When Grizzly still had their firearms and reloading department (Bald Eagle), they sold a pretty solid front rest. They even had their own brand of front bags. I happen to own one of the heavy “Slingshot” rests, and have the matching bags. You can still find the Bald Eagle rests occasionally online. Bought mine used for a song and love every moment I shoot off it and a Protektor rear bag.

This is by far the best video on the Sinclair front rest I've ever seen! I have been thinking about getting one but am also interested in several others that run $1,200.00, $1,400.00, $1,800.00, and $2,200.00 so Sinclair seems like a great buy. Enjoyed your thoughts on the Sinclair, thanks gavintoobe!

With that lathe and mill and if it were me I'd now do a whole lot of research online for what's currently out there for different designs and options including the custom built one's used in bench rest and take the best ideas from all of them that will suit your own personal requirements and then just build my own front rest. I also wouldn't rule out making my own wooden patterns and having cast iron castings poured either. Cast iron is well known for it's vibration dampening in machine tools so it's a natural for a front rests main component parts. I've had a Wichita front rest with an add on windage adjustable Sinclair top on it for over 20 years and it works just as well as your $600 one. Unfortunately mine was bought prior to them later offering it in cast iron which I'd much prefer over the cast aluminum mine is. I have re-made a few parts on it out of stainless to help increase it's overall weight. Squeezing the rear bags ears against the rifle stock very likely introduces minor errors in obtaining the exact same rifle reaction for each shot since humans are mostly incapable of doing exact repetitive movements. That could be a partial reason for your vertical stringing. With my 6 mm ppc and shooting with a proper front rest and sand bags off a good bench I found shooting it in a free recoil mode gave the best consistency. My shoulder is a couple of inches from the butt stock and nothing but my trigger finger touches the rifle until it fires and moves back. By that time the bullet is long gone. With any harder recoiling rifles I just use a small square sand bag standing vertical against my shoulder to increase the mass and spread out any heavier recoil loads over a larger area of my shoulder.

Nice work again Gavin👍 I appreciate the “value minded” approach to all your videos. It’s would be too easy to only feature the high-end (cost) products and tease 99% of your viewers that are beyond our reach or interest. Instead, you do the heavy-lifting and analyze a variety of products, both cheap and expensive, to find products which perform at high levels, but are reasonably priced. Keep those videos going. You do a big service to the entire range of shooters out there👍👍

I think I am going to order one after this and looking at other reviews. They are even more expensive here in Australia but after buying two other Caldwell rests which were just rubbish and seeing the problems other people are having with the Bald Eagle series then there is little choice I feel. At least it will last a lifetime. Good equipment always does.

Gavin great content as usual, thank you. Here is my ongoing issue and I'd like to know your thoughts... I have tried many different benchrests for precision shooting and despite all of the advances in microfine tuning the windage, elevation, level and base stability, the weakest link is always the movement in the front bag. Comparatively speaking, so much detail and precision goes into 99% of the shooting rest yet the front padded bags and V holders allow for so much unwanted gross movement which translates to 90% of the space in the groupings. How can we fine tune this part of the rests as well?

I recently bought this rest in "general purpose" configuration. It comes with an Edgewood bag. However, I would like to add a benchrest top. If so, I will have to buy a bag for it. You mention that the bag size is 2 1/4 x 5 1/2. However, pretty much all the bags I find from my usual vendors are 5 3/4 or bigger. Where are you finding a bag of this size?

I have the original Sinclair front rest. I am glad Sinclair went back to the original style rest. It is a great front rest. Not as convenient as a Farley, but a lot cheaper. For the rear bag, I do not like the rabbit ear bag. Get a bunny ear bag and fill it with ground cubic zirconia (aka, heavy sand).

Gavin, great review but have a question regarding the spike feet on this rest, how does it work on the concrete bench? Does it need rubber feet to keep from marring the bench. Seems like you’d need them? What is your thoughts. Second question, do you have the product numbers for the different front bags that you have to order separately? I called Sinclair and she didn’t know and asked for me to call back 😢 14:18

This is a great rest from a good company without a doubt. Type of rest I'm looking for is something that I can strap my rifles into like a one piece sled and completely immobilize it. Elevation adjustments would be a must. Windage would a nicety, but not absolutely. Something that could be used to do rifle iron site and telescope calibration, as well as maintenance and even scope and site fitting and leveling also what I need. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. Made in the USA and solid would be nice too. Made in China sport is not on my menu anymore.

#1 for small groups, learn to shoot free recoil. #2 for that rest and so it doesn't mar up the top of your new bench with the pointed leveling screws cut a piece of 3/4" plywood in a triangular pattern a few inches wider than the rest foot plate/footprint and counter sink 3 holes to match the rest level screws on the bottom of the wood triangle install some peel and stick rubber diamond plate from harbor freight for the bottom of the plywood and set the rest on top of the plywood to keep it from sliding around and your in like flynn. for shooting on the ground like real shooters do, benches are for fat old men with big bellies and bad backs or necks and BR shooters or winter. order a set of 3" or bigger feet to screw on the leveling screws so they don't sink to far in the dirt. i have had one of these rests for a few years now for F class shoots and i like it real well. the only thing better is a SEB but they are very pricey.

PRS? No one in PRS/NRL would use that. People have been shooting sub-moa groups using a bipod/frontbag and sock + fill for years, and taking home trophies... This is demonstrated in recent top shooters in PRS/NRL - most use minimal prep and lack fancy equipment. Gavin, I enjoy your videos but your gear reviews lately have been tailored to those with unlimited money...

This is NOT for PRS :) This is for testing and evaluation. If you’re looking for a budget content I have a lot of that, look up my budget shooting and reloading playlist!

@@Ultimatereloader I think my comment came off wrong. My apologies! Having shot competitively for many, many years, I've come to realize that there is certainly a threshold where MORE gear doesn't obtain guaranteed podium standings. My evaluation of my loads shouldn't require $xxx to get on paper. I would day 99% of people can evaluate their shortcomings in their reloading or load development with a simple bag rest and a chronograph. At the end of the day, I enjoy shooting more... Not spending money. Again, I enjoy the videos, they are beneficial to the reloading community. Heck, you're a big reason I splurged on an Autotrickler (based on your review). 👍
