Denys Cowan’s art on Hardware is amazing looking. I remember these books when they were coming out. I worked at Waldenbooks at the time, and I was the one tasked with putting the comics out on the spinner rack. I really enjoyed the art and writing in these books, and I tried to get some of the Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld obsessed kids to give these a shot. I think I made a few converts. My contention was that the art was great, and that the writing was superior to anything Image was producing at the time.

It really is the well-executed version of the mainstream edgy '90s stuff that nearly killed the industry.

I don't remember ever watching Static Shock as a kid, but when they introduced Static, Icon, and Rocket in Young Justice, I was instantly intrigued by the characters and wanted to learn more! Glad they have this compendium now and will definitely pick it up if I can👌🏻 great overview, BJ!!

I’m so glad they’ve kept the original coloring in the book too! The books had such a distinctive color palette, and you’d really lose something with new digital coloring.

The art work looks so much better on that paper, the rich colouring Milestone used can finally be appreciated. Looking forward to getting this book and future compendiums in the collection. I'm excited to read Xombi as I've never read those before.

My copy is arriving on Friday and I cannot wait! I was only familiar with Static because of the tv show. I never knew there was an entire universe. I’m looking forward to reading about these characters and this universe. Thank you for this video!

Static was my favorite superhero as a kid, but I only knew the character from the cartoon. When I grew up and could afford to collect comics, I was amazed to learn the history of Milestone and all the different people who had been involved. A highlight for me is Maddie Blaustein, her life is worth researching to any fans of '90s comics or pop culture. Been trying to piece together a complete collection for like 5 years, the only complete run I have are the four issues of Deathwish. I've been buying all the new Milestone stuff as it comes out so you know I preordered this tome the day it was announced. I wonder why the cover changed from previews though. Here's hoping there's a big resurgence in interest so we can get a nicer edition with a foreword, new interviews, maybe the original letters pages?? It's all worth preserving in the nicest format possible. Anyway, thanks for covering this release and spreading the word.

Not utilizing the Milestone characters was one of the dumbest things DC did. Glad it’s getting more attention. (I personally wish they incorporated it into the mainstream DCU. Imagine Icon on the Justice League arguing politics with Green Arrow).

Thanks for the overview. Probably the best person to tackle this video, and it turned out great. I'm pretty intrigued that they decided to go this compilation route collecting all the titles together. Maybe this is a great way to get more people to read the lesser known titles, even like Xombi and especially later on some of the miniseries. But still feel like most would probably have preferred separate dedicated collections for each book. Pretty puzzling. Especially how they're trying to group together "arcs," so you have all the way through Xombi #10 here, which is WAY past the furthest included issues of the four original titles. I'd have to read the issues again to determine if that really made sense. I'd also just recently *finally* completed my complete set of the original line after finding a slightly reasonable price for Wise Son. I'd originally started collecting the line with the idea of possibly custom binding it all eventually. For all the above reasons, I was wary about getting this compendium. But I just impulse bought one the other day anyway. Will be interesting to try reading it in this order. Also happy to try and support for future volumes. I wish they could have stuffed way more extras into this, but maybe they'll spread certain things out over the volumes. I'd love to see parts of the original "Bible" in print. There was a promo ashcan for Shadow War. I'd have to pull mine out to see if it actually had any unique content or if it was just process and marketing. Either way, could have been nice to see it represented in some way. Side note, we need to catch up on Dynamite stuff anyway. All on my bad. Been an insane couple years haha.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here. Xombi was definitely out of place if their goal was just to collect the first year of titles. They have hi-res scans of the original Bible (well, excerpts) on the official Milestone website. I'd LOVE to see those hit print. I'm hoping for individual series hardcovers, but I won't hold my breath. I'm buying two copies of each compendium with the goal of taking them apart and doing custom binds for each series once these collections wrap.

@@comicsaredope Another video points out how I guess Xombi #1 is before #0 in these? Would have been interesting to at least get a forward with some explanation on the reading order. Very interesting comment on the second copies you're getting. I'd have to overanalyze the book when I get mine. Depending on exactly how the page breaks are between titles. I've been working toward binding the originals, as I noted. But you do bring up paper condition on the singles in your vid, plus other things. And *maybe* if binding compendiums works well, I could "spare" the singles from their fate haha. I've been getting all the issues of the new runs on subscriptions. Just the standard covers, I had to contain my spending a bit and avoid the variants. Back of my mind about maybe binding those someday, but now I'm tempted to just grab the official hardcovers. Probably gonna wait to see an overview of the first one from you before making that impulse buy ;)

@@fausty616 that other guy is my homie, pretty sure that overview got that fact wrong. Xombi #0 was part of the Shadow War crossover. Issue #1 didn't come out until months later. I started off trying to collect every Milestone Returns cover. At this point, I'm only buying cover A's. Except Static. Nik Draper Ivey is killing those variant covers IMO.

I'm nearing the end of this volume now and I'm loving it! Xombi is absolutely bizarre, but I'm into it. Favorites are probably Hardware or Icon, but there aren't any I dislike. I think the issues written by Dwayne McDuffie stand out from the rest, but it's all good.

Just picked this up from Ultimate Comics off Capital. I actually had the originals but left them in Florida with my ex when I transfered. This book is heavy and a dream come true. Can't wait for Volume 2 and 3. I hope the Milestone Animated film is just as hard hitting in tone as these comics

I was a big fan of all the Dakota city comics as a kid. It’s amazing people don’t know much outside of static. Rather than black wash mainstream characters, tap into this universe. These big companies really don’t give a duck about real diverse comics.

Typical glued paperback compendium. I’d compare it to the Spawn and Invincible compendiums by Image. Too soon to tell how the glue will hold up over time, but so far so good.
