Another lovely walk, it's a great area to explore. I had to read Mansfield Park for A-level. If boredom was a book, then that was it. I used to keep it by my bed. If ever I couldn't sleep, half a page of Mansfield Park would have me spark out 😴 Part of the problem is having to dissect every detail of these books and then write essays about them. Spoils it all 🤦‍♂️

Buffalo! That’s exciting We also did P&P in school, I wouldn’t have got far on my own but discussing it as a class and watching the adaptations sort of brings you into a club surrounding these characters. I vividly remember reading Mice and Men for GCSE, we finished the book in class, with someone reading the end aloud, and I think we all felt the weight of it. That same teacher also gave some of us a copy of God of Small Things and at 14 I was probably a bit too young but it was like nothing else I’d ever read, it was incredible

I wrote an slightly saucy essay on LotF for my GSCE and I thought I would fail/get bollocked but I got an A. I was shocked and also smug. We had to study Lord of the Flies and we hated it, it was the most tedious thing we'd ever read, it was so hard to get through. My mum ended up reading it for me and my sister and doing the homework for us... I understand it's relevance now but I've not read it again as an adult, so don't know if I'd still find it tedious.

Love this walk!! I’m happy to see as I also turn into a beetroot the moment I attempt exercise. Also, I’m starting to understand the tension between and I vaguely remember reading Hamlet my senior year of high school, but there was a focus on writers of color, like Zora Neale Hurston and Maya Angelou, and books about the Vietnam War like The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. Although, those may have just stuck in my mind because they all had some very sad and upsetting parts, which my memory still offers up at random moments to bum me out.

Some of those books sound depressing. I studied English for my degree. All it did was put me off reading books, and suck all the enjoyment out of reading them. I quite enjoyed Hamlet at school. Once I manage to understand it, Shakespeare is quite good.

We spent a lot of time on Hamlet, and I came to some understanding of it. But Shakespeare makes me feel kinda dumb, and lately all I want to read is horror and weird fiction. I get most of my book recommendations from the podcasts The Monster She Wrote and Books in the Freezer.

Way back in the mists of time, well 1989, Wuthering Heights was the main book for my GCSE English lessons and considering at the time I was heavily reading Shaun Hutson / James Herbert horror books I ended up quite liking it and I still occasionally re-read it. As for pigeons, there are loads by me, however there are a number of hawks and the like flying about as well which is helping keeping the numbers down.

GCSE -Of Mice and Men (still hate it and I am your age), war poets and we must have done something else but no idea. A-Level - Sylvia Plath (hate that more than Mice and Men), Great Expectations, King Lear (liked that one), Measure for Measure, Jumpers (Tom Stoppard) and Brideshead. Degree - Heart of Darkness, Middlemarch (I was not doing a Literature degree but we still had these on a reading list for Communications Media).

There's a better Jane Austen film called "Miss Austen Regrets" with Olivia Williams. Ade Edmondson plays one of her brothers & Phyllida Law is exceptional as her mum. We read a Shakepeare a year at school - R & J, Macbeth, Hamlet...the usual. And also a John Steinbeck. Of Mice & Men, Grapes of Wrath. GCSE books: Macbeth (I still don't understand why Shakey is so revered), My Family and Other Animals (seem to remember I enjoyed it), A High Wind in Jamaica (no recollections of it at all, but probably hugely racist if reread today) and we had to choose a book ourselves and I chose Catch-22 (detest it even after three more rereads throughout my life, but LOVE the 1970 film - best cast ever.) For a rain jacket my two Helly Hansen jackets have never let me down, even in the tropical thunderstorms we get here. Downside is the price.

We studied Of Mice and Men, The Handmaid's Tale, and Talking in Whispers. We also did a fair few plays like The Crucible, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet. I only did GCSE English though, so maybe in my area they save Austen for A-Level. I'm quite glad though, as I've read a lot of Austen and liked it, and I generally found being made to analyse books in school ruined the enjoyment of them. Do you think there could be something you could spray your coat with to make it more waterproof to save you having to fork out for a more expensive one just for occasional downpours? I don't have any helpful suggestions, but something buried deep in my mind-palace is telling me such a product exists.
@cdwc

They sound like quite good choices for English books. As for the waterproof jackets, I think there is a recoating spray you can get. I went back to my lime green one for my Boudicca Way walk and found out it is a magnet for flies. I’ve just bitten the bullet and got a really expensive one on sale. Now I feel sick.
