Making A Cat Playground - Part 2

I have made more of our cat playground. The first new part I made was a hexagon that is wider so there's more interior space for the cats to lounge. Also, a big part of this build was cutting the rabbets and dadoes on the CNC machine instead of on the table saw and the radial arm saw.
The second part to this project was making two square frames that are 7 inches deep and have holes cut in the sides to allow the cats to get into them. They hang on the French cleat system. These give a place for the cats to hang out above and watch what's going on in the craft room. I also made some walkways for the cats to get between the various parts of the cat climbing wall. They also hang on the French cleats. The cats seem to enjoy it and have been climbing and lounging around on their own.

One nice thing about them being removable (rather than permanently attached to the wall) is it makes it easier to clean them. Very nice design!

We have a "cat highway" that runs all around our living room, dining room, and kitchen. They love to use it to run, nap, and take shelter from scary new humans. I read a cat book a while back that talked about having multiple paths to the same places so there wasn't a traffic jam anywhere, allowing them all to get where they need without any fighting or fear. I mean, let's face it, if you are a cat person you already know that we live our lives basically to make the cats lives as good as possible. My needs come 2nd to theirs. 😻

I know it doesn't quite suit the aesthetic, but I built something similar for a client many years ago. I included a "rope bridge “in the form of a scrap of carpet spanning about 4 ft between two solid platforms. We made a couple variations of these, some that were between different level tiers. These were very easily the most popular attraction to the cats themselves, the way that the weight shifts when a second cat steps on it seems to excite them quite a bit. They make the edges of the carpet ragged as hell, but we doubled it over so the open seam was at the back. The cats seem to enjoy these Bridges on the underside even more than the top!

Reinforce the use of the Playground with kitty treats. During kitty treat time, place a few treats out in various places on the playground. Of course how you keep one cat from hogging all the treats is something you'll have to figure out. On our cat tree each cat (we have 3) has found their own level and that's where they go for their treats. This makes the playground a positive place.

Those are very cool. It seems that there is a premise behind it that cats are delicate and need everything make easy to use. I would have thought that cats are super robust critters that thrive with challengs. Perhaps over time you might put spaces between some of the hexagons so they can jump and clime a bit more like they would if they were outdoor cats to let them experience life a bit more naturally, afterall a healthy cat can easily jump down from an 8ft to a floor and be perfectly alright (not that I am suggesting 8ft spaces).
