Overview of how to build a floating cat shelf

This video is a look at my floating cat shelves that I made. I might do a second video of the details of building these shelves. This video came out a little longer than I intended, but my cats kept jumping in the picture to give them some screen time.

Nice shelves Anthony... You also have beautiful cats! With regard to using oak as your material for the upper cleats, I would think that would be unnecessary. Your most likely failure point would always be where the cleats themselves were mounted to the wall as that connection would fail well before any critical cleaving across the wood itself. Great design! And wise to overbuild, cats aren’t static weight. Anything moving multiplies the load on whatever. I need these in my living room.

There are many ways to make floating shelves, and this is just one without buying silly (but working, expensive ones(which you get no joy from fitting n building yourself)) good work Anthony...

Love the extra slats you added to the cleat(?). I'll be doing that myself now, mine have a little give to them. And it's easy enough to swap out the original cleat(?)! Thanks for the great idea!!

I'm trying to do something like that for my cats and I really loved you work! The shelves look strong and strudy, yet they blend in really nicely with the rest of the decor. I hope you get to finish the pathway to the cat tree. Most importantly, though, is that the cats seem to love it. Oh, yeah, gorgeous kitties, btw!

great idea for very small apts. Cats, needing more exercise then small places are able to provide, will instinctivly climb to higher places, and stay healthier.

Built 3 for $60, w/mods. Bigger platform (12" x 24") to make comfortable for cat sleep. Mounted backbrace to interior wall studs, 16" center-to-center, w/3" lag bolts (approx 1/4" dia) & 1.25" washers. Lag bolts tightened w/socket wrench. Used 2 (not 4) outboard posts, mounted to backbrace w/lag bolts, inset 8" from either side. Bolts+washers inset 3/16" using 1.25" wood drill bit; avoids bolts denting wall. Rest of design, same. Very strong! Don't need glue or deck screws. Stapled carpet.

Very smart solution! I have wondered if there might be a way to make things more interesting for my cats in our living room. I've toyed with the idea of building runways for them up and down all four walls, but have been concerned about what that would do to the looks of the place. What you have built in your home looks really great and could no doubt be adapted to our needs. And what beautiful cats you have as employers!

Thanks for the great video and tip on how to make the wall mount. I do not want to use 'L' brackets for shelf supports and this looks pretty easy to draw up a blueprint for. Remember, measure twice, cut once!!!
