I really learned a lot watching your video. I'm planning on adding a septic system to my undeveloped land.I really liked that you showed several different septic types and why. However, as a trained, educated, experienced horticulturist, I must correct you on two things that are not good for plants. First, reclaimed water can contain toxic chemicals not good for the health of plants and unregulated amounts of salts, that can also cause damage or death in plants. Second, watering at night can also create more problems, morning watering is best for plants. Kinda like giving a runner water before the race. Food for thought.

I would recommend a small diameter pipe with a macerator pump. This will result in a higher pressure at the outlet and much more entertaining results!

Start with 4", and taper down to 1.5" at the exit. That way it gets good velocity and will splash on everything, maybe even cause stinky erosion.

Why not divert bathroom and kitchen water to plants, cutting down on overflow to septic tank? Most houses in India do that. Helps to grow plants trees etc

I never understood why the number of rooms or size of house has anything to do with the size and design of systems, you could have 10 people in a 1200 sf house of 4 people in a 4000 sf house ? Who uses more water

Correction: Holes in soak-away pipes should always be in the upper sides ( about ten to two.) so that the pipes remain wet and stuff in the effluent doesn't have anything to gain a "foothold" to cause blockages. Just sayin'.

First time home owner. Haven't had my house a year. It has a septic tank and my neighbor said the 15 years the house has been there he doesnt think it's been cleaned out. So I called and had the tank cleaned out. I would say within a week or maybe 2 the tank was full again. It's a 1000 or 1500 tank. I dont know much about septic tanks, I am doing my research. Does that mean the leach lines are clogged? Or is the water supposed to fill up and the sludge and solids just sink to the bottom? Lately I have smelled septic outside lately around the house but nothing inside. Any knowledge and expertise is appreciated. Also, I have started using rid-x idk if that's helping me in any way or not. Thanks guys

TNVolFisher , The septic tank of course has to be full . The reason for the smell is most likely the septic has stopped working after the pump-out. All the little gremlins and bacteria were also pumped out therefore your system has stopped working. To re start the process you need to add some thing rotting, a dead rabbit will do or you can pay for some septic starter chemicals. I would just throw in a dead rabbit, chook-, cat, dog or some road kill.

i know this is an old post but have you checked with your county? They usually have a low interest loan option provided through non-profits and stuff that can help you pay for a new system professionally installed. If you do it yourself and don't get permits you may run into serious issues if you ever try to sell the place.

Tahira Vaziri It depends upon how close your septic line is from the nearest municipal sewer line. The city water and sewer usually charge about $1,000 per foot to engineer your switch from septic to sewer. In my case, I am 60 feet from the public sewer line. $60,000 to connect and then a monthly fee to remain connected. When I consider that a brand new septic system would cost me no more than $12,000, I would be stupid to connect to the public sewer. Also, consider that an on-site gravity septic system will continue to work in the event of long-term power outages. Public sewers rely on electric pumps to move sewage. In a power outage, it won't be long before your toilets, sinks and tubs will begin backing up.

I am in the same boat, Mr. Paul. half the house goes out to a sewer, the other half goes to a septic tank. Old house, I don't think the sewer system was in the area when it was originally built, then maybe they expanded the house.

@@br33zy771 The reason there are so many options is due to the fact that not everyone has the same quality/amount of soil on their properties, some folks have nothing but dust and boulders. Gravity fed drain fields don't work there.
