I have the MPAS 2.0 antenna system and it works like a charm. I use it with a Xiegu G90 and the internal tuner do the job when the antenna needs tuning. If the radio have an internal tuner you don't need to carry an extra piece. I am very happy with the quality and multiple antenna configurations of the MPAS. 73, W4RMZ.

I'm looking forward to your experiment that will determine the turns ratio of your Chameleon MPAS 2.0. I'm predicting the impedance matching network is 5:1, based on your video presentation of the visit to their factory, and the information associated with the CHA HYBRID. Great review of another product from an American company. Thank you, Dave.

I have the MPAS 2.0 with CAP HAT, the CAP HAT makes it more broadband, I have made great DX SSB contacts with it from Ireland to North, Central, South America as far as Chile to Australia and 100 Watts and FT-891 on 20m in the Summer evenings UTC as I can't really use it during the day when at work. Will try use it more on 40m over the next couple of weeks. What struck me was how well it hears and how quiet it is, the MPAS makes a great SWL receiving antenna too. I was even more surprised I could make contacts from Ireland to the UK on 80M on a 17 foot antenna! I got the extra radial kit and SWR jumped from 1.8 -2.8 but as a relatively new ham since Summer 2019 I'm still learning about SWR , Antennas etc but I learned that if by adding radials changes SWR then this is a good indicator that ground losses are being reduced and the extra radials are working and sure enough on 40m especially I noticed a difference even if power is being lost in the coax it's getting out better whatever is actually getting to the antenna which makes me think adding a remote tuner might be a good idea ? I tried raising the antenna but then I learned it didn't work any better because my radials were not tuned, for raised verticals the radials need to be tuned and this is not easy to do to support radials in the air and with ground mounted verticals it doesn't matter the length but the general consensus seems to be that more = better, if you can't make them long add more. I got the mpas 2.0 for portable ops but it worked so well that it's setup permanently on the front lawn all year around and I have it ran to the 891 in the sitting room so I can use it there from the comfort of my Armchair, the 891 of course has a great receiver with really low noise floor compared to my 7300, I just love the sound of the 891. If set up permanently out doors noalox is essential on the aluminium joints and where the UNUN connects to the spike. I did this last winter and it was still as good as new but forgot where the spike connects to the UNUN and it seized good, took a lot of work to get them separated again :-) so the noalox does work! Anyway The MPAS might be expensive but it sure is a great performer and a bit of a waste just for portable ops so like me you might get your monies worth by installing it in a permanent setup to a 2nd radio somewhere else in the house. If running digi modes, 50 W max with the Hybrid Micro, I think if you get the MINI it can take more power. I have used it on digi modes too.

Excellent information. I have the MPAS and like it as well. I added a CAP-HAT and even purchased a second MIL-EXT for future use. Chameleon suggested that two MIL-EXT's w/a CAP-HAT should have a lower SWR than using the whip. (*** Chameleon did STRONGLY recommend not using all three. ***) I recently purchased a DX Commander Classic to improve DX QSO's. From this point out, I plan on making any additional antennas that I may need or just for experimentation. Best Regards. 73.

Hi Tony, well, after a lot of research and a lot of reviews and info from owners I decided to purchase the Hustler 6BTV from DX Engineering to get better performance on 40 and 80m and to make a more permanent installation and it will handle the power from the Acom 1000. I don't get much time to make my own antennas due to work and having small Kids, but we should have fun putting the 6BTV together and tuning it. I got the Tilt plate, radial plate and the bio-degradable radial clips. I also got 2 sets of 20 radials 20 feet long to give me 60 radials. I got the matching network because I read that a good ground will give me around 30 Ohms so the matching network will bring this back up close to 50 again. Expensive but I read a lot to know that the 6BTV is a good antenna, I also expect customs to hit me when it arrives in Ireland but I can't get much ham gear on this little Island anyway so even getting from Europe is expensive. Ordering from the U.K is now a lot more expensive so I don't bother.

Hi Dev. At 11.30-1145....you mentioned that the direction of propagation must be in the opposite direction to that of the arrow was pointing. That's possible if the far end of the wire radiator is tied to a metal mast (of course) by some insulating rope. If it's tied up to a non metallic pole or the branch of a tree you won't be surprised to see it working omnidirectional, ie, without any directional preponderance. Thanks for the presentation of the antenna. The bag is made of rexin and not canvases. The BalUn must be a ferrite (cylinders/sleeves) loaded 4:1 or 5:1 auto transformer. It would work for the vertical configuration as well as the OCF dipole in horizontal or inverted V configuration. De VU2RZA 👍

Bit of trivia re antenna component you characterized as a "stinger": it appears that Chameleon has virtually cloned (well almost) the military Vietnam-era AS-271 "man-pack" 30-75MHz antenna. Notable about their wire elements: Chameleon has custom Kevlar reinforced wire. Dave: you mentioned the pack reminding you of your days in the military. I offer you a Welcome Home, Brother!

will the internal tuner on the FT-991A suffice for this antenna system? Thanks!
@mattghoward2 жыл бұрын
Anyone that buys this antenna system - I highly recommend reading the manual - gems included are - the end from which you unfold and fold up the elements is important to prolonging the life of the internal cord/spring system, the plastic bits on the poles is actually heat shrink for permanent installations, the larger pole should have nylox put on the joints to ensure good connections and prevent corrosion, you can use the whip without the extension etc. It looks like a simple system but there are lots of things to try and test and that's why its a great all in one bag pre-built. Of course you could build it all yourself from scratch for much less than this costs if you have the will, motivation and skill.

David, thank you so very much for reviewing this antenna. I am considering buying it because it seems like a good portable antenna. I don't have any trees in my yard so I was looking for something that I could setup and take down. Do you think this would work with a mountain topper? Thank you again David.

This is a high quality and well documented antenna package. Keep in mind, in most of its applications, it is good for short and medium range QSO's. (READ THE MANUAL) Do not buy this if you are primarily looking for DX

I set up the antenna in vertical configuration on a great 20m propagation weekend, I was able to make a QSO from NW Oregon to S. Brazil! I think there were a lot of things in my favor that day to make that one work.

For the price, bulk, weight, why would anyone choose this antenna over say a WRC? This requires a tuner, WRC doesn't. Also WRC can use a whip or wire. Not intending to put this antenna dow, legitimately asking why someone would choose this antenna over a much cheaper yet versatile option.
