion, it looks like that is happening there too... but he is releasing, along with a lot of other pros, with his chest/shoulders/belt buckle almost fully forward toward the target. Not extending out away again like you show here. If i try to emulate this, its an absolute shank... what are they doing there that seems to really create the maximum whip?

Gotta say this one confuses me. I understand the out-in-out idea behind the swing path, but I don't understand if you're realistically supposed to keep the throwing arm fairly loose and use the hips/off arm to rotate the body, how do you achieve this "hit" out away from the body? I know that for more advanced players, you do want to eventually incorporate the throwing arm actively swinging towards the end of the throw. Is this where we're supposed to achieve the hit?

There are a couple of guys who get super deep into the pocket; GG and Gannon come to mind. It’s obviously a good thing but all of the why’s, when’s, and how’s I don’t fully grasp yet. The arm angle does NOT stay 90° in long throwers. A much more acute angle is imperative if you care to throw distance.

Josh the "wave" in this walk-up is different from your past walkup instruction videos (where you hold the disc vertically on your left side with two hands). He does more than just help beginners-not that there’s anything wrong with that-because of his ability to re-articulate what’s been so inaccurately described in the past by others. He’s also a resource for other coaches who are contributing to the growth of the game by working with new players in their community. As a former NCAA volleyball coach and a competitive ultimate player for 20+ years, I get value from OT’s content. I look forward to seeing what you’ll one day bring to the DG instruction game

Thanks so much for this video! This is definitely something I do incorrectly, but it seems like doing it correctly would decrease power (not disagreeing with you at all -- just saying for me, right now, with my current form and all its warts). Do you have any drills you can recommend to work on getting down the "feel" of this, either from yourself or Seabas, Ace It, etc? It would be great to have that kind of stuff included along with videos like this one, where the gist is then something like: "Here's something many do incorrectly, here's how it should look, and *here's how to teach your body what that feels like*". Keep up the great content! Edit: I'm a goofball -- the Windwaker Drill was made for exactly this! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2emiaton9SUq5Y
